Why can't anybody make ONE horror movie with intelligent people?

Someone who has seen horror movies and is aware of cliches and refuses to be a part of them.

reply

I'm not too sure if intelligent people=people who've seen horror movies, but there are some out there.

The Scream movies have characters who know all the cliches, and that's the basic premise.

The Final Girls is based on that as well. A bunch of teens are stuck in a horror movie.

Cabin in the Woods - Similar to that too.

I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but unless the characters know they're in a horror movie, or something similar, I don't see how having knowledge of the cliches is going to be worked in the story as a realistic thing people would think of. It has to be in something that's self-aware to work, I think.

reply

I love the Scream franchise. But even those characters fell into the trap of the clichés.

Remember early in Scream when Sydney thought she was talking to Randy on the phone. She said she didn't watch that sh## because it was always big breasted women running UP the stairs when they should be running OUT the door.

"It's insulting", she said.

A few minutes later when Sydney is being chased, she does the exact same stupid thing she accused movie characters of doing, running up the stairs!

reply

Ha, yes she did! Quite a few of them fell into that "trap", but knowing how something goes, doesn't mean you're not going to fall for it yourself. I mean they were supposed to be in the real world, and you don't expect for events to happen like they do in movies. But the Scream movies were following the cliches to parody them, right? I think they still kind of count :)

reply

Yeah I love the way the Scream series acknowledges the clichés. The characters know the pitfalls and then FALL right into them. ha!

One of my favorites is Randy (Jamie Kennedy) yelling at Jamie Lee Curtis on the TV screen while watching Halloween.

He's advising her to "Turn around Jamie! Turn around!" while he should have been doing the same thing.

I saw the movie several times, but one night I was watching it alone and that scene struck me. I thought that he SHOULD turn around. Then I thought that I should turn around too! I actually did turn to see if someone was behind me!

Those movies can play with your imagination!

reply

Haha, that's cute you did that. I sometimes check under my bed like a little kid after watching horror movies alone.

reply

They really do! I'm like that with movies with things in the mirrors. I'm always a bit apprehensive about looking in a mirror after watching one of those.

That scene with Jamie Kennedy is the one that's really stuck with me from Scream. And I like the character most out of everyone.

reply

Scary movie mirrors? I know! I've seen a few shows about Bloody Mary. Say her name in front of a mirror three times while turning around and she is supposed to appear. I've been tempted to do it for fun but I chicken out!

Jamie Kennedy's character was just about my favorite from Scream. Randy's death in the next movie was the only one that really made me sad.

reply

Well yeah, that was the joke in Scream. It also shows that horror movies don't really work if people are too smart. I'm also sure the filmmakers want that reaction of the audience yelling at the screen in frustration due to the characters' actions.

reply

Well, I know this isn't what you're looking for, but I'll comment anyway.

The kids' show Arthur actually addressed this in one or two episodes, lol. Brain was watching a horror movie with his friends, and he just boredly said what was going to happen, i.e. "A monster will come up behind her." Then he had a nightmare or something where he was stuck in a horror movie.

And I believe when The Librarians show did horror-themed episodes, the characters also kinda knew what to expect and managed to outsmart the monsters.

Anyway... Maybe the presence of the monsters tends to prohibit the characters of a horror movie from acting rationally.

reply

Those cartoons make me feel so old n nostalgic that I can't believe I grew up and can't never go back.

reply

Haha. We can still be kids at heart. ;3

I think that Geico has already answered this oft asked question 😀

reply

To answer your question, "Why can't anybody make ONE horror movie with intelligent people?"
They have been made. They just haven't been made lately.

reply

It'd have been better if you had mentioned few.

reply

Just my opinion. Here are a few....
The Haunting,1962
The Innocents,1961
The Others,2001

This is my idea of horror with intelligent characters. there are others.
I like many other types of horror. Even some of the ones with idiots who ought to get out of the house when they know they are in danger. They are great fun!

reply

I agree with your list, and I'll add The Changeling (1980), with George C. Scott, who played a great, very intelligent character.

reply

Oh yes! I'd add the Changeling too! George C. Scott has always been one of my favorite actors. I have enjoyed so many of his performances over the years. As always, he was great in The Changeling.
Good call!

