Why do you buy movies?

I own less than 10 and they are all special editions.

I guess when it's so easy to stream movies or pick them up at the library like I do, I don't understand having $$$'s invested in owning them.

I know some of you have said you have large collections - simply curious - why ?

reply

I like being able to watch what I want when I want. Not everything is available on streaming and you never know when a movie will removed from a streaming service. I also like special features, which you usually don't get with streaming.

reply

Good answer. Streaming Services seem very dodgy to me because you can't see what they've got before you pay up. It's buying a pig in a poke.

reply

you never know when a movie will removed from a streaming service.

This is the main reason for me. I want to know that I have a movie at all times. I want to be able to watch it when I want to watch it.

reply

Yeah, but don't you also buy movies you've never seen before? Isn't it a waste of money if the movie's disappointing?

reply

I do, but it is not really a waste if I wanted to see the movie, even if it is disappointing.

reply

Do you sell them afterwards or keep all of them?

reply

It depends. Sometimes I sell them and sometimes I keep them. It depends on the movie.

reply

I still don't understand how you have space for so many DVDs! Do you rent a storage unit?😉

reply

WELL,HE SURE DOESNT HAVE HIS OWN ATTIC VIDEO STORE(I GOT LUCKY) FEATURING OVER 20,000 TITLES...ALLABY EITHER HAS SHELVES ON EVERY WALL,OR A LOT OF RUBBERMAID TUBS.

reply

Dang, how big is your attic???

reply

3 CAR DUTCH STYLE BARN...MY DAUGHTER AND I ARE CURRENTLY CONVERTING ITS ATTIC FROM STORAGE TO THE LIBRARY...CURRENTLY THE COLLECTION IS IN A GREAT WALL OF BOXES.

reply

Maybe you can rent them out to folks from your neigbourhood. I kinda miss videostores!

reply

how do you keep the climate conditions correct for movie storage?

reply

DEHUMIDIFIER.ETC.

reply

I want to move into your attic.

reply

No. I have enough room in my apartment. I have several bookshelves and 2 lockers in my apartment.

reply

Okay, I guess my imagination is just kind of running wild! I have a tendency to do that.😜

reply

I do the same thing as you, I think. If I can’t find a movie streaming I’ll order the dvd, especially if it’s priced low. If I dislike the movie I’ll pass it on to someone or sell it on eBay.

reply

Just a different angle here but if you had a family for example it would work out cheaper to buy the movie than take the family to go see it.

reply

Most of my DVDs are from the time before streaming was so big. I can't remember the last time I bought a movie. I'm a dedicated library user for movies & TV shows that aren't on the streaming services I subscribe to.

It's also nice to have things to watch when your internet goes down. For me, that's right now. 😠 Tech coming on Tuesday.

reply

Well, that's a bummer.

reply

Yep. One forgets how much we depend on the internet. The tech was out Friday and we thought the issue was fixed. It worked okay for a couple of hours, then got hinky again. By Saturday morning I had no internet at all. Grrr.

reply

I can still remember a time before we could own our favourite movies and back then the only chance you’d get to watch them again was if it was broadcast on TV or rereleased at a cinema. So the concept of building up your own library of movies when VHS arrived was something I loved, and then I did the same when DVD arrived and now I collect Blu-ray movies.

reply

I don't. I gave away all my DVDs almost a decade ago and never bought one again since. Now it's all digital all the way.

Some here mentioned that they like to be able to watch any movie anytime, but I just don't give movies that high of priority. If I can't watch something then I'll watch other thing instead.

If my Internet is down, I'll play a videogame. Or do the chores. Or take a walk. Movies are fine, but they're not oxygen to me.

reply

Hard media look and sound much better than streamed media. The difference on a good home theater system is drastic.

reply

Firstly streaming services came along a good time after I began collecting. I can't go to the cinema because for some reason it gives me a headache so I watch movies etc on my 42" widescreen TV with decent stereo speakers instead. And I'm a collector ( also collect vintage safety razors ). Finally buying their product is my way of supporting the Entertainment Industry that has given me so much enjoyment ( virtue signalling ! ).

reply

Going out to buy some on days off work is fun and something to do. And I’ve bought a lot from gift cards.

reply

Exactly. I love hitting flea markets, garage sales and thrift stores. My daughters and I go once a week on average.

reply

MY DAUGHTER AND I DO THE SAME...EXCEPT WERE A BIT ADDICTED...IF I HAVENT BOUGHT ANY MEDIA...THE DAY FEELS HOLLOW.

reply

That’s awesome! Do you also buy on eBay? I buy there at least monthly and sell also. Online I buy most of my vinyl on Discogs.

reply

I AM A BUYER AND SELLER ON EBAY AS WELL.

reply

Because I really do watch some movies over and over. I really will pick them up after years, and watch and enjoy them again.

But I'm very picky about what I buy, because the demise of VHS tapes taught me a sharp lesson about planned obsolescence and the folly of trying to build a collection of anything that's dependent on technology. it's happening again, all our DVDs are going to be unplayable in a few years.

reply

I have a big VHS collection and VCR’s on 3 TVs. Although new films obviously aren’t being released on VHS, how does the change in technology make them unplayable or DVD’s in the future for that matter?

reply

My last VCR died about 2 years ago. All those VHS tapes took up so much room. I put the last of the tapes, around 50 of them , outside next to the dumpster and they were gone within 10 minutes. There are plenty of people still watching vhs.

reply

You made someone happy for sure. 😀

reply

I did that ,
then i reembered there were a couple of things taped off tv that were never gonna see again

reply

First, they stop putting new movies on VHS or DVD or whatever, and your library ages, then they stop making players for that technology. So since DVD players all tend to die within one year...

reply

Although I had a few I never collected VHS tapes because I hated the technology. Same with cassette tapes. Dodgy technology and a "high" maintenance pain in the arse with it. So I ended up throwing them out along with my VCR when DVD's and CD's came along.

I have been thinking that I should buy a couple of spare Blu-ray DVD players though to future proof my collection. It looks like the Market is trying to move away from physical media and force people onto streaming services as another attempt to claw back profits from piracy.

reply

There is even an electronics shop close to me that specializes in VCR and cassette players. I have brought 2 cassette decks to them to be repaired in the last Couple of years. When I have a VCR go out I just buy another used on because they are so cheap.

reply

The practice of repairing things instead of throwing them out is something that needs to come back big time.

reply

You got that right!

reply

Nope as long as Apple proves again and again that people don't care about repairability.

reply

I have a Magnavox dual VCR and DVD player that's probably considered antiquated but which still comes through for me beautifully. I haven't used the VCR function in years but I attribute its longevity to this device, which I actually still have laying around, intended for a second-hand store donation someday https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VHS_tape_rewinder

reply

Ah! So for the life of the VCR you have used a separate rewind box. Kind of like keeping your miles low on a car. 👍

reply

Yup, that's exactly what sold me on purchasing that item. The low mileage analogy is apt also. $10 worth of gas usually lasts me about two months.
