Now that the hype has died down:

It seems that everyone is pretty much realizing how bad this movie really is. It's very rewarding to a guy like me who realized this movie was bad the first time I saw it.

reply

Interesting because if we look at objective data. The Force Awakens has a higher imdb, RT, and MC rating than any of the prequels do. Also even if you adjust for inflation The Force Awakens is the second highest grossing Star Wars film behind the original film.

Which means it made more than any film in the Star Wars universe besides a new hope. Also according to academy it is better as well since it received more nominations than any of the prequels. Also no razzie award nominations to the Star Wars name. So yeah as it stands the only movies which best it according to the data is the original three.

So what were you saying about people realizing it to be terrible again? Perhaps you can provide proof?

reply

Did I mention objective data?

reply

You said that it seems that everyone is realizing how bad this movie is. What evidence do you have that supports this claim? None of the data supports your claim. If this movie fell beneath all the other Star Wars films you would have a case but as it stands it does not. So when you say it seems everyone realizes it perhaps you can provide some proof?

reply

This message board. I never cited objective data nor did I ever claim this was an objective fact so fuck off

reply

If it is not a fact why should we listen to you? Go by facts or some random person online hmm? Read the data and weep. I find it funny how desperate you are for validation.

reply

I don’t care if you believe me nor did I force (no pun intended) you to post on my thread

reply

Nope but I figured I would showcase what an insecure child you are. The need for validation proves someone is insecure. It is not enough that you dislike the film you want others to feel the same way. You can't just be content in disliking it is whats funny.

reply

This thread was never about objective data nor did I even imply that it was. Your retorts are irrelevant and juvenile.

reply

So you simply want validation? Quite lame bud.

reply

Just stating my opinion which is what this website is for you moron

reply

And in that you showed that you need validation by your lame comments.

reply

Are you willing to apply that same logic to everyone else on here who posts about not liking it? How about the people who post about hating TDKR? I find your selective moral outrage quite hypocritical

reply

Point to where I need validation for my views on a film? You are in desperate need for validation. I am just glad this film smashes the prequels in data. If the prequels had better data you would be beating your chest making constant posts about how it is objectively worse than the prequels. You would cite the data constantly as you did with TDKR. Good thing data holds you in check from making lame claims.

Although you did claim Temple of Doom to be objectively better than Last Crusade and the data says otherwise. So no I guess I was wrong about it stopping you lol.

reply

So you aren’t going to apply that logic to anyone else??? Game set and match for Hippo

reply

So you have no retort for any of my points game set and match. Thanks for the win. Then again shouldn't be surprised you are a rat after all.

reply

A) Unless you are willing to apply that logic to the haters of TDKR you don't have a case. Since you are too chickensh!t to do that, I win
B) I had a retort and you didn't provide a sufficient rebuttle
C) I'm not a rat, you are the one who ratted
D) Even if "C" were true how is that relevant to this discussion?

reply

I already proved that you will not hold yourself to the same standard you hold others. Therefore I actually win so I go with option E. Game set and match for moviefanatic505.

I already beat you but I will be generous and dismantle your option choices.

A: I did prove that you do not hold people to the same standard which showcases your hypocrisy.
B: I retorted you simply did not comprehend it. I forgive you though for those lacking brain power I know it is hard for you. Do not worry it is your right to be wrong.
C: You did rat. You said you took a screen shot of my posts and sent it to the FBI. That is ratting.
D: It is relevant because it proves you do not hold yourself to the same standard you hold other people.

reply

A: We aren't talking about me, we are talking about you. Learn to stay on topic, you would never apply that logic to any hater of TDKR you are a dishonest hypocrite.
B: No I comprehended it just find, the truth is your argument is just a bunch of garbled nonsense
C: You told me to do something about it, I just did what you told me to. If anything you ratted yourself out by proxy
D: Again stay on topic dumbass. All you know how to do is deflect when you get boxed into a corner, well it's not going to work, I'm going to keep you in the corner and just continue punching your face to a bloody pulp.

reply

A: Yes we are you simply want to shift the attention away from you because you are a dishonest hypocrite.
B: Obviously you did not comprehend it fine, go back and look over it again.
C:Yep and your solution was ratting. Which makes us even thanks for that.
D:Never deflected once you just are too dense to realize when you have lost the match.

