My daughter has experienced her first incidence of racism towards her.

My daughter is 10 this year and has been lucky enough to have avoided racism until now. I am Caucasian and my wife is Indonesian 🇮🇩

She is a Cub Scout and the two women who run it are in their 70s.

A recent task was to draw an angel, so she drew one that had brown eyes and dark hair, like herself. One of the leaders told her to do it again because, “angels only have blonde hair and blue eyes.”

When I heard what had happened I was livid and wanted to make a complaint because you just can’t say things like that nowadays. Anyway, my daughter just shrugged and said, “Don’t make a fuss Daddy - she’s just an old lady”, which I thought was pretty cool.

So, I’m going to respect my daughter’s wishes and move on; I’m still upset about it though.

reply

I'm so sorry that happened to your daughter and her family. The person who said that it is an idiot and your daughter has a good perspective on it. You have a wonderful, beautiful family.

reply

Thanks. My daughter is a cool kid.

reply

"Every people stupid now, always talking shit."

My Spanish co worker says. I can't say he is wrong. My kid got nailed in the face by a hanger a customer threw. I wanted to go in there and commit murder but was talked out of it.

Signed, million man

reply

The People of Stupid are everywhere.

reply

So true. Sorry your daughter had to deal with this, but she's right. That woman is old and has a closed mind. Sheesh. Kudos to your daughter for ignoring the racist woman.

reply

Grace under pressure - she must get it from her mum.

reply

What a stupid thing to say (the old woman I meant).

reply

She should have one of those warnings that old films have about having outdated opinions.

reply

A great response your daughter could have gave was: "girl, what do you know about angels? You're going to hell."

reply

She’s too polite to do that.

reply

Fake news. I know this couple and they are definitely not going to hell. They go to church every week and do a lot of volunteer work. They are pillars in the community in the classic sense.

reply

To quote Willy Wonka:
“Help. Police. Murder.”

I guess ‘Sunny’ Bournemouth isn’t as exciting as Mooseport.

reply

To be fair though, not many things are.

Disgraceful.

And -- fair play to your daughter -- but I don't think you can excuse that through age. She made her do the drawing again? Very deliberate, active racism rather than the accidental, ignorant kind. There's a power trip involved there. Over a ten year old.

Sorry to make this prediction: but I have a suspicion this won't be the last such incident involving this woman. I think you're going to have to step in eventually. But hopefully I'm wrong. And I think you're right to respect your daughter's wishes this time.

reply

We’re just waiting for nature to intervene.

I won’t be happy if the continues.

Wow, this is a very timely coincidence! I was just falsely accused of hating black people by a trouble maker in my neighborhood. I wound up in a confrontation with a somewhat new neighbor who was allowing and encouraging her dogs to constantly crap in my yard. Anyway, the trouble maker, another neighbor, inserted herself into the fray and was fanning the flames of the conflict by trying to accuse me of racism because the newer neighbor has a black boyfriend. Yeah, I know, this really sounds like drama, which it basically is, but it all just kind of erupted spontaneously. And the real reason the troublemaker made that accusation is because I once openly exposed her to some other black neighbors for being two-faced, treacherous. She was so infuriated during that incident, she threatened to stab me with her bbq skewer. She's an out-of-control, alcoholic nutcase. The black boyfriend was there but remained silent, just taking it all in. He seemed to empathize with me when I accused her of playing the race card.

Yeah, I'm still trying to wind down myself. 😀

reply

Maybe you should throw the poop into Mrs BBQ skewer’s yard.

reply

Oh yeah. She's really gonna love it this summer when that poop will attract a lot of flies, which will eventually land on her food afterwards. 🤮😁

reply

Stupid is as stupid does! Sometimes you just can’t fix stupid! I’m so sorry this was said to your daughter. The remark was pure ignorance! I currently have sympathy angels placed on my buffet. Some have blonde hair and some have what color hair? BROWN! Copy & Paste the following. Then enter each one on Amazon. I would give the links, but each one has a loooong string.

Pavilion Gift Company Elements 9-Inch Sympathy Angel Holding Star, Stars in The Sky

Pavilion Gift Company Pavilion-Because Someone We Love is in Heaven-7.5 Inch Collectible in Memory Ebony Angel Figurine

Pavilion Gift Company 19108 Aunt Angel Figurine, 6", Cream, Tan, Beige, Brown

Pavilion Gift Company 02969 Sympathy Angel Figurine, 9-Inch, Ivory

Pavilion Gift Company Because Someone We Love, Little Bit of Heaven in Our Home Gold & White in Memory Figurine 7.5" Angel Holding Calla Lilies, 7.5 Inch Tall

You have a gracious daughter, but I would not let this go. I would take screenshots of the above and with respect show them to the scout leader. I would say very nicely “My daughter informed me the group was instructed to draw angels. How wonderful because we all need angels in our lives during these trying times. I thought you might be interested in seeing these. They depict how we are here on earth. Aren’t they beautiful?”

One of my favorite comedians! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dJfbJOhR_8 😁 He sort of reminds me of Dean Martin, who also always had a drink in his hand during his routine.

reply

Sorry, I don’t care much for him. A little bit of him & Larry the Cable Guy goes a long way. I love Jeff Foxworthy though. The funniest of all is Jeff Dunham with Achmed the dead terrorist. 😅😂🤣 Many videos of those two online.

reply

Yeah, The Blue Collar Comedy Tour. My favorite was LTCG. I liked Foxworthy's "You know you're a redneck when..." routine.

reply

I’m going to leave it on this occasion.

reply

You know best. I’m so sorry this happened to your family. Yes, the ignorant remark was directed at your wise and gracious daughter, but it hurts the whole family. I feel sad for our Wan King. 😔

reply

My daughter just doesn’t want the fuss.
