Not a redeemable moment in this turkey of a movie if you ask me. Jeff Bridges has never been more wooden and the plot is non-existent. Thank God Mr Carpenter stayed away from the romance genre after this because it would have ruined his career. Long story short....avoid this at all costs.

I have no problem with anyone not liking or even hating a movie I love (Starman is on my fav list), but I don't understand why people don't actually express an opinion as much as speak in absolutes as if they're irrefutable.
Simply preface any criticism with "in my opinion" and no one would have a problem with that.

Starman is one of my favorite Carpenter movies, and its one of his most underrated, its an amazing love story with alot of touching beautiful scenes in it. I mean how can you watch the deer scene and not get choked up and think its a beautiful scene? Or the line Starman says "You are at your best when things are worst" talking about human beings.
Thats another thing it had great dialogue like that, very powerful meaningful dialogue. And Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen had amazing chemistry together, i really felt for her at the end when he had to leave her and go home.
For anyone to say this is Carpenter's worst movie they must not have seen all of Carpenter's movies.
Probably one of his most underrated, I think some don't watch it cause it's such a non Carpenter type film. No Action or Horror, it's a story about grief and love. Definitely agree Ghost of Mars (just a retread on Assault on Precinct 13 but on Mars) and The Ward are his worse films, I'd also throw Memoirs of an Invisible Man on that list.
Bridges and Allen are great. It wouldn't grace my top 5 Carpenter film list, The Thing, Halloween, Escape From New York, They Live and Big Trouble In Little China are better films imo. But I enjoy it and it's Carpenter's most heartfelt film.

shareI just watched it for the first time. It's a wonderful movie. I would say Carpenter's best. So far, at least. I kept thinking as the movie progressed Bridges and Allen are giving Oscar worthy performances in this SF movie. After I was done I was curious to see if it got any Oscar recognition and was pleasantly surprised to see Bridges was nominated for Best Actor. I still cannot believe it. I knew they had nominated Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, which was a great surprise, too, but I had no idea Bridges was nominated for this film. More than deserved. I think Karen Allen was just as good and should have been nominated. It's a relatively simple story, beautifully told, and I have to say masterfully directed by John Carpenter. The only flaws for me were some dated effects shots, which did not bother me in the least. I loved watching this film and the only reason I even bought it was because Walmart had the Shout Factory blu ray so reasonably priced. A great film. I wish I had watched it sooner.
