When was America great?

And for who was it great for?

50's and before - even white women didn't have full rights

60's - minorities didn't have full rights

70's - women and minorities still fighting for full rights and inclusion

80's? 90's? (Those were not really "great" decades lol)

I'm really curious, what does it mean to "make America great again"

"Again" is the real word I have issue with in this phrase, without it the phrase would be perfectly fine in my eyes.

So trump supporters when was america great and who was it great for?

reply

Simple it’s a reference to a time when the American dream was obtainable for more people. Due to more jobs created by higher economic growth, lower taxes, and people having the ability to take care of themselves and live the dream.

Your historical references can be applied to the entire world, not just the United States.

There’s a reason why the whole world has fought and died to move to the United States and take advantage of our opportunities. There has never been a country in the history of the world that has created more wealth for more people than the United States.

Making it great “again” means taking the country out of the hands of the career politicians who only serve to enrich and empower themselves. Who hold power to acquire more wealth and more power for themselves and their political party. And it means replacing the people who manufacture public perception in the education industry, and media, who hate the United States and wish to destroy it. Via chaos. Violence. Open borders. A weak economy etc... All things the left and demokkkrat media/party openly encourages.

Skimmed your wall of a post.

Seems like vague rhetoric that didn't answer the clearly defined question.

I'm glad to see you post without "lemming" or "hatred". So that's a win👍👍🤗

reply

"Skimmed your wall of a post."
Wow, you seem like quite a douche! You ask a question, someone took the time to reply...a total of 8 sentences there, and that's the way you respond to it?
Jeesh, who do you think you are, you know?
Wow!

reply

Thanks for bumping my thread back to the top super chief!

I know GD's replies all too well at this point. All regurgitated rhetoric from fux news. I don't need to swim in sewage to know it's sewage.

Notice in all of that reply he never clearly answered the original question? Just a bunch of vague rhetoric that deflects.

Who do you think you are super chief?

reply

I don't know...I'm the guy that came into this thread thinking there might be a nuanced, even somewhat balanced discussion. Instead, the person starting it proved right off the bat that it'd likely be quite the opposite. Its your thread man, its kind of on you to at least pretend like other viewpoints might have worth. You asked the question...and yeah, I agree with you that it was all some canned bullshit, but that...I guess it just surprised me is all. What seemed like some immediate hostility.

You know that Reagan had the same motto, right? Make America Great Again? Yeah, its the most generic and stupid platform ever, but it makes total sense in the context of Trump's campaign.

Personally, what bothers me is the noise from each side...we're all just battling it out with seeming no attempts to hear each other. Its hard not to get involved in that...we all have something we want to say, but not many minds are being changed at this point, not with this adversarial type of discourse we've got going on.

Maybe that's what got me about your post. Just so adversarial right from the get-go, when it was obvious that you knew what you were talking about and could likely articulate a point that might be heard.

reply

Go through GDs post history and that might help you understand my quick hostility.

He's a fux news stooge with no original opinion of his own

reply

So how does Trump "make America great again" with his current tax policies that only lower taxes for the wealthy? How can people "take care of themselves" when Trump's anti-obamacare policies have throttled premiums and made healthcare unaffordable?

How can people obtain the American dream under Trump's tax policies when the benefits go to the corporations and therefore WAGES DO NOT GO UP?

What is Trump doing to take the "country out of the hands of career politicians who only serve to enrich themselves" when he's only increased the swamp with his swampy cabinet picks? And what good is it when you replace career politicians with a businessman who is only serving to enrich himself?

This is why people think trump supporters are dumb, because they claim to be for all the things you listed. Yet they support a president who does the opposite of what they claim they want. Trump's policies won't make the American dream affordable again, it will only put it even more out of reach for the average American.

reply

And you think Hilary was going to address those things? She’s never addressed them in the past. She didn’t even have a platform. She’s owned by special interests. Trump is not.

Trump paid for his own campaign. He’s a successful business man worth 3 billion dollars. Money he made running successful business that employed 1000s of people. Hilary has never successeded in anything.

