What happened?

During the first half of this decade she was on fire and looked like she was taking over but after 2015 it is like she has collapsed and her career took a massive downturn and she is no longer the "IT girl" in Hollywood and is not really doing much. Did she end up being a 15 minutes of fame type of fad?

reply

She's focused on fixing democracy in the US and saving the planet from Donald Trump. Remember?

reply

Yeah good luck with that.

reply

[deleted]

Her horrible attitude happened.

reply

What did she do/say?

reply

It all started when she snapped at that one reporter for looking at his phone when she wasa making a press release.
The reporter was asian and was looking at a translation when interviewing her.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_zja9pepgU

reply

Oh that's easy. She got too political, shot off her mouth, and insulted half of her fans out there in America. She then got parts in really shitty movies, like "Passengers," "Joy," "American Hustle," and "mother!" There was also a concerted effort on behalf of her alienated base to bombard her movies with tons of bad reviews, which helped to ruin her career.

That whole "taking a year off to fix democracy" is just a cheap ploy to cover up the fact that her career is over. Unless she can shut up and act in a film people actually like, she's on the outs in Tinseltown.

reply

Yeah I think so too and with young actresses coming up like Margot Robbie, Florence Pugh, Saoirse Rohan I think the competition is stiffer than ever for Laurence.

reply

The best thing a celebrity can do is keep their politics private, especially in this day and age. It's not a good idea to alienate half your audience, particularly if they're the ones paying for the tickets to see the films you're in. If you expect to maintain your fame and keep your career going, you don't make the fans upset.

reply

They grow on trees. So-called actors in the US aren’t trained thespians. They’re paid for their looks. There are a million more where she care from. And next year there will be a million more.

Unfortunately for those who temporarily win the Hollywood lottery, your 8th grade education and masters degree is sucking dick is of no value to us.

reply

Yep... If you look back to the golden age of Hollywood the actors were still picked based on their looks, but the studios would then spend tons of money giving them acting lesson and teaching them the craft all while making sure they kept their public image clean and free from controversy... Somewhere along the line the studios realized they didn't need to waste the money on training actors and this is the outcome.. a revolving door of high school dropouts that can't act any better than any other kid from a high school play and which are too stupid to keep their mouth shut.

Of course I do give the skanky Jennifer Lawrences of the world a little more respect than the golden scrotum actor that only get their jobs because of who's scrotum they came from or who's snatch they were squirted out of... At least Lawrence had to suck dick to get her jobs... What did the likes of Sophia Coppola or Jonah Hill have to do beyond being born to parents in the business.

reply

Right, except mother! was great. Largely it was mismarketed and ended up misunderstood. Loved it.

reply

How can you like a creepy movie that has baby-eating in it?!

reply

Did you see it?

reply

I read about it on wikipedia and saw Honest Trailers. That was enough.

reply

Hah yeah, it is intense! Maybe not as sick as you might be expecting though.

I saw it in the theater, having not seen the trailer and knowing absolutely nothing about it, and it really blew me away. It left me in a very surreal, magical state of mind for the rest of the day. Quite a richly layered, intriguing, bold, creative and beautiful film that hits you right in the guts. From the sound of the responses of those who had some expectation of what it was going to be beforehand, I think that's the way to do it.

reply

I barely watch modern TV or movies anymore due to the political bullshit either in the products themselves or by the actors in their spare time. They have such an easy job - entertain and are paid far too much for it.

reply

I have a similar problem. Most of the time, I watch stuff on Stream, and it's nice not to have stupid commercials bombarding me....on the paid services. The older tv shows/movies are better simply because they aren't spouting a very obvious political message.

reply

These days they aren't even clever about it either. Characters wear t shirts with political slogans, characters just deliver political statements that have nothing to do with the story. Atleast be creative with it! I guess they don't want to risk anyone missing the point!

I'm not much better with Conservative agendas either. I can't get into some WW2 films because they are obvious "Rah Rah"recruiting films. The heavy handed approach tends to kill it for me.

reply

Recruiting films? How? WWII was fought almost 70 years ago. How can it be used to recruit people into the armed services?

reply

They were intended as such at the time. Regardless the heavy handed approach can ruin a film.

My bet is: She was having sex with Harvey Weinstien and that got her movies and he fixed the Oscar. Now, everyone knows this and she will never really get any parts or big movies again.

I thought she was a real "girl next door" type after Silver Linings and then I saw photos of her and her female friend smoking weed on some hotel balcony. Smoking weed was illegal and they both looked like female criminals I have dealt with working in jail. They had that "fuck!" look or prostitutes who use a lot of drugs and are semi-lesbian.

Then, the nude photos hit and a girl like that doesn't need to send nude photos, so she has no class or pride.

I then figured the whole Oscar thing was sexual in nature.

Weinstien hit the fan and she has been out of the picture.

I'm not a super genius detective and I'm sure lots of people in Hollywood hate her.

reply

I believe this. There was rumors about her and Weinstein even before the scandal.

reply

For sure, her "girl next door" "I am normal" act has been exposed as fake and without the help of Weinstein she now has to rely on her own merits and talent to succeeds which she simply doesn't have.

reply

Yea I remember when she claimed she didn't like mainstream movies and prefered indie movies before she made it big with the hunger games.

reply

The Oscar quid pro quo been bandied about for quite a while, even before the Weinstein wienie thing blew up on him.