reply

I never cared much for the Star Wars franchise (except Empire, which I did enjoy), but I must admit that the Force awakens is quite good. I like the Last Jedi too. Despite all the hype I think this new set of movies delivers.

reply

A. Actually I'm preventing you from shifting the focus onto me
B. I comprehend it just fine, the stuff you say doesn't take an intellectual genius to understand, you aren't saying anything particularly thought provoking
C. I only did it because you said do something about it. You're a rat so I figured you wouldn't mind.
D. Yes you did try to deflect when you were boxed into a corner.

reply

A. No you aren't.
B. Oh I know which is why I find it funny you can't comprehend it.
C. So you admitted You are guilty of ratting.
D. Nope I'm simply too much for you. Defeating you is just so easy.

reply

These people are like:

The PT sucked. Sure it made lots of money, but that isn't a reflection of their quality as movies.

TFA made so much money, therefore it is the best movie ever ...

reply

Dude the movie SUCKS! Its a fu king fact that this movie was trash.

reply

please provide these facts? I like it, my friends liked it, critics liked it, general audience liked it, made 2 billion globally, these are facts

reply

I could not agree more. If Disney made sh!t Star Wars films whatever but what really boggles my mind was the blind fanboy praise for it, even Big Bang Theory said this film was good and I cannot understand it for the life of me. I am so glad the public seems to have woken up. I guess if you put the name "Star Wars" on anything fans will be in denial for a few years about how horrible it is.

reply

If you agree it is a fact prove it. I will wait. The amount of money it made, the critical acclaim, Oscar nominations as well as user acclaim is all fact. So please provide some facts.

reply

Where did I say it was an objective fact? Is putting words in my mouth the only thing you know how to do? If so that's really pathetic.

reply

You said you agreed with GotWood84. He said that it was a fact that this movie sucks. Since you agree with it I was hoping you could provide us with these facts. I will wait.

reply

I agreed with him that the movie sucked, not that it was an objective fact you moron.

reply

Your evidence for "bad movie" is "This message board"!

This board is a "deranged troll" magnet. Mom's basement instead of under a bridge.

reply

The critics go full retard sometimes.

The Force Awakens isn't even half the movie that Revenge of the Sith is.

reply

Translation people who disagree with me go full retard.

Critics were not the only ones who liked it fans did as well. The Force Awakens is higher rated than Revenge of the Sith among the general public. Personally I find all the prequels to be trash.

reply

I know people at least told themselves that they liked The Force Awakens when it first came out, but just as the OP is saying here a lot of fans have cooled on it over the last few years as they've reconsidered it. I actually have a friend like that myself.

The prequels, conversely, seem to be gaining speed as time goes on. It's the opposite trend: People who once talked shit on them are starting to conclude there's more there than they originally gave credit for.

In fact, there was an entire documentary made in defense of the prequels just a couple of years ago:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGyv85zitYg

reply

Opinions on films can change overtime. Thing is you do not speak for everyone. Are there people who cool off on a movie as time goes by sure. Ask yourself this though is it possible some people just enjoyed the film where as you didn't? I find the whole oh the critics went retard to be a lame way of thinking. It translates into wah they liked something I didn't. Or vice verse. My favorite excuse is Disney paid the critics to give it good reviews.

Really if that is the case I guess Disney forgot to send the check for the following films. Solo a Star Wars story, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, and A wrinkle in Time.

I get why people did not like this movie, but do not project and belittle those who enjoy it. Someone is not ignorant simply because they like something that you dislike. Also yeah before referencing the op might want to check his history he is a known idiot among imdb.

reply

I think if people like The Force Awakens, then that is well and good. I never said others have to share my opinion. But my opinion is indeed that it's a dull film and that it did not get the Disney era of the SW universe off on a good foot.

It mostly fails on a writing level, as many of JJ's films do. I don't hate JJ Abrams--he is, at least, an excellent technician--but for someone who has made no great films, it's a little baffling as to how he's been able to gain so much notoriety and power as a filmmaker. The closest he's come to making a genuinely great film is Super 8, and even that movie is known for faltering in the third act.