He’s done 1000x more than she would’ve done. If Hilary had won, it would be more slow growth, stagnation, corruption, and blame. Her track record speaks for itself. Illegal email server in her basement. Couldn’t win the primary so she cheated. Couldn’t win the general, blames everyone but herself. She’s an uninspiring corrupt loser that the country refused. She couldn’t even bring a few thousand into her rally’s. No matter how many nonsense Demokkkrat Amazon Post stories you fall for.

They told us they didn’t wire tap. Now we know they did.

They told us they didn’t spy, now we know they did.

They told us hed kill the economy, it’s booming.

They told us he’d kill the markets. They’re at record highs.

For 20 months They’ve told us “the Russians”, despite there still being zero evidence. And all that after they spent 3 months telling us it was impossible to rig an election. They were so confident Obama told his cyber security chief to stand down against Russian meddling.

This is why we know demokkkrat lemmings like yourself are close minded mental slaves incapable of critical thinking. Incapable of independent thought. You cut and paste like a good little lemming. Someday you’ll wake up to your ignorance. Otherwise you’ll live a miserable life of obsessive hate. It’s your choice. Can’t blame the Russians.

reply

lol. Except there's a ton of evidence as laid out in the indictments. Here's a question for you.

Hypothetically speaking since you claim there is "zero evidence", if there were evidence against Trump, what would it look like to you?

It never fails that those that claim "no evidence" can never provide a coherent answer to this very straightforward question. I'll wait.

reply

eyedef, I'm getting an additional 400 dollars a month in my paycheck. My 401k is growing faster than it ever has. Its the first time in 40 years that there's more jobs than people to fill them. I guess it really sucks doesn't it.

reply

eYe think you forgot to include the part of your pitch about how you work from home and the link to where I can discover the secret sauce behind your amway gimmick.

reply

eyeDEF, I do work from home. I have since 1997. I don't know what that has to do with anything. I drove 50 miles each way to work and back for 20 years before that, before the advent of the internet. Please fit that into your equation, for whatever that's worth. And I've never done anything with Amway.

reply

Oh you were being serious? Your post sounded practically indistinguishable from marketing spam often seen in facebook or youtube comments peddling a get rich quick pyramid scheme. So I initially read it as satire with "ponzi" in your nick.

Well good for you, I'm happy for you. I actually have nothing to complain about either so you shouldn't say it sucks when it's important to appreciate what we have. Especially in light of the expanding underclass of those left behind from skyrocketing wealth inequality as a consequence of regressive tax policies. They don't enjoy the same opportunities and resources we had available to become upwardly mobile. Imagine having to start out today saddled with 200k in debt from college tuition. Or relying on Obamacare and watching premiums go through the roof due to policies from an administration intent on dismantling it. Or being assed out of a job in an industry hit in the crossfire of a senseless trade war. Savor the moment and be thankful that just by sheer luck of birth you're not one of those hapless migrant workers imprisoned and separated from your child just for daring to seek a better life to do backbreaking work in the "land of opportunity". Or one of their kids scarred for life by the PTSD of being separated from their parents by the inhumane xenophobic policies of this administration. Have gratitude and rejoice because we hit the lucky sperm lottery and shit could just be so much worse for us.

reply

I wouldn't attribute it to luck. Everyone has an excuse for their lot in life. Years ago, I had a wife that didn't work and 2 kids, and lost my job. I got 2 crappy jobs, and went to school full time, and paid for it my self. No loans. I busted my ass and did it myself. People can do it if they have the desire.

reply

Being born in the states you've already hit the lucky sperm pool jackpot. You're for personal responsibility and not making excuses? Great, I think everyone should be for those things too. But advocating for personal responsibility and making the best of your lot in life should not be an excuse to deny people equal opportunities and be indifferent to policies of intolerance, oppression, and cronyism. That's just wrong.

reply

So how does Trump "make America great again"

He doesn't. He was just a counter weight to the far left policies of the previous president. Trouble is the president only cares about himself and doesn't give 2 shits about the will of the people which is the same problem I had with the previous president.

reply

Can you cite what you mean when you refer to "far left policies" of the previous president?

