Shouldn't they at least wait 10 years after the most recent movie?
Wont happen....
Depp is the only thing keeping this franchise going and bringing in box office....
A Reboot would probably fail to top 100 Million domestically and 500 Million WW....
IMO They come to their senses, and just greenlight another sequel with a much lower budget....
The days of The Pirates movies making 900 Million + is over....but if they keep Depp, Theres no reason why they couldnt push out 2 or 3 more sequels that gross 600 to 700 Million WW....
The key here is getting Budgets down....They got to figure out how to make Pirate movies for 130 to 150 M ....
If they decide to Reboot, They KILL the franchise...It will be one and done....IMO these films can not survive without Depp's Sparrow...
Or maybe they find a way to reboot with Depp's Sparrow....but I dont think many would consider that a reboot...
I just dont see any way once this gets to the Top of Disney, Whomever has the final say, they let this happen....Theres a reason They Pay Depp Near 50 Million + for each of these movies, They know They depend on him...
Maybe the whole Depp controversy is partly the reason they are rebooting..?
shareThey're in a tough spot really. They just need to let the franchise rest at least a decade, as someone else suggested. Irritating how we're so quick to dig things up again nowadays. I think the shortest gap for a TV revival/reboot was American Idol, less than a year, lmao. They're so desperate to wring every dollar from the Caribbean though. But right now I feel like the franchise can't survive with him, because of the controversy surrounding Depp at the moment, and the general over-saturation of the franchise, including people growing tired of Depp's tendency to only play zany caricatures anymore. However, because of the legacy of the current franchise, and the Jack Sparrow character, they can't really survive without him either. Maybe wait ten or twenty years, then do a return where Sparrow can be a mentor, and maybe not quite the anchor of the story, and maybe be just a tad tempered down.
shareBy my understanding, Jack won't be in the next movie. I'm curious if they will manage to make the movie magical and captivating without his presence, since he has been the constant in the series.
shareAt least as definitive of a time as any to "jump ship" from watching the series, because I don't intend on getting suckered into another.
But hey, thanks Disney, for #5's post-credits cliffhanger that's clearly going nowhere.
Stupid idea.
Yes, Depp is a liability, his contract fees are astronomical, and so are the delays he costs through not showing up for work, not to mention what it'd cost to insure him for a long shoot.
But he IS the franchise! It's all about Jack Sparrow and the actor who plays him, the rest of the characters are just there for him to play off of. Disney should thank their lucky stars it was so profitable, and come up with some fucking new material.
All that. I think this is Disney just playing the safe card of covering their bases. They probably have no faith in a Sparrow-less POTC film but you have to at least try and be sure.
shareThese movies cost hundreds of millions of dollars, this isn't something where you just give it a go for the hell of it.
Better to spend the money on something that has at least a chance of being good!
My thoughts too. Unless this reboot is totally going in a different direction, it's going to remain in the shadow of the existing franchise, which started out as a lightning in a bottle in the first place.

Yes, it's called 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Flogging A Dead Horse'
shareI don't want to see it. I liked the first and 4th movie and refused to see the 5th one.