reply

George C was a great actor, and I agree he was outstanding in The Changeling.

reply

my favorite ghost movie of all time

reply

Sticking my nose in here but The Changeling is my favorite horror movie of all time.
A lot of which I attribute to Scott doing what I think I would do in that situation.
To me this is a true horror movie. Doesn't need the slashing and blood to be a great movie.
Not that I mind those type of movies but this is a good old fashioned ghost story.

reply

Feel free to stick your nose in, Godewey! It's one of my favourites as well and, as with you, one of the reasons I liked GCS's character and performance in it is because he behaved in ways that were intelligent and logical, and either the same or similar to how I would have behaved, in the same situation.

I.e., he got in a plumber or heating person to check the plumbing or heating when he heard that regular banging at the same time for two mornings in a row. I'd have done the same, assuming that was the most reasonable explanation for the occurrence. But the plumber/heating person's explanation wouldn't have cut it for me either, as it was too much of a coincidence that it happened two days in a row, at the exact same time, given there was no sort of timing device involved.

reply

The only thing I might not have done is the séance. Of course this movie is 40 years ago.
I say that at my age right now. If I was my age now 40 years ago it might be different.
Séance's and ESP were prevalent back then. I do know one thing, If I threw a ball away and
that ball came back down the stairs I do believe I wouldn't have stuck around.

reply

I probably would have even done the seance, after going to the university for advice, and being advised to have one. What other options did he have? Go to the police? Er, no. Maybe ignore it, but as we know, that wasn't going to work.

And,
the ball was wet from the ocean! so 99% certainty it was the same ball
. I may have bailed at that point too. Wouldn't have wanted to leave unless I felt I truly had no other option. It was a great house, no doubt reasonable rent, with a piano and music room, and he'd already settled in.

reply

It was a great house. I'm sure this wasn't the case for him, but it seems when people in movies
get into a situation like this a lot of them can't leave. Like they have all their money tied up
and have no other alternative.
I'm also curious about things. I'm a do-it-yourself type of person.
So it would bug the hell out of me not to know what was causing all of the things to happen. I've had birds, bats, chipmunks, and a squirrel in my house last month. All making strange noises. Wouldn't stop
until I figured it out.

The noises ok, the bath was pushing it. I still draw the line at a ball coming down my stairs.

reply

I always wondered why the Joseph the ghost attacked Claire.

reply

It's been a while so forgive me if I don't remember all the details.
I always thought it was a way to get George C. Scott's attention.
Almost force him to do something.

reply

It was right toward the end - John had presented the evidence to the senator and claire arrives at the house 1:34

reply

Wow. I really need to watch this again. My memory once again is way off.

The only thing I can think of is he was just angry. He also went after Scott too.
He still didn't get exactly what he wanted.
The opposite could also be true. Maybe it was more of a scare tactic. Joseph
knew he was close to getting what he wanted. He then in turn was trying to scare
her/them out of the house to protect them. Because he knew what was coming.

reply

possible he was trying to scare her off but he damn near killed her. still my favorite ghost story.

reply

Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Those characters were anything but stupid. I love that movie!

reply

Don't Breathe (2016)

reply

Everything was a-ok except for the part where the blind guy sntached the gun from Money. I can't exactly blame them cuz they didn't know what he was capable of. Still if I were him, I wouldn't have let him come near me, blind or not.

reply

That movie tripped me out. I seriously told people NOT to watch it. Just me, some of them get to me. haha

reply

The Descent (2005). I don't think the protagonists made stupid mistakes in that movie.

Wolf Creek (2005). I haven't seen it in a while but as far as I remember, the same applies here.

reply

Yeah, they did. The woman leading the descent lied to her companions. Lying is always a mistake.

With the benefit of hindsight, it was a mistake for them to have trusted her.

And The Second Descent was a mistake from every angle.

Examples of intelligent horror movies? To quote Rod Serling, submitted for your consideration: The Company of Wolves, Byzantium, and the entire Ginger Snaps series.

reply

She was their friend, of course they trusted her. If we start counting lies as mistakes, what movie, horror or otherwise, doesn't have those?