Very curious about this.

reply

In terms of Obamas policies his stance on immigration reform to the point of stopping enforcement of immigration laws, his obama care shove, his constant habbit of chastising Christianity while showing a lot of empathy for Islam. His refusal to acknowledge Islamic terrorism even to the point of calling it workplace violence when it showed up in the west. Obamas repeated habit of apologizing for the US overseas.

Trump in turn then campaigned on stopping illegal immigration, stopping or redoing health care, tried to put a travel ban on Muslim countries(Yes it was based on the religious breakdown of the countries he targeted.). During the early obama presidency those policies would have been identified as far left but I guess became the norm during terms. I can't imagine any president before that that would have dared to block states from keeping illegal immigrants out of their state while the federal agents likewise did nothing. But now you hear democrats talking about abolishing ice. Trump also seems to want to bully around other nations (except russia for some reason. [rolls eyes]) and act tough in response to Obama's apology tour during his terms. IE people were just pissed off so he told them exactly what they wanted to hear and now we're all screwed.

reply

Yeah his refusal to call out radical Islamic terrorism by that label was pretty annoying I agree. He was overly sensitive about not wanting to lump the actions of a handful of extremists in with a religion practiced by 1.3 billion people but his soft peddling was counterproductive in my opinion. The bad ideas in the Q'uran and as practiced by Muslims at odds with modernity that fuel extremism need to be addressed honestly so Muslims can begin their own Reformation like Christianity underwent 500 years ago. There's a reluctance by too many on the left to speak critically of Islam, even when their ideas warrant scrutiny.

Can you cite what you mean about Obama not enforcing immigration laws? Obama was hammered on the left for being the "deporter-in-chief" because of his shift in focus to forced removals of illegals from the previous practice of voluntary returns under Bush. His other major change in border security was focusing on removal of recent border crossers and criminals instead of ordinary status violators apprehended in the US interior. The reasoning was to act as a greater deterrent to illegal border crossings and to remove illegals before they became integrated into US communities:

https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/obama-record-deportations-deporter-chief-or-not

I'm also curious how you think Obama should have addressed the crises of unaffordable healthcare? Because Obama got the idea of Obamacare from the conservative Heritage Foundation who originally dreamed it up as a private sector alternative in response to the burgeoning unaffordable healthcare crises. Mitt Romney became the standard bearer for the conservative plan by implementing it as gov of Massachusetts. But as soon as Obama adopted it in hopes to get Republicans on board it was instantly demonized by the right. No one on the left really liked Obamacare either, as it was seen as inferior to single payer healthcare and an attempt by Obama to appease Republicans who refused to go along anyway, but still better than nothing. What should he have done?

reply

"Can you cite what you mean about Obama not enforcing immigration laws? Obama was hammered on the left for being the "deporter-in-chief"

Obama sued states for handling immigration on their own or rather his state deparment did and not leaving it to federal agents to do nothing. Obama had signed an executive order that blocked deportation for people that were illegally in the country for over 5 years. The supreme court blocked the order 2 years later.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2014/11/19/your-complete-guide-to-obamas-immigration-order/?utm_term=.60033f02f1be[/url]

"I'm also curious how you think Obama should have addressed the crises of unaffordable healthcare? "
I'm pointing out that trumps election is backlash against obama. I would have liked to see more regulation in the medical field for me personally and force states to allow buying insurence across state lines. Being able to purchase insurence from any state should be a right of all citizens that would go a long way in driving down the cost of insurence as well. I don't blame obama for that I suspect special interest groups are too big of an obstacle for congress it seems. And I'm pretty convinced the left like the idea of Obama care but probably don't like it now as the affordable care act while making purchase of insurance mandatory(Or pay a tax fine) it didn't really make it affordable but this dislike of obama care wasn't like till later. At any rate all I am saying is we got stuck with the turd we have now because he was portraing himself as the polar opposite of obama. Well that and the fact that we had too many micro GOP candidates that fragmented the GOP. And I'm pretty sure Trumps threate to run 3rd party (There by splitting the conservative vote) scared other candidates into endorsing Trump as they exited the primary.