Regarding her political activism or her facials having anything to do with her downfall; I don't think that's the case. Face it, she's a good looking girl, but Hollywood is filled with good looking girls just as untalented as Lawrence.

She just hasn't realized it yet..

reply

I don't see her hyped that much anymore in in the media.

She has a fun sense of humor and I liked her.

She also did a good job is several movies. One problem is that he cheekbones are so big they tend to give her an expressionless face, and that affects her acting. As I noted, I liked her off screen persona a lot, but I hate whores.

I have known so many women in real life who are like that I am disgusted. I can't stand people manipulating things for women either, like jobs, awards, etc. It is literally the reason women were kept out of the workplace. And that leads to my hatred of finding out stereotypes are true.

If what we're saying is true, I don't care to see her anymore.

reply

I always liked her girl next door look. Yes, her nude pics were still nice to see in a way but it also showed her as a complete slut which ruins said girl next door image.

reply

She has a personality similar to myself and I thought, man, if I had a daughter, she would be like that. So, I saw her nude pics and she's too young for me and I was thinking of her more as a kid, so they were just gross, not sexy.

I would never want any naked pics from any woman I was in love with.

Unneeded.

reply

It's become very common. I know I will cop flak for saying this and a lot of guys will say I'm full of it or undeserving etc. But to hell with it.

I have had women send me unsolicited nude pics and I don't actually like or want them. For a start it robs me of the chance to "discover" their bodies in person and secondly if they are sending that stuff to me, then they have sent them out to many others. There is nothing special about it.

reply

I love getting a nude pic from a chick I’m about to meet up with, only to save it to my photos album and see that it’s dated months ago. I mean, I’ll still bang her, but one has to wonder how many other men/women have seen the same pic long before she even knew I existed.

reply

Had a woman once offer to send me a photo of what she looked like 10 years ago!! Ummmm yeah... we're not playing "Look what you could have had"!

reply

I have gotten them but then say I don't want or need them.

Everyone I've ever said that to loves it.

Also, if you're saying "bang" about women, you're likely some borderline homosexual.

reply

Would I be shocked if it came out that she slept with Weinstein, I personally wouldn't be. Just my opinion. Do i think a lot of actresses happily slept with him to get ahead? I personally do. Wouldn't shock me that a lot of them are involved in this MeToo thing to get browning points. I'm sure a lot of the women who were abused by him, know the ones who happily gave in to him but are probably been silenced to get their careers back on track. Wouldn't look good, if it came out that a lot of actresses happily did the deed with the devil Weinstein to get ahead.

But if we put that aside for a minute, let's be honest Weinstein pretty much made her in Hollywood. Without him, she wouldn't have won the Oscar, which I said at the time and still stand by today his influence got that over the line. Without his influence and backing she wouldn't have become the new bright young thing of Hollywood. Since his downfall, her career has hit the skids which is pretty telling. A Lot of more noticeable roles came through Weinstein's company. Sexual or not, Weinstein definitely had a big impact on Lawrence's career without a doubt.

Do I think Lawrence was a party girl before she got married? I'm sure she was. Rumors for years that another "It" girl in Scarlett Johansson, was pretty damn wild after her breakthrough with Lost in Translation. And I'm sure plenty of young actresses, slept around and partied like crazy behind the scenes while they projected to the public that they were sweet and innocent. That doesn't bother me, we were all crazy when we were younger.

reply

I agree. I think there were lots of actresses who exchanged sex in return for career advancement. Ian McKellen spoke of it as well where actresses would write "Directors Privileges" on their application for roles, meaning they would sleep with the director for roles. Even the Ancient Greeks mentioned the casting couch.

But then things changed and women realized they could play the game from both sides. Exchange the favours for roles and then claim sexual assault/rape etc.

Did Harvey assault women? Most likely he did but I also think that many of his partners were 100% consensual. I think he made a good point to where at times he may have misinterpreted what he thought were signs of interest. Easy to do.

What is really interesting is how it is all blowing up in women's faces. A lot of men don't want to be alone with women anymore in workplaces due to a fear of false accusations.

reply

I do think a good percentage of the women who were abused by him are telling the truth. I also think some who came out are using it to get themselves a career, and some media attention. I think at least a good portion of those actresses been supportive of the MeToo thing, probably happily slept with him, gave him sexual favors or knew of his abuse towards their fellow women but turned a blind eye to it to save their own skin. That's why I don't like it, I think a lot are using it to cover their own tracks and their own guilt i.e Meryl Steep.

I'm sure Weinstein and other producers or Directors had their way with plenty of attractive young actresses, and I'm sure a lot those actresses did it happily to get roles, just slept with them for fun or did it to get a push ahead on way up the ladder over other talent who worked harder and didn't open their legs to get ahead.

reply

I have noticed that many lesbians I have known have a dull "dry" quality. Scarlet has that as does Kristen Stewart. The people I have known in real life had trauma with males. They do what Freud called "identification with the enemy" and there's where you take on characteristics of your abuser. So, in this kind of case, females take on male characteristics. That's because they hate them but see them as powerful, so then try to be like them. I'm a male so males can't hurt me, kind of thing.