But hey, I am rooting for the guy with Episode IX. I have to hope to that he will be able to clean up Rian Johnson's mess and finally get the Disney SW films on track. I guess we'll see what happens.

reply

I am fine with that but when you say the critics went full on retard it implies that they need to agree with you in order to be smart. Disagreeing is fine but insulting them because they did not agree with your assessment is juvenile and lame. I disagree that it is a dull film. Do I think it has problems sure but the thing is even on a basic technical level TFA is far above the prequels. The fact that practical effects and actual puppets were brought back is amazing.

That was a gigantic pitfall the prequels fell into was way too much reliance on cgi. I understand how it fell into that trap it was new at the time and it made many things easier to do. I have no issue with cgi but it should be used as a tool to enhance not replace everything. Use it sparingly and when necessary.

See that is just it I did not dislike Last Jedi either. Again not flawless but visually it is quite stunning. Here is the thing that I appreciate about Episode 7 and 8. Even though the stories are not perfectly sound at least we do not have horrific acting and awkward dialogue like in the prequels. Seriously good grief were Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman dreadful in those films. I do not place the blame entirely on them part of it is the awkward dialogue and bad direction. Lucas has never been good at directing actors.

reply

Obviously people can like whatever they like.

My biggest issue with critical praise for The Force Awakens is that it rewards Disney for making what is (in my opinion) a poor Star Wars sequel, and also for sending the franchise into a weird direction in which the films were as much a political megaphone for Disney as they were pieces of entertainment. It's a form of encouragement that says, "Hey, give us more movies just like this one!"

It also opened the way for The Last Jedi. I actually enjoyed The Last Jedi the first time I saw it. But then the more I thought about it, and the more I discussed it with others, the more I realized that not only is it poorly written on a creative level but it's also intensely disrespectful to long-time fans of franchise and the films that came before it.

Regarding the prequels, I'll agree that Hayden and Natalie did not give their best performances, but I've come to regard this as part of the charm of those films. I also came to look at AOTC's performances a little differently after understanding Lucas's approach:

https://geekydaddycom.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/george-lucas.jpg?w=1140

As for the CGI in the prequels, yeah, there's a lot of it. Lucas had a new toy and he wanted to play with it. With that said, there are a lot of practical effects in the prequels, more than most people seem to realize.

reply

Yes Revenge of the Sith was actually a really good film and I would argue that it's better than Return of the Jedi.

The Force Awakens isn't even as good as the dogsh!t I accidentally stepped in.

reply

I hate Rey, I hate Finn, I hate Snoke, I hate Emo Vader, I hate everything about The Force Awakens.

reply

I like Kylo Ren and think he's a pretty good character and villain.

I more or less agree on the rest though. Rey could've been a good character if they hadn't Mary Sue'd her. Finn is whatever. Snoke is boring.

reply

Rey is infuriating on all levels, from be able to fix the falcon before Han to the don’t hold my hand scene. I get it, women can be tough too, I don’t need that message rammed down my throat every five minutes. Rey is the definition of a Mary Sue.

ROTS is a great film, especially the second half and the confrontation between Vader and obi wan. The mustafar fight was epic

reply

ROTS is actually my favorite Star Wars film. I'm not crazy about all the General Grievous stuff, but as a whole I think it's the most entertaining entry in the entire canon.

reply

Hello there!

reply

Interesting because if we look at objective data. The Force Awakens has a higher imdb, RT, and MC rating than any of the prequels do.

Those numbers are based in the hyped original scores. Check last reviews in imdb. Average score is not even 5.

The movie is aging fast and bad.

reply

The film used to be firmly planted in the IMDb Top 250 #150-170 range with an 8.2 rating for about a year or so. Since then, it's steadily declined to a 7.8 and dropping. It's true that hype usually places a movie in the IMDb Top 250 for a few weeks before it averages out and falls away, but Episode 7 was there for over a year. It didn't drop out until early 2018, according to statistics. This means that people still thought the movie was great for sometime afterward until newer movies began showing people how flat and lifeless it actually was.

reply

It's not that bad. It had it's moments.