reply

He asks a question, you reply, he "skims" the reply. Why post if you don't want to read the replies? And calling it a "wall" of a post, which is hardly longer than his original post,is just the typical liberal attitude. You didn't regurgitate what he really wanted to hear, so he didn't even take the time to consider it. The OP is transparent, and personally I think he's just trolling. I know some dumb liberals, but joffrey seems more like a caricature of a liberal than anything that's based on reality.

reply

It’s typical. I have no problem sharing with uninformed demokkkrat lemmings why myself and most Republicans vote Republican. Perhaps it’ll wake them out of their close minded mental slavery.

As for why they vote demokkkrat, I don’t need to ask, I already know.

reply

When the reply is copy and paste nonsense rhetoric there is no point reading it in full. It's a waste of time.

Drumpf supporters seem like a caricatures of angry biggots willing to sell out their democracy because it's no longer completely skewed in their favour.

Drumpf supporters have no concept of reality, they live in a dream world concocted by their supreme leader. So please avoid speaking of something you know nothing about

reply

"So trump supporters when was america great and who was it great for?"

It was and is greater than every place people chose to move from to come to it.

reply

But the phrase implies that it's not great and there was a time that it was🤔

(You can't make something that is already great, great, you can only make it better)

reply

That doesn't mean America is great, just that many other places are shit.

reply

Why are those places shit? This land was shit until a particular culture showed up. And you are arguing the definition of great compared to these other places it is great in terms of living a safe fulfilling life.

reply

I hate to break the news to you, but every minority in evry country on the planet has it harder than the homogeneous population. You think white people aren't discriminated against in India? have you ever been to Japan? Literally any city you travel to outside of maybe Tokyo will have Japanese people scoffing at you and looking at you like "what are you doing here?". Try landing a job in Japan as a white person unless you have a college degree. Or how about taking a good hard look at the state of South Africa right now. White women and children literally being raped and murdered en masse and having their farms stolen from them by the government and they can't even get fucking news coverage for it.

...and then you want to bitch because minorities didn't have full rights 70 years ago? Are you fucking nuts? I have an idea, if America is such a shitty third world racist and sexist country, why dont you pack up your bags and get the fuck out? I'm sure Canada would love to take you in. They're nothing but far left leaning SJWs. They even elected the biggest moron for a politician the world has ever seen that loves to hand out taxpayers' money to terrorists and third world countries. You would fit right in.

Watch this and shut up: https://youtu.be/Kttb1lUVJcM?t=1m50s

reply

Skimmed the wall of text post, a bunch of deflection that didn't answer the clearly defined question.

The saying is "make AMERICA great again", not the rest of the world. Stop deflecting and answer the question or butt out.

reply

Your question posits that America was never great to begin with. Everything I said answers your question. Especially the video which I assume you also skimmed through. You're just lazy. You don't actually want an answer.

reply

The phrase in question posits that america was great at some point in time. I just want to know when that was and for who was it great?

I don't click links like your drumpf comrades 😋

reply

I would say it peaked from the 1940's to the 1980's. It was greater for whites during the earlier part, but then greater for everyone during the latter part.

reply

Women and minorities were still fighting for equal rights and inclusion in the 70's.

So basically as soon as women and minorities had some real rights and inclusion in the 80's that's when the peak ended? Telling

reply

Idiot. Women have never stopped fighting and bitching for what they want in their history. To this day they're still fighting for pay equity when the wage gap was refuted in the 70's. Currently they are fighting to prevent rape culture when the rape stats are lower than at any other point in history. And that's not including other ridiculous things they're "fighting for" like trying to push this 80 genders bullshit onto the rest of us. Just because you see them "fighting" for their rights, doesn't mean they don't have them. Nor does it mean their "cause" is just and worth protecting.

reply

Reported for insult like your comrade would do.

