Americans watch World Cup?????

For a movie about aliens, time travel, this is the most unrealistic scene for me.

reply

Weirdly, a lot of Americans do pretend to give a shit about soccer when the world cup rolls around, but I'm guessing that world cup parties would be few and far between.

reply

I live in America and I know a bunch of Americans

Nobody gives a shit about Soccer here

Hell, I had to google what 'The World Cup' even was

Stupid low scoring sport...keep it to yourselves rest of the world!

reply

You're either ignorant or trolling. The World Cup is one of the most-watched sporting events by Americans, especially when the US team is playing. The USA vs. Ghana match from the 2014 World Cup had a larger American audience than all but one NBA playoff game that year, every game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Kentucky Derby, the final round of The Masters and the Daytona 500.

Try getting a seat in a sports bar at World Cup time, regardless of what two countries are playing. I've seen crowds three rows deep peering into windows of packed bars watching entire matches that don't include the U.S. team.

reply

I'm not reading all of that!

...Yeah, a post made in jest as bait for some of our non-American MC folks to give me grief for😁

Welcome to the party pal!

Looked like Scotland V Brazil in the final.

Very realistic.

reply

lol
Freeedoom!

reply

i think it was supposed to be italy not scotland

reply

Yeah. I wondered if they had done something weird like film an American football and regular football sequence and changed it for different regions like they sometimes do with in film adverts that they feel more are more suitable for specific regions that might not have that particular brand.

I was sure it was American football in the trailer but I went and checked and nope, just football.

reply

To be fair, barely anyone really watched the game. It was foremost a christmas party (final is on Dec 18 2022) and the soccer game was running in the background. People really only got interested when the Brazilian was running alone to hit the goal. This makes it quite believable to me.
In other parts of the world, where football is a thing, people would actively watch it. They might chat with their friends, but would always have one eye on the screen - even if both teams are not theirs. That's at least my own experience.

reply

Yeah it was pretty realistic, only the little girl was interested and her parents where there supporting her. In a South American country all the guys would be watching.

reply

Yeah it looked like this was some weird product placement or something.

America wasn’t even playing lol. 0% there’d be a bbq with this match unless you’re a 1st gen migrant.

reply

No, the usual ignorance of Yanks amuses the real world. Again.

reply

Go play with your SOCCER balls.

reply

Hey at least we dont play HandEgg.

reply

Woke, i.e. American sports bad, international soccer good?

reply

Its not woke to understand that HandEgg is inferior to FootBall.