I was really disappointed in Episode 8 though. They continued the trend of sort of rehashing the plot of the original trilogy.

reply

It’s kind of a mixed bag for me which is worse. The acting in TFA was really really bad yet the plot made some sense despite it being a complete rehash of A New Hope. The Last Jedi on the other hand had better acting and music (although Roses theme seems to be ripped off from My Girl) but the plot was complete and total garbage.

reply

I enjoyed The Last Jedi a ton the first time I saw it, but as time went on and I thought more about it the more I realized it had a ton of problems. Eventually I arrived at the point where a lot of other fans are at: Concluding that the film was a colossal mistake.

reply

The trajectory of the sequel trilogy is mirroring the prequels.

I remember when Phantom Menace came out. Half the fans loved it and half the fans hated it. Critics were positive and the movie made more than any other Star Wars movie since A New Hope. Gradually, the hype wore off and people realized it really was as bad as the negative half were saying.

The next movie made a lot of money but received a ton of criticism for the silly subplots and stilted dialogue. There were some who still had faith in the trilogy, though.

Episode 9 will probably make money, just as episode 3 did, but I don’t see a lot of love for it. It might redeem the trilogy somewhat but I doubt it will end on much of a high note.

reply

I fully admit that the prequels were more than a signification step down from the OT (although ROTS was really good) but they at least had direction and were obviously building up towards something, I can’t say the same for the sequel trilogy

reply

Despite the prequels not being as good as the original Trilogy, at least Lucas was in charge of the story-telling for Eps 1-3. I have no faith in Episodes 7 and 8 at all.

reply

Unpopular opinion incoming: The prequels are better than the original trilogy.

reply

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!

reply

Also, as bad as the prequels were, there are still a lot of iconic moments and characters. People love Darth Maul to the point where he almost rivals Vader and Fett for the top Star Wars villain spot. Mace Windu is another memorable character even if people remember him simply for being played by Samuel L Jackson. Then you have everything involved in the Clone Wars which is important enough to the franchise that it has spawned a few cartoons. Even the stuff people make fun of has turned into memorable memes. Anakin's monologue about sand or Obi-Wan mentioning the high ground is still meme worthy, even if it is people mostly taking the piss. It shows that even when the prequels suck, people remember them.

What iconic heroes or villains do the sequels have? People who like Rey admit they like her for being a female lead in a Star Wars movie but they don't seem to care about the character. The rest of the cast is pretty much forgotten about. As for villains, Kylo is often mocked and while there were some who were interested in Snoke's backstory, it no longer matters as he was killed off in the second flick before he could get interesting. As for memes, the Storm Trooper who shouted "Traitor" was a thing for abut a week after Force Awakens but it's been forgotten about since that time. This trilogy has not cemented itself in the franchise.

reply

Well done sir.

reply

While I have mostly disliked the Disney SW films (the lone exception being Rogue One, which is pretty good), I do think people are sometimes a little harder on Kylo Ren than they should be. I enjoy his character and think he's a bright spot in an otherwise dim series of films.

Also, give him his fucking mask back!

reply

His very first scene was badass but from that point forward, he seems to be constantly outgunned, outsmarted, overpowered, and generally ineffective. I am not intimidated by him and it seems none of the other characters are, either.

reply

The best way to put it, I think, is to say that he's been mistreated by the writers.

I'd love to see him bitch slap Rey.

reply

I thought the prequel trilogy got progressively better as it went along. Attack of the Clones was an improvement over Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith was an improvement over AOTC.

Those films aren't perfect, but I enjoy them and I think they're much better than they're usually given credit for. Lucas was going after something big there, a truly epic story.

reply

Sorry but I found Attack of the Clones to be the worst in the prequel trilogy. The Phantom Menace as lame as it was at least had a legitimately cool Lightsaber fight sequence at the end. The only thing Attack of the Clones improved on was the absence of Jar Jar Binks. Attack of the Clones had a painful performance from Hayden Christensen and a painful performance from Natalie Portman as well. Him and Natalie Portman had awful chemistry. There is no fun lightsaber duel to save this one it is just completely dull from start to finish. I seriously did not understand what happened to Anakin.