Yes what you say is correct, they are still fighting for true equity. But even up until after 1979 states like Nevada and Florida hadn't even ratified the Equal Rights Act. So basically your high point of reference for American greatness ends when women and minority rights were legally recognized 🤔

reply

They AREN'T still fighting for true equality. True equality was already achieved. They've been fighting for equal pay when they've been getting payed equally since the 60's. How many women do you see fighting for equal female representation in the oil fields for example? How many of them do you see fighting for equal representation in prisons? Or garbage collectors? Or plumbers? Why is equal representation for women in all of the dirty sectors never such a big deal for these women that, by your own word, are fighting for "true equality"? Would that not be "true equality" by definition?

reply

No, true equity has not been achieved, full stop. It definitely wasn't achieved by the start of the 80's.

I'm not going to argue with you, the stats are all there. Please help yourself to some enlightenment.

Byyyyeeeeee

It's not a matter of thinking brother, it's a matter of seeing. And you've proven that you can't see anything beyond your narrative. I even argued you of this prior to the argument. You can only see what you're willing to see. This is why people are fed up with trying to argue with liberals. You just don't know how to listen. So until you learn how to accept that sometimes you're wrong and not always right. Trump will continue to win the presidency. For shame. You guys had a good run but it's over now. Edit to add that it's amazing that no one can just give a straightforward answer as to when they think America was great and why.

reply

Holy shit, you are literally stupid if you think women were getting equal pay in the 60's.

You should watch that period piece Mad Men and come back and try to claim with a straight face women were being paid equally in the sixties when they weren't even considered for jobs above secretarial work in 1960.

reply

Oh yes. I will be sure to watch a tv drama for historical evidence to how life was like back then. Capital idea there sir!

reply

I just thought it would be better suited to you because everyone knows you trumptards don't read. Just last week you were insisting the government had provided no evidence of Russian involvement and you needed me to school you on what an indictment was.

So you can't really blame me for treating you like you're dumb. You're welcome.

reply

I'm still saying that FYI. There hasn't been a shred of evidence supporting the Russian collusion. Just saying it happened isn't going to make it any more true. Thanks though.

reply

lolz. Now you're shifting the goalposts son. Last week it was there "wasn't a shred of evidence" supporting Russian meddling. I schooled you. Now you're saying there's no evidence of collusion.

reply

How am I shifting the goalposts? Last week I said there was no evidence. This week I'm still saying there's no evidence. You couldn't school a two yearold.

reply

Is English your second language?

Or are you just too addled in the brain to know the difference between "Russian meddling" you claimed no evidence for last week and "collusion" which you're claiming no evidence for this week?

Regardless, of course you're going to say there's no evidence because you're a trumptard that doesn't read.

reply

There has literally been not a shred of evidence released confirming any of this bullshit. If its so obvious then present it to me. Show me.

reply

LOLOLOLOLOL!

I already schooled you last week AND pointed our you're not literate enough to understand it anyway because everyone knows trumptards don't read. Thanks for confirming once again that I'm right. You need to accept your lot in life by not aiming for things you can't achieve.

You also gotta cut down on the weed. It's affecting your memory and your autism is bad enough already.😂

reply

I'm still waiting on your proof. Can you please supply it? I'm begging you.

reply

Kid, it's not my proof. It's Robert Mueller's proof he's already made available to the world in the indictments he handed down two weeks ago charging 12 Russian GRU officers hacking the DNC and back in February that charged an additional 13 Russian agents for traveling here in the 2016 run up to meddle in the elections.

Federal indictments are where prosecutors layout charges and detail their evidence, and the proof has to meet a very high bar because it has to be strong enough for prosecutors to present in court to convince a jury. That's why you claiming no proof is hilarious since they've already handed down indictments, proving you don't even know what the significance of an indictment is.