Scarlet went through a "butch" period lately. She always has this distant quality and appears troubled.

She was in movies as a kid and god only knows what she had to deal with.

I think the Harvey Weinstein scandal played a huge, albeit silent role in diminishing her career.

Jennifer Lawrence works for Miramax which was run by Harvey Weinstein. It’s safe to assume Harvey made passes at Jennifer Lawrence. It’s also safe to assume that Lawrence accepted those advances to advance her acting career. No way did she dodge his rape bullet.

She and Meryl Streep have both praised Harvey in public, just weeks before news of Harvey’s misconduct broke. I think some of the public bought that JLaw and Streep had no idea, but the general audience connected the dots easily. To rise to fame, JLaw had to have had sexual relations with Harvey, whether consensual or not. That seemed to have been the game to play if you’re a female actress looking to become a star. Meryl Streep being an actress for over 40 decades (mostly with Miramax) and pretending not to know about Harvey’s misconduct is beyond maddening, but I digress…

JLaw was put in a tough spot- if she also admits to sexual misconduct by Harvey, it makes it look like she slept her way to the top, rather than achieve critical acclaim through her acting chops. If she throws him under the bus, she’s painted as a potential studio liability to other would-be studio harassers. Sort of damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Toss in five consecutive movie flops and these are just several (strong) reasons why Jennifer Lawrence’s career has begun to fade.

reply

I'm assuming it's because she refused Wine-Stain's advances.

reply

More like Wine-Stain got exposed so she couldn't continue with that arrangement.

reply

Yes, that's probable too.

reply

Yeah, Silverlinings was a good film, but the Oscar was a bit much especially since she had little experience. I do not believe she was rejecting Weinstein.

I don't believe you can reject him. If so, you wouldn't be in any films and out of town.

He would like straight up rape women, but not because they wouldn't call cops and they would show up for the movie, but basically he was nearly raping whores. So, he's not the kinda guy who would be like, Ah shucks, Miss Jenn won't let me rape her, but I'll win her over. I know what, I'll get her an Oscar!

I'm sure she was doing everything his fantasy life could dream up.

reply

"I'm sure she was doing everything his fantasy life could dream up."

[Shudderrrr]... the mind boggles.

reply

He is a disgusting looking creature.

If he is used to raping women, then imagine what he's be like if you were cool with it all.

reply

Do you honestly believe that Popcorny?

What we know of old scummy Harvey behavior, he wasn't known to be a man of patience when it came to women saying no to him. Look at Ashley Judd, she was on to becoming a star and once she turned him down, he ruined her career. No way in hell would a young actress from Kentucky, who had a few roles under her belt at the time would hold off his advances and get away with it.

Just a opinion, I think something happened between them (maybe a fling, full on affair or friends with Benefits) and that it was mutual. I'm sure she wasn't the only actress that did it before or after with old Harvey, maybe it was to get head in her career or maybe she actually had feelings for him, which I think would be worse. I think one of the reason's she's kept it quiet on the whole Weinstein thing, as he probably has evidence of it (she's known to have taken a picture or two nude before) or it's well known in Hollywood that she was his play thing, so she isn't going to be up front and center during this MeToo movement cause probably a lot of actresses knew about her and Harvey.

It was rumored for a while even before Weinstein getting caught, that her and him had something going on. So I don't quite buy her pushing back his advances imo.

reply

Yes, Looper, upon further consideration I suppose I don't really believe it.

But what I find even harder to believe, even impossible, is that they had a fling and it was mutual!! The man is the very epitome of a Vietnamese Pot-Belly pig, and there's that disfigured squint eye as well. I can well believe that he had to rape his victims, because it is just incomprehensible to me that any woman except a Bangkok whore would allow him to even look at her!! And even she would bump her prices for that!

And now look at him. "Struggling" into court on a walking-frame, looking pale and feeble. Jesus, every grub tries that one, when they're caught, don't they!

reply

Her time as the "It" girl has come to a end, like it does to a lot of actresses with a ton of hype.

Lawrence is a weird case for me, in terms of her success. I think a lot of it came down to press being on her side especially during her early run and telling the public she's a star without her proving it yet and also having the influence of Harvey Weinstein on her side, it's well known she was his last pet project before his downfall. I still stand by without him she wouldn't have won that Oscar. If you look at her C.V of films, take out Hunger Games and X-Men films (those would have been successes with or without Lawrence in them). Can you name a memorable film or role she's done, probably her best turn to date is probably Winter Bone and that's been 10 years or so now. I don't think she's a bad actress but she's massively overrated by a lot of people.

I think her next few films will be important to see if she be around as a A Lister for much longer, I do agree it's slightly slipped away from her.

reply

Her career always had an expiry date as it was always about her looks. She is nice looking but acting wise I don't see anything special about her I agree.

reply

The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long... and she burned so very, very brightly!
Always found her overrated.
