Maher's starting to sound like Tucker Carlson

I don't disagree with Maher that the woke movement has gone off the rails. But so has he. Claiming that pedophilia is "rampant"? That the CDC has known for ages that masks are ineffective against Covid transmission? C'mon Bill - where is this crap coming from? He's not just losing credibility with his 180-degree switch- he's becoming the worst thing a comic can become: boring.

reply

The reasonable Maher from the 90s is coming back since President Trump is no longer in the White House.

reply

Yeah I have not figured out where he really stands. I need to go back and read this board from the beginning. I stopped paying attention to him years ago when it was obvious he was a liberal whack-job, but I caught him on HBO in the hotel the other day, and he seemed surprisingly conservative. (Read between the lines: No way am I going to ever PAY for HBO).

Maybe like the comment below, his strategy is just to "oppose" mainstream thinking, or oppose the party in power (i.e. White House).

Or is it possible he's trying to fill part of the void that Rush Limbaugh left?

reply

I think liberals from the 80s were still sane Americans in most respects. There was still a level of intelligence and common sense.

And he's a little befuddled about the whole cancel culture, woke/trans nonsense!

And he's right about that.

Its insanity. And it needs to stop.

Anyone who spouts woke nonsense needs to be shut down, immediately, and humiliated beyond all belief. No more Mr Nice Guy.

reply

Bill has always seen the tide before it comes in. The woke and lefty movement that has wrecked this country over the last decade is coming to an end, and he knows it. Smart business play by him.

reply

I hope you're right. Being sane in Woke World is like trying to hold your breath underwater without drowning.

reply

It's not hard to see his angles. It all depends on what affects he and his brethren personally, and also, who's in The White House. If comedians are taking a beating, and Democrats hold power, he becomes a libertarian again. If comedians are doing fine, weed is under attack, and Republicans hold power, he's a liberal. His brand is to oppose, with a few personal issues thrown in.

reply

Woke coming to an end? lol it is stronger than ever.

reply

I've been around long enough to see the pattern. We are in a constant teetertotter, and it's about to tip back to conservatives. The left is all about appealing to special interest groups, but when you try to appeal to everyone, nobody is special. We are see more and more the left eating itself because they set unrealistic rules that they don't truly believe in themselves. Nothing lasts forever.

reply

Provide specific examples where Bill Maher says exactly the same thing Tucker Carlson has said.

reply

I think a lot of people are skeptical about whether the CDC knew that cloth masks didn't help much when it came to Covid. It's not a right wing extremist view.

reply

Are they the same "many, many people" Trump likes to cite?

And if it is in fact true, I'm curious about the evidence of it - & that pedophilia is "rampant".

reply

I can't find any scientific polls asking that specific question. I come across plenty of people online who aren't Tucker Carlson loving right wing extremists who also question that among other things we've been told by government officials like Fauci. I also know some in the real world, so that opinion is just based on personal experience.

edit: It was well known that cloth masks are pretty porous before the start of the pandemic so I find it hard to believe the CDC didn't figure out that it didn't do much to limit the spread of the Corona virus. I don't think questioning this makes you some kind of alt-right Tucker Carlson fan.

reply

I hate the way Trump used to say "many many people", and "it's going to be great, it really is". He has the vocabulary of a 2nd grader. I voted for the guy because of his politics (love the politics, hate the messenger), and because I couldn't stand Hillary and Biden.

But he was, and continues to be and sound like, a fucking idiot.

reply

Did you watch Biden talking about the “Russian kleptocracy?” It was pretty embarrassing to be an American watching that performance. We’ve gone from bad to much worse.

reply

Sometimes worse yes I agree. But overall, even though I can’t stand them, Bill Clinton, Obama and Biden generally all sound more PRESIDENTAL than Trump.

reply

I was watching videos of Kennedy addressing the American people in the Cuban Missile Crisis and Eisenhower addressing them on calling in the Army to enforce school integration in Little Rock. It’s just night & day different presidential leadership. We’ve gone backwards in recent years and we deserve so much better.

reply

As much as I can't stand them, I do think Clinton and Obama were both very good speakers. Obama needed to stop sounding so condescending by starting so many thoughts with "LOOK.....". It's akin to pointing your finger at someone and saying "You shut the fuck up because I'm right and you're wrong".

