FACT: The title of the show is Star Trek

not Star Trek:The Original Series. Prove me wrong.

reply

It’s like when they call “Star Wars” “A New Hope”. No the name is “Star Wars”.

reply

I've argued this point with younger people. Initially, when it was released in '77, it was just called Star Wars. I don't recall when and why "A New Hope" was added.

reply

It was because the sequel was decided it would be Number 5 and Lucas retconned Star Wars to IV. Because he decided that the saga would be Star Wars, like Flash Gordon or Batman, then each episode would need its own name, so Star Wars became Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope.

Tah-dah!

But, yeah, I usually refer to it as "Star Wars".

reply

"A New Hope" was added for the 1981 theatrical re-release, a little over a month before "The Empire Strikes Back" would be released.

reply

I don't recall it ever being referred to as a New Hope by fans or critics until the 90's.

Lucas changed to A New Hope, so its now canon.

reply

Originally, it was just Star Trek. Since there has subsequently been so many other series, it's been a good distinction to have.

reply

I’d rather be a fan of Star Trek than of an STD...

Lots of interesting facts and trivia about the original Star Trek in the above short video.

reply

they should call it "the one where bill shatner karate chops people on the shoulder"

reply

Its a necessity, surely?

If you said to someone 'I watched Star Trek last night', they would inevitably ask you which film, series etc.

And if you watched the original series last night, you would reply 'The original series', would you not?

reply

smart

reply

In the future, they’ve discovered the Achilles heel of all life forms is in the trapezius muscles apparently. Spock’s pinching and Kirk’s chopping are the most devastating moves in hand to hand combat

reply

Not to mention that getting his shirt torn seems to do for Kirk what Spinach did for Popeye. No adversary in the series ever defeated ripped-shirt Kirk. (Amok Time doesn't count -- the shirt was cut not torn, and McCoy basically gave Kirk a Mickey Finn.)

reply

lol. The more his shirt is ripped, the tougher Kirk gets! Akin to Hercules and The Hulk (whose strongifying force is anger instead of torn blouses)

reply

I'm assuming you say this because you disregard or ignore every other spin-off of Star Trek?

reply

IMDb changed it in 2019 from Star Trek to Star Trek: The Original Series but the title sequence still displays Star Trek. Unless they change the title sequence, it's still Star Trek.

CBS requested the change. Anywho, it is now "Star Trek" except when you search. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060028/

IMDb changed it in 2019 from Star Trek to Star Trek: The Original Series....

I went there just now to check something else -- and it's now back to the original pristine Star Trek. One of life's little victories!

reply

It's original title (before a few last edits and going on the air) was "Wagon Train to the Stars."

reply

I knew that but you're implying the show was very nearly called that, which I don't believe. They MUST'VE changed the title early on.

reply

Was that really the working title?

reply

It was the hook Roddenberry used to sell the series. It was referring directly to the show Wagon Train. Wagon Train was an anthology show; that meant while it had a regular cast, the attention was on the guest star for each episode and the story revolved around the guest star. In the sixties, anthology shows were the most prestigious programs; considered superior to shows without guest stars or that told a single story over a season (not at all common at the time.).

His original intent was that Star Trek would be similar; a regular cast with featured guest stars. It wandered from that ideal fairly quickly.Though guest stars would continue to be important, the story was focused more on the regular cast, especially on what would become the Big Three of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.
