Were the Matrix trilogy some of the first fully Woke movies?

Wokeness has become mainstream nowadays, but Matrix trilogy was released in 1999-2003, 20 years ago.

Let's check the evidence.

Female / Non-white.
- Trinity (female).
- Morpheus (black)
- Tank (black / asian)
- Dozer (black)
- Switch (female)
- Apoc (half-maori)
- The Oracle (black woman)
- Seraph (asian)
- The Keymaker (asian)
- Rama Kandra (indian)
- Kamala (black)
- Niobe (black)

EVIL ------

Bore off with your repetitive woke crap nonsense , if you have issues with Black dudes being in movies then delete your account and watch Gone with the wind.

reply

Nice strawman. Now try engaging with his point.

reply

You beat me to that diagnosis!

reply

Why are you counting Bane as evil? He was a good guy that was possessed by Smith. Also, the Trainman was more neutral than outright evil. Oh, and for evil characters who are female, you forgot Persephone.

reply

If that's the case the main character shouldn't have been white.

reply

He sacrifices himself so the rainbow brigade will survive. But, I agree, even the sacrificial "chosen one" should not be a white male in Woke World.

reply

That’s a good point.

In Knives Out wokies will try to make out that the film doesn’t really hate whites because Harlan Thromby. But look closer - he’s only treated sympathetically because he gives his life to protect a brown illegal immigrant and gives her all of his vast wealth.

Ryan Johnson is a mentally ill Marxist, on par with The Wachowskis. It’s just a matter of time before he becomes Ryan Johnson-less.

reply

I didn't watch Knives Out. Mostly because I wasted so much money sitting in the theater while Last Jedi played on the big screen as I slept in the comfy reclining chairs.

reply

They are for all over the world, is normal if they are from diferent nationalities and ethnicity, woulnd't been realistic if all of them or even the majority were white

Why everybody have to be in one extreme or the other?

Is like people need to be or totally woke to the level of a mental disability or extreme paranoic and kinda of racist

reply

It is my understanding that Keanu Reeves is of 8 different heritages. So in that sense, it puts his casting as The One in more perspective.

reply

He's an actor, it's about what he looks. And he looks like a standard white.

reply

lol Keanu does not look standard white.

reply

@acidraindrop

I totally agree. He himself identify as a person of color. ☺

Read some where the role of Neo was originally for Brandon Lee play that character, he would have also been just as great as Neo. 😭

reply

Holy snaps, could you imagine the fight scenes with Brandon Lee in the role? That would have been insane!

reply

Most definitely. 😳👏

reply

lol - really?

Well, shit - I bet I got some color in me as well then. Heck, all peeps originated in Africa, I hear - even white folks, so fuck it - I'm african.

reply

were not sure about that anymore. The oldest human ancestor bones have been discovered a few years back, in what is basically modern greece.

reply

Very good point. I remember hearing that they made lots of the ‘freed minds’ minorities because wealthy white people would be happy in The Matrix, but that’s a very American-centric view of the world. Whites are a relative global minority, the elites of each nation will rarely be white, and the divide between rich and poor is far greater outside the liberal, capitalist, democratic West.

I sort of didn’t notice the racism because Keanu is white (although actually kinda mixed race as another poster pointed out) and he’s the Jesus figure. It’s not like Last Jedi where the villains are all white males and the heroes are every combination other than white and male.

Also, the sequels feature a fair few white male good guys in Zion, so your theory loses some credibility if you include them, but you’re right - The Matrix is massively woke.

Also, let’s not forget that The Wachowskis wanted Will Smith or Brandon Lee to play Neo. I’m guessing the studio told them to have a white lead couple and they gritted their teeth.

Nope. 23 years ago didn't have the same political perspective we have today. Internet wasn't used as much, cell phones weren't common everywhere, 24 hr network news was still a distant luxury of cable and satellite, and DVD just started to become more affordable though VHS was still an option.

This was pre 9/11. The directors have said that the matrix is a representation of everything from religion to transgenderism. They do this every time they need cash for a project.

It's only a movie series and the first one is the only decent film (IMHO). It's your typical heroes journey that got bogged down by overuse of CGI and club culture.

reply

23 years ago didn't have the same political perspective we have today.

That's why the topic is "Were the Matrix trilogy some of the FIRST fully Woke movies?".

reply

Let's simplify my answer for you then:

No.

They didn't have the woke politics of today.

reply

The simple answer is - It could not be because Woke did not exist 23 years ago.

reply

It already existed, but it wasn't mainstream, at least in movies. When it comes to literature, you can notice the growing trend during the 90s, 10-15 years before the same trend happened in movies.

reply

Woke and diverse aren’t the same thing. Movies have been diverse long before the wokists started complaining about it, and they haven’t contributed anything to diverse representation since they infiltrated entertainment media.

Diversity is about promoting new characters from different regions and putting in actual effort to make people like them; wokeness is about making pre-existing characters look bad and promoting new characters relying only their race, gender, and/or sexuality, and prioritizing agendas over characterization and entertainment.

Now V for Vendetta? THAT was a woke movie:
- anti Christian
- anti American
- pro Muslim
- pro LGBT
- straight white bad guys
- female protagonist
- deformed possibly asexual male protagonist

Of course, I'm purposefully reaching with some of those points, but V for Vendetta fits the woke mold a lot more than the Matrix movies do.

reply

You're right in my book.
I hate it when people confuse woke and diverse and it seems people with extreme points of view can't see the difference.

reply

That's a darn good point.

Even I cringed and felt sick with the pro-Rainbow Reich propaganda in V For Vendetta.

reply

I disagree.

Terms that refers to ideologies or religions are quite specific and point to a specific set of beliefs and moral rules. 'Islam', for example, means literally 'peace', and 'Muslim' means 'peaceful'. However, if we're talking about Islam, we're not talking about the generic term 'peace', but about a specific religion. Quite the irony: the religion of peace is not exactly the most peaceful religion.

The same happens with the term 'Diversity'. It doesn't mean that if you have a Chinese character, you'd better cast a Chinese actor (which is more immersive and realist). That's just the normal trend in a movie industry that has become more and more international.

When we talk about Diversity and Wokeness, we're talking about some specific set of beliefs and moral rules that includes, among other things, the demonization of whites, and which ends up being extremely homogeneous and repetitive. Quite the irony again: this neo-religion of Diversity is not exactly very diverse.