I've seen other speakers emulate this "LOOK" prefix, and I hate it.

reply

That's because the mainstream Left is going farther and farther away from what it used to and should be.

reply

papamihel: and you think the right is going - where?

reply

The right has consistently moved towards the center, while the left keeps going left. Are you really blind to that?

reply

LOL! SO Jan 6 is the right moving to the center?

reply

January 6th proves my point more than it doesn't. On a relative scale, it was very few people. There were almost no violent encounters, and minimal property damage. Most of the people that actually went inside were literally just spectators. While I don't agree with it, It was a very mild event in all reality.
In stark contrast, the Seattle riots lasted almost a month. It was a city held hostage and had 59 injured police officers, resulted in 10s of millions of dollars in damage, had numerous murders as a result and countless assaults and reports of rape. This exact thing also happened in Portland, but lasted much longer.
So yes, when you compare the actions of members in two different political parties in similar situations, you can see the glaring differences.

reply

Well said.

reply

You think an unprecedented attempt to violently overturn a legitimate presidential election, by a rioting mob screaming "Hang Pence", and that resulted in the deaths of 5 Capitol police, "was a very mild event"? Your logic is perverted, to put it mildly.

reply

Now you're just being ridiculous and you know it. It's very telling that you completely ignored 90% of my reply.

reply

And you ignored 100% of mine. You're a hopeless ideologue. Not wasting any more time on you. Buh-bye!

reply

You don't want to continue simply because I showed that you were wrong. Typical of the left.

reply

Can you pinpoint how many were killed in the riot?

reply

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Republican, but the ONE THING that distinguishes Jan 6 from everything else:

IT WAS THE FUCKING US CAPITOL BUILDING.

reply

Pedophilia is rampant among the left. They're trying to legitimize it but until then, the Biden regime is helping to cover it up. You want proof? Just look at the Epstein situation. The government has thousands of hours of footage, CDs, hard drives etc showing exactly who is involved but how many people have been arrested? Hmmmm. Strange isn't it.

reply

He's probably trying to increase his fan-base.

Bill M. has always been a Liberal (and proud of it). He has always viewed Liberals as the cool, laid-back, pot-smoking partiers....the young, good-looking people. The forward-thinkers. And conversely, he has historically positioned the Conservatives as old, white, up-tight nerds. In short, his views on the 2 parties are dated and have passed him by. In fact, the 2 parties have come so close to full-circle, they’ve practically flip-flopped.

I’m an Independent, and don’t have much respect for (or give much credibility to) people who fall lock-step into group-think on either “side”. I prefer to be an objective, free-thinker...and judge each issue on its own merits. I wish more people could be like this, instead of speaking in absolutes....praising everything one party does 100%, and bashing the other, 100%.

Even Trump did some very good, very important things—effective things. When people just 100% hate on him and are unable to acknowledge ANYTHING positive he has done...they lose all credibility with me. It’s just not a very intelligent world-view. CNN comes to mind. Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers come to mind. Both are douchebags who think they speak for the masses and are champions of the cause....when really they’re probably just pissing off more than half the people who still watch late-night talk shows.

I like Bill M. (even though I disagree with his views often, including his view that Liberals are the cool kids), because he has the courage of his convictions...the courage to call things out that most people are afraid to say. We need people like him, Rogan, Chappell, Carrolla, Chris Rock, etc....to call out cancel culture and woke bs.

BTW...I think the effectiveness of masks is more common sense. It’s not to protect the wearer from stuff getting ingested. It’s to cut down on the amount of droplets that spray out into the air when the wearer talks, caughs or sneezes. It creates a barrier. Just common sense. It’s not 100% effective, but I get it.

This ☝🏻

Reasonable assessment, Ripken.

I do consider group-think to be a problem among both parties but I would say its worse among the democrats of today. I can still have a decent conversation with most conservatives but libs have become totally intolerant of other thoughts and opinions on politics. Which actually doesn't make them "liberals" at all but more like a group of quasi left wing fascists.

There is a huge difference between a 70s and 80s liberal to a 2022 liberal.

To a certain extent, the cons have become conspiracy nutters, which I can handle in most situations, sure, it can be annoying but I would take the conspiracy nutters over people that have embraced cancel culture, anti-free speech doctrine, and make excuses for riots and high crime.

It's cultist in many ways but when you make "social justice" your religion this is what we can expect. It does feel kind of like a party switch, sometimes I refer to republicans as the "liberals of today" which I'm sure this would trigger most lefties.

reply

Great points, stickman.
There's so much hypocrisy out there right now, it's rather shocking. For example, the people who harp on the January 6th attack on the capitol (by a bunch of redneck assholes)......but conveniently neglect to mention the BLM riots all over the country in which thousands of a-hole opportunists decide to loot and burn down businesses and commit all sorts of crimes in the name of "peaceful protests".

Hypocrital dickheads.

reply

Ripkens: You are very well-spoken and I agree with everything you've written above. Well done, friend.

reply

It also cuts down on the viral load. It may not stop you from getting sick, but it could greatly affect the speed and severity of the illness.

reply

Maher is a decent guy but he’s a pot-head with extreme Trump Derangement Syndrome. Fortunately he’s able to see how batshit insane the Left has gone and calls it out, and I suspect his new podcast is a way to gradually ease himself away from his TV show, which forces him to be pro Democrat despite his heart telling him it’s time to switch parties. He knows he’ll get cancelled if he stops blowing the Dems so he’s preparing a safety cushion for when that day comes.

If he’s turning into Tucker Carlson that’s a good thing, it means he’s getting red-pilled.