Let me make things crystal clear for you. Indictment = Proof.

So again, you being too dumb to go to the Department of Justice website and download the indictments to read yourself doesn't mean there's no proof. It just proves you're a trumptard who can't figure out how to get it.

reply

Oic. Not you're proof, Robert Mueller's proof. Ok. Now that we got that straightened out, can you show me Robert Mueller's proof?

reply

I think it's important you learn how to wipe your own ass, not expect others to do it for you. 😥

reply

I agree. We are in agreement. Does that mean you can show me Robert Mueller's proof now?

reply

I already did you the favor telling you how to wipe your ass clean. Of course I'm not going to wipe your ass for you. That's gross. That stank is going to stay in your ass until you figure it out. That's even grosser. Wipe your ass kid.

reply

But I'm not asking you to wipe my ass, I'm just asking you to show me Robert Mueller's proof.

reply

And I'm telling you I have no interest in wiping your ass.

reply

But I'm not asking you to wipe my ass, I'm just asking you to show me Robert Mueller's proof.

reply

Really? It sounds like you're asking me to wipe your ass.

reply

I'm not. I'm asking you to provide Robert Mueller's evidence.

reply

Nah. That would be a waste of my time when you're a trumptard and can't read. I much prefer spending it making fun of you. 😁

reply

The fact that you call women fighting for equality "bitching" was the most telling comment about your mindset of all.

You busted yourself and it's not even a "would/wouldn't" situation.

reply

What would you call it?

reply

Easy....stop at "fighting" and change "want" to "deserve".

reply

They didn't deserve it. Did you see them rallying themselves together to have the right to get drafted? Cause I didn't. And the draft was what enabled men to vote in the first place. Why were they fighting for the rewards instead of fighting for the right to earn them? They could have easily campaigned in order to get equal access to the frontlines of war if they wanted, allowing them the right to vote. but they didn't. They kind of glossed over all of the work that was required for their voting rights and went straight to the goods. Much respect.

reply

okay.....wow. No comment needed for that. Your opinions actually explain a lot about you.

reply

This is usually what happens when someone gets schooled on history that they weren't taught in their feminist studies class. I don't blame you for running.

reply

Run from a neaderthal? Absolutely.

reply

These antiquated cromags are a major impediment to real progress. Can't wait for their ilk to be phased out in the upcoming generations 🤞

reply

Oh yes, so you enlightened folk can come up with another hundred and thirty genders to add to your list of the current 80. We need real progress like that to prevail over the primitive two that we've been using for the last hundred of 50 thousand years.

reply

See you are a bigot, how do other people's gender identities hurt you in anyway? Your intolerance is evident and that's the whole point of this thread. Thanks!! BYeeeee!

reply

"I would say it peaked from the 1940's to the 1980's... It was greater for whites..."

Not white women. Not white gays. Not whites who were poor. Not white Catholics. Not white non-Christians. Not white ethnic groups like Italians and Irish aka: not white immigrants.

Life expectancy for white men in 1940: 62. black men: 52. WW2, epidemics (smallpox, whooping cough, diphtheria...), polio, food rations, 45% had no indoor plumbing.

"...then greater for everyone during the latter part...."

Roughly 50s to early 70s were the oppressed (blacks, Hispanics, women, migrant workers, gays, etc.) fighting for their rights. Still fighting. That leaves the 80s. Reaganomics caused large cuts in Federal spending which caused local municipalities to layoff people. Poverty, AIDS, high crime, drugs. I like to add bad fashion and rock music too.

Nothing great about those time periods.

reply

So then what time period, in which country, would you consider great?

reply

One person's "great" is another person's hell. Ex. A billionaire Saudi prince with 3 wives and 10 concubines vs a concubine.

"Great" aka: utopia for all doesn't really exist (except in Star Trek OT, The Orville and Hobbiton).

Personally, I tend to like present-day Canada even though they have their issues.

reply

If canada has their issues then how can they be great? According to you, no country has ever been great. How about good? Has any country ever been good? If so, according to who?

reply

I already wrote that I don't believe great exist and it's subjective.