He went from this boy scout little boy in Phantom Menace into this whiny brat in Attack of the Clones. The character was not likable at all. Therefore because of this his fall to the dark side does not bring that dramatic character arc it is trying to convey. Tragic characters that we are supposed to feel sad fall to the dark side have to have a tiny bit of redeemable traits. Anakin had none.

reply

I always liked the light saber duels with Count Dooku at the end.

reply

Attack of the Clones is the best prequel.

reply

Not even close.

reply

True. It's the best prequel by far.

reply

I killed them ALL, the women AND the children! They are like ANIMALS, I HATE THEM!!!! >:@@@

reply

Settle down, Elliot Rodger....

reply

The Phantom Menace has some good things going for it, but the plot descends into incomprehensibility at times, Jar Jar sucks, and Anakin somehow piloting an aircraft to victory with no training in the final act is just silly. With all that said, I don't hate the film.

I can understand why some people don't like AOTC, but if you really examine the film thematically there's a lot of interesting stuff going on there, in particular Lucas's allusions to the biblical story of the Garden of Eden as well as allusions to medieval tales of knightly courtship.

I will agree that Anakin is a bit of a brat, but I can accept it as the character's arc. He becomes arrogant and self-centered. It's just another way that he breaks from the tradition of the Jedi, who are supposed to be about a life of service to others.

Overall, I'd probably say that AOTC is the most misunderstood entry in the whole franchise.

reply

The Phantom Menace while a bad film is at least entertaining. The lightsaber duel is fun.

I hate AOTC because it is absolutely dull. Yes the plot is deeper and more sound and yes I did get the symbolism but guess what the movie still sucks. You still get horrific dialogue, stilted awful acting as well no chemistry among the cast. I honestly hate Hayden Christensen's Anakin worse than Jar Jar binks. Why simple who cares about Jar Jar, this was supposed to be a young Darth Vader. You know the guy everyone came to see.

So you have to sit through a painful awkward romance between actors who have no chemistry at all. There is no scene in which I want to revisit in this film. I even think the lightsaber duel in the end is lame. Yoda bouncing around I found lame and undermined his character, the choreography was nowhere near as good this time.

Anakin being an unlikable crybaby was terrible. We all know he is destined to be the bad guy, in the meantime why don't you I don't know make us actually like him? Let me ask this who likes a whiny crybaby? Answer no one! In order for us to care about his fall he has to have a redeemable quality.

There is nothing wrong with showing vulnerability or character flaws but we also needed to see strength and really feel like this was a young Vader. Lines such as it's not fair are not something Vader would say. You want an example of the right way to do this character watch X-men First Class. Michael Fassbender's Magneto is an example of how to do a character like Anakin right. Was he vulnerable yep but still strong and believable as a young version of this character.

reply

Overall, I'd probably say that AOTC is the most misunderstood entry in the whole franchise.
Not only is it the best prequel, it's better than any of the Disney Star Wars films so far....

reply

It's Episode I all over again.

reply

EP1 has its faults, but at least its a real Star Wars movie.

reply

Amen to that! I still have good memories from when that came out.

reply

I agree Episodes I and II at least felt like Star Wars. VII and VIII feel like really, really bad fan fiction.

reply

I thought I was watching a fanfic movie in some of the scenes.

reply

I thought so after seeing "The Last Jedi," and after being a member of Fanfiction.net for a few years, I know exactly what you mean!

reply

I've only seen TFA once the night it opened, but the scene when Kylo starts doing the interrogation round before Rey, something was really off about it and it sucked me completely out of the movie until Leia shows up later on.

reply

Its curious that it has virtually no rewatchability factor at all.. maybe the solo death scene but that's kind of depressing anyway

reply

I saw it for the pure garbage that it was from day one and many people who originally gave it a pass eventually realized it was crap. That being said there were and still are people who simply chose to stay in denial about TFA , blaming TLJ & Rian Johnson for failing to retroactively salvage the mess left behind by Jar Jar Abram's woefully uninspired, incoherent hack job that is TFA.

reply

Wow I see old habits die hard. So UltimateHippo still carrying on with this Disney Star Wars hate agenda huh? Pathetic!