I'm glad you like The Company of Wolves, that's one of my favorites as well, although not many people have heard about it. Yes, that's another good example of an intelligent horror. I'll also add Triangle (2009) to the list.

reply

I never heard of The Company of Wolves. That's on the top of my watchlist now

reply

It's not exactly a typical horror, more of an allegory disguised as a horror. It has great actors and amazing scenery. I hope you like it.

BTW, I put Byzantium on my watchlist.

reply

Thank you, Apis. I am flattered. It has the same director as The Company of Wolves, and a young actress who really impresses me, Siaoarse Ronan, as the lead. My favorite vampire movie.

reply

It has the same director as The Company of Wolves

That's one of the reasons I put it on my watchlist. I'm also always in search of intelligent horrors (and intelligent time travel movies)

reply

Have you seen the original Time Machine, with Rod Taylor? You would like it.

But stay very far away from any CW TV show that involves time travel!

reply

I've seen it a couple of times. It still holds up as one of the best movies in the genre.

reply

from 1984 starring Angela Lansbury ????

reply

Too bad The Company of Wolves isn't available on Netflix here in the States.

reply

It seems to be on youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-7gPbYqEFw

reply

Now I'm intrigued as well, and will see if it's on Netflix.

reply

Cat, it's my favorite werewolf movie, and I'm a werewolf movie aficionado. There are too many vampire movies, and not enough (good) werewolf movies. I think there are two reasons why: (1) Economics: the cost of a big hairy suit and the price for the FX of a convincing full-body transformation versus the price for a pair of fangs. (2) The misguided belief that vampires are SEXY. "My God! He's penetrating me and I'm HELPLESS TO STOP HIM, so I'm not a slut," versus the belief that werewolves just tear shit apart. In arcane tradition, a vampire is a corpse inhabited by a demon. It's as sexy as Dead Wife on American Gods. Puke me out. According to the same tradition, a werewolf always tries to kill what it loves, and can only be killed by that person. So, from the perspective of intimate contact, a vampire is disgusting and a werewolf is passion incarnate. Not that Hollywood gives a shit. I, however, care very much.

Plus. a wolf will rip a vamp 18 new assholes in about 3 nanoseconds.

reply

Wish I could see it, even though I'm not particularly a werewolf or horror fan, R_Kane, but I am a fan of good movies and now I'm curious to see this one. Too bad it's not on Netflix, else I'd watch it tonight.

reply

No problem, it's on youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-7gPbYqEFw

The quality won't be ideal, but at least you can watch it here.

reply

Great, thanks, Apis! Guess what I'll be watching tonight?

reply

I agree. She only lied to get them to go to that cave and of course they would have trusted her. It wasn't their first time caving and I'm sure that's why she thought they could handle it and why they thought they could trust her.

reply

Add me to the list. I was talking about this movie not that long ago.
Also my favorite werewolf movie. At one time I had it on VHS. I really wish I would have kept
all those movies. I just figured everything would eventually come out on DVD.

reply

The Company Of Wolves is a classic and such a beautiful film. Best version of Little Red Riding Hood that there ever was.

Also American Werewolf deserves a mention.

The recent film It Follows wasn't too bad as an intelligent horror film.

reply

"The Blob" with Steve McQueen

reply

Steve McQueen was the only smart one in that whole town!

reply

I raise you this...

https://moviechat.org/tt1301160/The-Horribly-Slow-Murderer-with-the-Extremely-Inefficient-Weapon

The movie might be stupid, but the people in the movie wasn't.

reply

After looking through my movie library, let me add another one, which is also a werewolf movie done by the director of The Descent: Dog Soldiers. Not a stupid character in the movie. Stars Kevin McKidd, Sean Pertwee and Liam Cunningham.

reply

One movie I recommend to every horror movie fan. Wish there was a sequel. Rarely people fight back in the movie. Werewolves were cunning than ever so were the soldiers.
Too bad they were betrayed
reply

I mean, what other movie ever showed a guy in a boxing match with a werewolf!? Inspired fun!

reply

I can think of one movie that had intelligent characters, The Ring(2002). Rachel used her intelligence and reporter skill set to save herself and her son from the curse.

reply

Writing intelligent characters is exceedingly difficult.

Writing intelligent characters is exceedingly difficult.

Maybe so, but as is listed, plenty of films have been made!
