1 billion? I somewhat expect this to flop. The nostalgia factor might save it somewhat if it's lucky. But I think it won't attract much of the marvel/starwars/pixar crowd. Those films gross a billion.

shareUnder development forever, there probably should have been sequels in the 90s. Expectations may be too high for most. No doubt, people that had their first date at Top Gun will have a reunion date for Maverick, all these decades later. I’d say it gets $450m.

The trailer is good, as long as reviews are too it will gross over $700m. NTtD and F9 did.
It looks like F9's highest grossing country was China. No wonder Cena groveled.
I thought I heard Top Gun was banned in China (below thread), but it's not easy to get a clear answer from Google. I don't think the film will gross a billion, especially if China is out, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility. Younger audiences prop up box office, and a movie described as a Gen X wet dream (a dad beating Millennials and Zers) may not grab the spandex summer crowd.

I thought the same thing about the new Halloween movies, but the majority of people in the audience were under 25. This might appeal to young audiences as well.

shareNo, it doesn't. Horror is in the lower half at best in popularity and box office. Action, adventure, thriller, and comedy are all bigger genre stars than horror. I don't know if Top Gun will reach 1bil without China, but this will shatter any horror film, b/c a big action pic with Tom Cruise is a much bigger draw, and weekend projections already suggest it will be a hit. And young audiences don't have to be Top Gun fans to show up for a tent pole like this. Just like they don't have to be fans of the 1st Jurassic Park to show up to the latest installment. They are intentionally made to work as standalones, and action translates to the foreign market with ease b/c it's never hard to follow.
