Is this the last grownup movie with messed up tie-ins for kids?

If you've watched Starship Troopers you know that its definitely NOT appropriate for kids. And yet it had toys (not action figures for adult nerds, but toys) and a CG cartoon, with none of the satire and commentary, that were clearly marketed toward kids lol. That's pretty messed up.

I know this practice wasn't uncommon in the 80s. Rambo also had kiddies toys and a Saturday morning cartoon. Geez, Robocop as well, and that movie is WILDLY inappropriate for kids. Terminator had similar tie ins, including video games.

I think they continued to make Aliens vs Predator toys and games after this movie. No cartoons though.

Speaking of, both Conan and Highlander had cartoons in the 90s. Now, Conan’s stories were adapted into comics in the 70s which were mostly okay for children and his second movie was PG so there was some precedent there. Highlander on the other hand, was never kid friendly and revolved around dudes decapitating each other. The love action TV show was tamed down for censors but still involved heads being chopped off. So weird that they decided to make a cartoon out of it.

The AvP games are at rated M so not for kids.

reply

The first games were for the SNES, Game Boy, Jaguar, and there was one arcade that were released in the 90s and weren’t MA.

reply

No, we didn't have those ratings back then. Also, not very violent in comparison.

reply

That’s kinda the point of this thread and why I brought it up. Those games were kid-friendly as were the toys at the time.

reply

It defenitley wasnt for kids also its the aesthetic of the time I think this Verhevens best film i also I'm partial to this film it wasn't a western that was filmed in my state it was a Sci-Fi didn't mind the satire as well its not a cartoon STFU

reply

You really think it was aimed at kids? I'd say the target audience is college-aged adults.

reply

i meant wasnt

reply

Ummmm the film was rated R and has multiple nude scenes, I don’t think it was intended for kids.

reply

I watched this for the first time when I was a kid at a birthday party, maybe 9 or 10 yrs old

reply

And how was it when you saw it back then? I imagine the first hour is mostly boring for someone that young.

reply

We really liked it... It was an evening movie at a friends farm after the outside fun ended. This was the first movie I remember watching with boobies... The second movie we watched that night was children under the stairs, it was a bit scary for me at that age... but i powered through and i still dislike that movie - probably because i watched it too young..

I remember a couple years later when they had an Austin Powers doll that said do I make you horny baby and parents rightly went berserk over it lol.

reply

When my niece was a toddler, she had a Terminator doll that said quotes from T2. She ran around yelling, "hasta la vista, baby!" I don't remember all of the quotes, but she loved that little Terminator. It even had half its face missing with the metal skull underneath and the red eye.

My biggest gripe here is....
where the fuck are the Basic Instinct toys?

Robocop had them. ST had them. Why skip over one of Verhoeven's biggest hits?
I'd buy that for a dollar!

reply

That's like saying Nomi from Showgirls needs an action figure.🤣

reply

Totally not.
But also good idea, a slutty Barbie, as if Barbie was not slutty enough.

reply

No wait.... blue1981 is on to something. First of all, yes - if Verhoeven's movies are going to get toys... do it right.

You need a slutty blonde and Kyle McLachlan doll to fuck in the water where she whips her head to and fro and screams like a goddamn banshee. Then, you need a hairy-bushed Sharon Stone along with Jeanne Tripplehorn that comes with ample C-cup knobs.

We can make a FORTUNE!

reply

Hey I'm all for it.
My top pick is the action figure of Newman interrogating Catherine, that sweats like a pig when you press the button on his back.

reply

Ahahah, thanks for the laugh bozo.
That is a great figurine!

But can she cross her legs?
Or it's probably more effective if she cannot, she's even more frustrating.

reply

It's amusing that every time a new, gritty and violent Batman film comes out in the cinemas, the department stores are flooded with kids' tie-in toys for the movie.

reply

None of them are rated R yet which would be amazing.

reply

It's misleading because the TITLE is aimed at kids, it sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon, but the movie is aimed at the young adult/late teen.