For me it's Canada (esp. Montreal) because of its high quality of life, low crime, speak English, food, scenic, egalitarian laws, democratic, universal health care, things to do, clean, multicultural, etc. Negatives: cold weather; treatment of indigenous people.

Generally, the best (better word?) countries are where you find the happiest people in the world: Denmark; Sweden; Norway.

Oprah in Denmark:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKa-3lbLeyA
A mother left her 1 month old twins outside in their carriage alone. No problem. Negatives: small apartments; lack of diversity; weather

reply

You think Denmark, Sweden, and Norway don't have their issues? How about their suicide rates? Obviously can't be happy when you're killing yourselves. How about their monumentally debilitating tax rates? How about their increased rape attacks, acid attacks, murders, and pedophile gangs on account of their open border immigration policies? How can countries like that be great?

reply

"How can countries like that be great?"

Why are you trying to start a debate when I have repeatedly wrote that "great" doesn't exist?

Suicide is due to the weather (lack of sunshine) which I pointed out. I doubt it would bother me too much since I prefer cloudy & cool. Their citizens don't have a problem with the taxes since they get so much in return. Crime is much higher in the U.S. How many Americans would leave their one month old babies unattended outside?

Another negative is cuisine. I'm going to need Italian, Indian and TexMex restaurants.

So then no country has ever been great then. Is that what you're saying?

Wow, this kid is really dense.

80's & 90's were fantastic. Reagan, Bush Sr, and Clinton all worked well to keep America strong and economically sound. The end of the cold war starting in the late 80's and ending in the early 90's was the icing on the cake. It was a great time to build the American Dream and so many did.

The year 2000 was okay too, heck so was 2001--until that terrible September day, then the world just went to crap. Now you can't even sneeze in an airport without someone looking at you funny. I wish that day had never happened, but there's nothing we can do about that but move on and hope nothing like it ever happens in our lifetimes again.

The 80's saw the highest unemployment rate since the great depression. It was only in the late 80's that things got good. Then the 90's were ok until the the dot com bubble started to pop, late 90's admittedly.

So basically america was "great" for ~11-12 years?? Is that what MAGA really stands for?

reply

Your problem is that you keep on looking at specific issues, and then saying that because those issues existed, that the country could not have been great as a result. So because things were not perfect across the board, that means the country was not great as a result.

Let's say we reach a point where there isn't a single rape that ever occurs in the country. Not one. And this lasts for a decade. The year after that decade, then sees one single rape occur. And your response is that there would have been a huge spike in that single year, therefore America is no longer great. That's your crackpot logic at work.

In using this method of thinking, can you name one single country on the face of the earth that was better than America? That was great? A country where everything was perfect across the board? No rape? No drug overdoses? No murders? No robberies? No unemployment? No single motherhood? No high school drop outs? no prostitution? No suicide? No workplace deaths? Is there a single country in the world, that has managed to pull that off ever in the history of the human race? If not then no country was ever great then right?

reply

Deflection.

And the only problem I have is with closet biggots trying to act like they're not biggots.

Also I can name plenty of countries better than the US. But this is the place to discuss that

I suppose it was great when the White Man came and "purged" it of that scummage called The Aboriginal Peoples...... Sorry to say but America was never great. It was always based on the principle of raping the indigenous people, subvert the land, and walk off with the spoils.

reply

Yep! So let's make it that again!!

reply

Hate to break it to ya but the aboriginals were doing that to themselves long before white people discovered them.

Actually I think 80's/half of 90's were the best. Just after the baby boom and just before the millennial edition. I mean look at the constant nostalgia that Hollywood wants to bring back from that era.

reply

That clip still doesn't define a date or time when America was great.
I also take issue with a few things he says in the clip. U.S. is STILL the strongest world economy. STILL achieves great tech advances. STILL cures diseases. STILL has great artists especially in pop culture which most of the world loves: music; movies; TV shows; books; magazines; fashion.... Immoral laws were struck down because oppressed people and their allies fought to have them changed. Liberals actually have done a great deal of winning through policy changes like gay marriage, ending Vietnam War, Civil Rights movement, Roe vs Wade, EPA laws, etc. Americans have more access to information through the internet than any previous generation.

