I'm talking about bankable stars. That seems to be a thing of the past & we're now in the Era of franchises.
Is he the only star that can actually still sell/headline a movie nowadays? I honestly can't think of another actor/actresses currently that can actually get butts in seats just cause they're in something.
Even the Marvel & DC stars aren't that bankable outside of their franchises

Movies have definitely morphed into huge cartoonish spectacles, they certainly make the big bucks.
What amazes me is dozens of once A Listers still make movies, but NOBODY sees them. I've seen the stats of many movies with 25-50 million dollar budgets that make next to ZERO. Can you imagine all that money invested that goes down the drain? I don't think this is talked about very much.
Tom is one of the last of the great movie stars. Sly, Arnie and Bruce have fallen out. Brad Pitt prefers not to be a leading man anymore. Even the fantastic Mel Gibson has lost a lot of cache.
Sean Connery did it longer than most.
Tom….is definitely on the Mt. Rushmore.
Back in the day, God I sound old, like even as recently as the early 2000s, when A-Listers starred in the kinda bombs (box office not quality) you mentioned, they'd stop being bankable.
No studio would cast them in a lead role
Do good critical reviews count for something? I'm genuinely wondering. Cause I've seen a lot of well received films recently that as you said, no one saw but box office is rarely brought up
I think it's mostly the smartphone, there's so much time spent interacting with these stupid devices they're not going to hear about a non tent-pole movie that has an above average review.
I remember back in the day very vividly..for decades going to the movies was a big deal. Often we'd see TV ads of upcoming movies, at the very least on Thursday or Friday we'd get excited about the weekend. Not just because we'd be off from work or school but there was always a new movie release. Friday night starts to roll around, we'd just grab the entertainment section of the newspaper and pick a movie to go see. Most often the movie was at least good to very good. We'd spend $3-$5 on the ticket price, gas was cheap, maybe even splurge a few bucks on popcorn/licorice. It didn't hurt the wallet or pocketbook and we'd have something to talk about to our friends the whole next week.
If it's not a buzzworthy release or a popular release on streaming, no one bothers with it
I myself rarely go to the cinemas anymore. I make exceptions of course. Especially when a film "has to be experienced" on the big screen.
My favorite "big screen movies" so far this year are, Everything everywhere all at once & Top Gun Maverick. I didn't even bother with the Marvel flicks, even though I usually enjoy them
Both the Doctor Strange & Thor sequels looked meh to me. And Strange definitely was.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is probably the only other actor that still has star-power. His movies have done well, he elevated the Fast and Furious movies to new heights financially speaking, and now he’s gonna be in a DC comics movie as a fan-favorite character which I expect will make $1 billion.

Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't really a good actor. But he chose his roles very carefully & worked with some really talented filmmakers.
In my opinion, most of Dwayne's projects (Especially in the action genre) have been super forgetable

The Batista Guy actually has a much better film C.V as the Rock and i could see him more being an Arnie type over The Rock

Batista is honestly a pretty solid actor. Legit better than The Rock (in terms of acting, that is)
I was really impressed with his small role in Blade Runner 2049.
And you're absolutely right, his filmography is much more diverse than that of Dwayne's. He doesn't play the same character over & over again. Except Drax of course.
100 percent i think he was probably cast as the tough henchman type but has shown he's got a bit more about him, he was good in bond as well, again he doesn't say much but he has a real presence and is a bit more menacing.
Loved the Rock in WWE but as an actor he's a bit Corny for me i would never watch a film with him in it
Also, I feel like he doesn't have The Rock's ego. Cause he doesn't mind getting beat up or even killed off in the roles he plays.
Dwayne on the other hand has to be invincible, no matter which role he plays nowadays.
Tom Hanks, Duane Johnson. That's about all I can think of.

shareSort of. The reason people come out to see Cruise is because he’s nearly always in good films, and he usually does his own stunts. If he’s in crap like The Mummy nobody shows up.
Bottom line is you know if Tom Cruise is in a film it’s almost certainly going to be really entertaining and worth paying to see, and that particularly stands out in this day and age where Hollywood just churns out lazy garbage crammed with tedious woke messaging.
