How come girls / women don't seem to be interested

... In gaming? I mean, generally speaking. Even at 40 I feel like this is something I will enjoy and be fascinated with forever!

reply

Beats the hell out of me too, but it's the way it's been forever now.

Hell, the creator of friggin' Pac-Man, Toru Iwatani, is on the record saying his basic idea for that game was to make something that would appeal to male and female audiences alike... and I don't think I've ever come across a single female Pac-Man fan even though it has existed for two years longer than me.

reply

A tomboy friend of mine hated all the variations of Pac Man, she always wanted to play shoot ‘em up games…

I always preferred Ms. Pac Man. The original just had the same screen over and over each round; Ms. Pac Man switched it up each stage. Also, the arcade I went to as a kid possessed a Ms Pac Man that had a ZOOM button that could be used to speed up the character, leaving Pinky and his punk-ass ghost friends in the dust….good times…

Galaga, Dig Dug and the Star Wars game were cool too….

reply

The history of those sequel Pac-Man games is interesting. The Japanese company that created Pac-Man, Namco, sold the North American distribution rights to Midway. But then Midway created those sequels without Namco’s permission.

reply

I did not know that and that is interesting. It makes sense now that I think back; the graphics and design improved over time and I just assumed it was due to technical advancement. So it was Midway that gave all the variations?: IIRC, there was a Jr. Pac Man, Professor Pac Man and others. But I thought Namco produced more versions of the game until the home console makers got hold…as you stated, interesting…

Cheers…

Here is a good video about it:

I just finished playing PAC-MAN and MS. PACMAN earlier.. I own a Video Arcade Machine with 3000 Games built in, all from the 80's and 90's right down to ASTEROIDS, ASTEROIDS DELUXE, JOUST, SEGA'S OUTRUN, GALAGA, GALAXIAN AND EVERY STREET FIGHTER & MORTAL KOMBAT Game you can think of, I own it

reply

Dragon Slayer?

reply

Yes

reply

You DO have them all.

reply

All of them!! I own all of the "VS" Games including STRRET FIGHTER vs MORTAL KOMBAT and also all of the TETRIS games, Championship Editions and whatnot.. I played GALAGA earlier, than ALIENS

reply

Damn, I knew that machine existed but I try not to think of it. I don’t need another thing killing the little spare time I have. Sounds too fun. I liked Joust but I wasn’t very good, all my friends defeated me.

But damn that’d be nice for the game room….

reply

It was well worth the $1200.00 I paid for it.. It's a warehouse with wall to wall arcade machines and pinball machines as well

reply

There was an old arcade game with old west shooting. At times, when you hit someone, the game voice would say, "LUCKY!"

Do you have that game and know its name? Only some arcade places had it.

reply

I'd have to know the title of the game to use the search engine on the machine itself

reply

Gunsmoke?

reply

No, that's not it; the game was not an overhead view. I remember seeing a villain at a ground-level window in a western town. When I shot him, a voice would say, "LUCKY," which was funny. Most games made sounds but did not talk.

I looked at Gun.Smoke on YouTube and a few others, but I don't see it.

I liked MS. PACMAN, ASTEROIDS, GALAGA, GALAXIAN, Ms. Pac-Man and others. I think Dave and Busters tried to re-create the video game parlor experience.

Good to hear from you, Vas'. We miss you on Stonekeeper's Move game; too many players are gone.

Yes..

reply

That sounds really super cool and I'm not even a gamer.
That appliance sound very neat though, I know EXACTLY where I'd put it in my house.

Do you know the brand name, I'd like to look it up.

reply

I dunno, I have met a lot of girls and women who play video games but not many that like d & d type games.

reply

We exist, it's just doing the role-playing on a computer is easier. It takes a certain amount of imagination to play tabletop games like D&D, and not everyone understands that.

reply

I know a lot of women who like gaming.

reply

really?
twitch is full of female gamers

reply

Guessing that would be more for the attention, no? I don't use twitch

reply

There's a few who are legit, but yeah for the most part it's a bunch of "gamer girls" in low cut tops and revealing cosplay leaning towards the camera.

reply

true. but even so they've expanded from onlyfans and stuff.
guess they sort of "enjoy" it

reply

I'm told that they do enjoy gaming as much as men, but they are gatekept by sexist gamers and shop owners, and also the sexism and misogyny in the games.

My nephew's girlfriend is a gamer. She's a pretty solid Helldivers 2 player. So I know they do exist!

reply

The ones who accuse people of being sexist gatekeepers are full of shit. Girls have enjoyed games for years just the way they were. It wasn't until gaming became mainstream that stupid, shallow, man-hating land-whales (the kind that no sane man would touch), came in and started whining and ruining everything.

reply

Amen.

SAID AMERI GIRL.😂

reply

Incorrect.

Loads of women and even men have had problems with the portrayal of a lot of female characters in gaming since their inception, especially the hyper-sexualisation of certain characters. I remember when Bayonetta came out, a male friend was turned off by the constant sexual framing of the main character during battle, which he found distracting and pointless to the story. But there weren't always spaces available to discuss it because gaming was still a pretty niche thing for a while and the conventions and arenas that did exist were dominated by male players who were and are very vocal about cosigning the rampant misogyny present in games. The rise of social media finally gave them a place to talk to each other without being told to go kill themselves - which still happens to some girls who game online.

Also, what's the relevance of calling anyone a land-whale? Is a woman's opinion only valid based on whether a man would touch her or not? Or do you perceive other women - even the theoretically non-threatening land-whales - as that much of a threat to the attention you get from men that even the mention of them incites your rage?

reply

Imagine buying a game like bayonetta and being offended that it's sexual. Does your friend also watch naughty movies for the plot?

reply

Who said he was offended? He was frustrated because he was getting gratuitous close ups of a character's body mid-battle, which was slowing down the game. Also, if you're equating video games in general with porn, that's a problem, given that a lot of games are for kids, like that extends outside the realm of just sexism.

reply

“which he found distracting”

I wonder why, lol.

reply

He was probably wondering why he suddenly had a hankering to watch Asian Babes vol II lol.

reply

🤣👍

reply

Some of us game, the problem is, those of us who enjoy it are in the minority.

Many women (just like many men) are stupid, shallow idiots that want the simple things in life and don't want to bother their minds with complicated stuff like games.

reply

😂

reply

I prefer the company of men for easy going fun times...hunting, fishing, camping and outdoors guy stuff in general... It's fun to talk shit with guys as a guy. Silly jokes, tales of funny misadventures, the coolest cars you ever owned and all sorts of sports and movie talk are fun with the boys...Most women are NOT a lot of fun. You need to be in love with a woman to laugh honestly with her and in my honest opinion that sort of female is quite rare.

Women like a guy with a good paying gig and who is focused on property ownership and a solid career with an exit strategy... 401K, Roth IRA, Pension plan, life insurance, your exit plan is key to success.

A man needs to chart a course, don't depend on some grasping or disorganized woman to tell you what to do with your investments and salary.

Sounds like a typical afternoon in the pub for me.

My 9 year old daughter plays Roblox and Imposter (Among Us) online with her classmates.
She has a Nintendo Switch with an assortment of games.
Also, the plays Pokémon Go, but that’s my fault, lol.
