Ironically but not surprisingly, a 10 year old girl handled this harmless situation significantly better and more maturely than her own dad and pretty much most of the people posting in this thread.

Your concerns are valid and I think you both handled the situation perfectly.

Whether or not it’s racism is a moot point, I’d say the number one issue is why a child care professional would say something as insensitive to a child in their care. Age is no excuse, if you are going to say something that has the obvious potential to make a little girl feel inferior then you simply are not competent enough for the job.

But again, your daughter showed great maturity in her reaction, which I can only assume is the result of a loving upbringing, so kudos to you Andy King!