He's idealizing a past that never existed. I think too many people have watched "Leave it to Beaver" and think it was real. The first part of the clip was good though.

What specifically do you find great about the 80s and half of the 90s? Hollywood is probably trying to attract a specific demographic through "nostalgia".

reply

Yeah, moms in the 50s certainly didn't walk around the house with high heels on like she did in Leave it to Beaver.

reply

Let alone do housework wearing them along with her pearl necklace.

She wouldn't allow poor Beaver to play with a boy because his parents were divorced. Same with a poor boy. What a mean woman!

reply

Damn I don't remember that episode. I do faintly remember a Mad Men episode where a divorced woman and her kid received that level of stigmatization by the rest of the neighborhood on discovery.

reply

June said the boy was "too mature" for Beaver. He was from a "broken home". Ward didn't seem to have a problem with it though.

I think a divorced woman was called a "used" woman.

I never watched "Mad Men". Too many good shows to view them all.

reply

True, was just saying America was never the 'greatest' when those with American exceptionalism think otherwise.

-Strongest economy with 43% in poverty.
-Great tech advances I can give you that but they give those tech away almost like cakes in some circumstances or it gets stolen/copied.
-Cure? More like create new ones to cure old ones if anything. More profitable. Always wanting to put you on the latest drug or market it up 4000%.
-Great artists? Yeah sure, the old ones. Newer ones are more or less the same and have become stale/homogenized and forced down our throats. Movies, music, tv shows have become more of the same re-hashes of generic tropes.
-Liberals have done many changes to censor people and thought that don't align to their own agendas. Not saying the right is any better but it's there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLCgmDEzSAo kek, enrichment clause.

What I find great? I was born around that time. XD

That and the music and movies back then were some of the best I mean a lot of the stuff we meme about or reference to if not reboot/remake are from the late 70's to early 90's.

reply

I mainly agree. The guy on the tape was speaking as if tech advances and the strong economy etc. were no longer happening. I was criticizing that.

Giving some tech away profits many people. Imagine if only Americans had access to the internet? Or smart phones?

I agree that doctors throw pills at people instead of telling them to exercise or eat better. They also changed the range for high blood pressure and diabetes in order for more people to be diagnosed with those illnesses.

I have to defend Game of Thrones (TV show and books); This is Us; Legion; Victoria; The Good Place; Man in the High Tower; Handmaid Tales, Stranger Things, etc. TV is having a second Golden Age. Movies & music are horrible though.

Perhaps not the era that was great, but just being a kid. People who were kids during the Depression thought that was a great time, "The Good Old Days".

Well those are like the minority. The vast majority are generic to the point one gets desensitized to it or you just feel bored watching it if not just to kill time from own said boredom.

I made a post in the past illustrating this:

reply

Most art will be mediocre. The best will always be a minority, but presently, there is an unusually high number of great TV shows. I went from watching 1-3 shows each season to easily more than a dozen now.

I don't usually watch cop, lawyer and doctor shows because they are uncreative. Ditto most family and superhero shows except for Legion and The Grinder(cancelled).

I watch foreign shows too since they're a glimpse of another culture. "Little Mosque on the Prairie", "Blackstone" (Native Canadian drama), "Rich House, Poor House (British lifestyle swap), etc.

I haven't been bored watching TV shows in years. Movies and music are a different story.

reply

Likewise. Lots of tv shows to keep me occupied. Too many in fact that I can't even keep up if not backlog.

reply

it is a work in progress

Archie Bunker answers the question in this full version of "Those Were the Days", the opening song to All in The Family. The show is about a middle-aged conservative bigoted white male horrified by the social changes happening throughout society in the 70s.
