Worst vacation location for you?

I did Barcelona once. Horrid place. They sell hard core porn, including gay porn, in the newstands like it's just normal.

Hookers doing guys in the streets at night.

I was offered drugs constantly by Arab looking dealers.

Yeah, not a good place.

What about you?

reply

Vegas

reply

I'm with you. That place scares me.

reply

is awesome.

reply

I love Vegas. Been 3 times. I live in Reno. No comparison, of course.

reply

I've never been to Reno, but I've been to Vegas at least a dozen times. All family trips. I don't even gamble. After 20 years, I'm still a sucker for the Bellagio fountains.

Vegas is a great hub for exploring the southwest. If you go at the right time, you get an amazing hotel room for a very reasonable price with resort amenities.

reply

The dining options are incredible. The shopping is the best of the best.

reply

Very true. I'm not a big shopper but I make up for it in the dining department. At the larger properties (Mandalay, Bellagio, MGM, Wynn, etc.) you could eat at a different restaurant every night for two weeks without leaving the premises. Plenty of In-N-Out Burger's around town as well!

reply

This is a strange way to advocate for a vacation destination, at least to me.
Sounds like a retirement community. Don't go anywhere, don't experience anything but the food. Yay.
And don't get me started on the endless jokes one could make about In-N-Out Burger. Wut ??

reply

Agreed. Was there for my 40th birthday. I checked it off the list and am happy to never go back.

reply

My wife and I went to Vegas about 8 years ago (5 nights) and had a great time. We stayed at the Bellagio and were total tourists - Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon helicopter ride, David Copperfield, Cirque De Soleil - great fun.

reply

I’ve been twice and enjoyed it.

Once was arriving at 5am with my friend from LA, gambling, going to a cheap motel, crawling out of bed around 2pm and doing a buffet lunch that went into the dinner start time and they brought out crabs, it was great.

2nd time by myself but made a friend on the bus there who lived in Vegas.

I did three nights at the mandalay bay, enjoyed the resort, went to the Beatles Love show, then spent two nights hanging out with my new friend at his place. Good holidays.

reply

I thought Venice stank back in the summer of 95. It was a dry summer and with the low tide it stank.

reply

Greece is an awful place with awful people. Ridiculously arrogant.

North Korea seems like a great place, though!

reply

I remember years ago my mom saying that Greece was a big disappointment (I've never been). It's been too long to remember all her reasons, I only recall something like it was too touristy, well beyond what you would normally expect.

reply

Paris and Rome are also very touristy, but my experiences there are way more positive than Greece.

reply

I've been to Greece a few times - too the wife to Athens about 8 years ago (5 nights) - had a super time.

reply

Maybe you just never ran into Greek people. I got spit at and verbally abused as a teenager, so no one's going to convince me it's a great place.

reply

That's terrible, but fortunately I've always had the opposite experience - just lucky I guess.

reply

Creta is a beautiful island.

reply

Looking forward to the response from our International Man of Mystery, Andy King. He seems to have a lot of stamps in his passport.

reply

It's Good to be King

reply

Oh yeah!

reply

I was reluctant at first, as I didn't like the negative tone of the thread - I prefer to talk about the best times I've had.

reply

Glad you decided to weigh in. I think everyone enjoys hearing about your travel adventures.

reply

You're too kind sir. All my friends reckon I should do a blog of some sort, but it would mean having to start again, lol. Seriously though, I'm happy to share the knowledge (and funny stories).

reply

SHOGUN'S HOUSE.

reply

It's the pits!

reply

Norway. The cities and women are beautiful. Why the hate? Some roads are really high up and they drop off at the end of the side of the road. Most scared I have been in my life.

reply

Many scary roads in Greece, Italy and Spain I’ve traversed and heard about......and have seen those in South America on TV.....yikes!

reply

New York City. I've never had a truly horrible experience anywhere, but NYC is hyped up so much, yet is a major let down irl. Again, it's not a bad place, but it's just not the thrill ride that it's constantly promoted as.

reply

All of the stories I've heard of NYC is that it is a rat-infested sh!thole.

reply

I couldn't say I had that experience. But it just wasn't that interesting, especially not for how much you pay to stay there.

reply

I've heard the same about wherever it is you live.
My point is - anyone can promote the worst aspects of any place like having an axe to grind.
I doubt the denizens of what makes NY good or great are complaining as much as the disgruntled opportunists want to claim.

reply

Accurate.

reply

I absolutely love the buzz from walking around NYC. I've been loads of times and took the wife about 9 years ago (4 weeks, taking in NYC, Philly, DC and Boston - we were meant to go to Niagara Falls, but that got cancelled because of poor weather) - I'll definitely go back.

reply

Maybe I should give it another chance, and I definitely don't believe that one trip to any place should determine your opinion of that place forever (maybe with a few exceptions). But as a tourist, I think NYC gets some of the biggest marketing in the world and it didn't live up to that marketing when I went there for the first time.

reply

Naples,Italy. Got a good deal so decided to stay in that area, the whole place was depressing, dirty looking,we got ripped off a few times by taxi drivers, worst experience ever. Had a few nice days visiting Sorrento and the island Ischia but Naples was not a nice place at all. Only positive about the experience is it made me appreciate home (UK)more.

reply

Yeah I've heard about Naples.

I remember in the 90s seeing it on TV and was garbage piling up on every street. I vowed never to go there.

reply

My wife and I have been to Italy many times (and loved it), but not Naples.

reply

The traffic is terrible. We once took the HOHO and it took hours to get around what should have been a 45 minute loop.

It's an interesting city, but IMO, best seen walking around.

reply

Even Paulie from the Sopranos doesn't like it! He can't wait to get back to good ol' New Jersey!
