I’m always suspicious of public apologies by celebrities. They come across as shallow attempts to paint oneself in a better light rather than true contrition. Even here, Smith alludes to some “history” as an extenuating circumstance for the battery.

reply

We know the history already. Rock took shots at Will and his wife at the Oscars years prior.

reply

Yes Marty.

He ruined the apology by making that profane comment. He is going public with an apology and putting it on social media for everyone to see.

"I’m trying not to think of myself as a piece of sh*t."

He should have said "I’m trying not to think of myself as worthless." Or something like that.

But "piece of sh*t"? It didn't work.

reply

You can take the man out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the man.

reply

^Emphatically this! No educated, civilized person could even countenance that using that phrase in a public statement of contrition.

Eschew ghettospeak.

reply

Using a curseword doesn't ruin the apology. It's not a formal document or speech.

reply

It was a formal apology. He was making a video for the public and for Chris Rock.

"I’m trying not to think of myself as a piece of sh*t."

reply

Spin, spin, spin, spin. The only thing he's sorry for is sullying his carefully crafted good guy image. Notice how he still hasn't given the Oscar back yet? If he wanted to show true penance, that's what he should do. But he never will because he's not really sorry. He should've declined the Oscar on that night. That would've showed that he knew what he did was wrong and that he didn't deserve an award after what he did.

I wouldn't think the Oscar itself is at issue when it comes to The Slap.
Sure it would look like a noble sacrifice but the two aren't really dependent on one another.
If I won the lottery and ran someone over on the way to picking up my winnings, I don't think they could withhold the lottery award.
He can be sorry - or not - but seems like he won the Oscar fair-and-square and shouldn't be expected to give that up.
btw, I have no particular fondness for Will Smith. Maybe more the opposite, but ....

reply

Affirmative action won him the Oscar. And he knows it. That's why he though he was able to act big and bad that night, because he knew he won. So he figured he was untouchable and that he was the shit and show everybody just what he thought of himself. He didn't earn anything. And that lotto analogy is just weird man.

reply

If Affirmative Action and weird is the way you want to go, then fine.

reply

I'd rather him not give back the oscar. I think it's weird when ppl get their awards taken away due to unrelated crimes.

reply

Sure, Will. Apologizing months late is going to help.

reply

Yeah, I thought that it if he really was going to do it, a few months ago would have been the time. I'm wondering "why now?"

reply

We have no way of knowing what he's done behind the scenes. He very likely has already done so privately. He probably felt it better to take time to process everything & let things settle before rushing with a public apology. I feel it was probably the wise decision.

reply

No we don't know. I would have been fine if months down the road it came out that Will apologized and all was said and done. I'm just wondering why the publicness of this apology now. I don't really care about what is done behind the scenes, but these public apologies always have an agenda.

reply

He apologized a couple of days afterwards. What's weird is, why is he apologizing again, publicly? Chris Rock evidently doesn't want to talk to him right now. It feels a bit too obviously self-serving for him to tell us about that.

reply

Well played so far

reply

Nobody cares anymore, like the movie Wild Wild West. It's a shame, of course, he should spend time and a half in the rehab centers. Feel when Chris Rock feels he's ready to make it up to him.
This is for the wider audience who, as passive fans learn to expect the unexpected.

reply

He slapped Chris Rock. So what and there’s people in Hollywood who have done far worse and still have careers. If he should be ridiculed for anything it should be for his shame marriage.

reply

If he should be ridiculed for anything it should be for his shame marriage.

Why do so many of you care about his marriage? Seriously.

reply

Because that's the root of this whole situation, sorry you didn't get that.

reply

How so? How would if be different if Will slapped Chris before Jada was with someone else?

reply

Why do so many of you care about his marriage? Seriously.

it seems people who don't care strangely care about personal life when it doesn't align with there views or isn't traditional then they all of sudden care

reply

He Apologized Twice i think all is forgiven

reply

It takes more than two "sorry's" to change peoples minds about such an abysmal act.

reply

did you even watch the apology man you people set you standards way to high for Forgiveness

reply

Yes, I saw the video. It's the Will Smith we all know and like. My point is that some people - not all of course - will not forgive and forget that easily.

But we will see. Time heals all wounds. But I don't think he will ever be back to where he was, though.
