People who get slandered that you will not stand for.

I will defend these people from the constant slander they receive.

Guy Ritchie. I've heard constant criticisms that he's a Tarantino ripoff. First, Tarantino is a notorious ripoff artist so I don't see how he can be ripping him off. Second, he's got his own style. He makes fun action movies and you actually have to pay attention to the story.

Tom Cruise. No one really hated him before he jumped on Oprah's couch. Is he weird? Sure. But I don't see how that's enough to hate someone. The man entertains and is willing to do his own stunts. No one on movie sets have never complained about his behaviour either. Big fan right here.

Gwyneth Paltrow. I just don't get the hate. She's never said anything controversial. She's not some crazed political nut who thinks she's right. She's a decent actress. People don't really give any good reason to hate her other than "it's just the way she is".

Jack Black. I think he's funny. A lot of people think he's annoying and plays up his fatness.

reply

I've got mixed feelings about Tom Cruise. Thumbs down for his advocacy of Scientology. On the other hand, he called out Dr. Phil for his BS, and I've gotta like the guy for that.

reply

Like I said, he's a strange dude. But the guy is the epitome of a movie star. Great action, does his own stunts. All he wants to do is entertain.

reply

Pretty much any celebrity that is dead and cannot defend themselves against new slander / click bait accusations.

The term Rest In Peace should mean something.

reply

Or pretty much any politician born before 1900.

reply

Michael Jackson

reply

NEW allegations.

reply

Slandered is a very specific legal term , I think you meant "shit on"

reply

People always say "I will not stand for _________ slander." I'm just doing a version of that.

reply

I was going to say the same thing. Samoanjoes is conflating criticism and ridicule with slander.

reply

I know the difference. People jokingly say that they won't stand for any (insert person here) slander.

reply

By doing it that way though you are excluding/allowing 95% of the abuse your heroes are recieving.

For instance , by your rationale, if I say
"I think Tom Cruise is a dick because , er , he's short"
That criticism isnt covered in the scope of your thread?

reply

True, but I'd be willing to accept anything.

reply

I'm bored so I'll chime in with my opinions...

Guy Ritchie: I like his movies more than Tarantino's for the most part. He's the master of British lowlife criminal movies and those Sherlock Holmes movies are a blast.

Tom Cruise: The only true movie star left, in my opinion. I'd go pay to see his movies in a theater no matter what. I'd like to see him go back to more dramatic roles but I think he's trying to get as many action movies in as he can before he starts to fall apart.

Gwyneth Paltrow: The reason she's hated is she's very pampered and entitled. She's never had to work for anything (her godfather was Steven Spielberg and her parents were in the business) and it shows, so that can rub people the wrong way. It doesn't help that she runs that website Goop where you can get a candle that smells like a vagina and a $20 lip balm. The majority of their products are overpriced garbage that upper-class housewives scoop up to show off with their Lulu Lemon sweats and Patagonia vests.

Jack Black: I can see how Black can be annoying but he is really harmless and fun. He's fantastic in small doses and can kill it in certain roles (Jumanji, School of Rock).

I need more detail about this vagina balm.

So did she sit on a jar and let the aroma from her vag fill it? Or did someone smell her vag and was like "I can duplicate that smell for you"?

reply

Can you imagine? Gwen marches into the board room, stands on the table, lifts her skirt up, and points to her crotch she moves from employee to employee saying "market that."

reply

Well, that's what they do for armpits...

reply

Gwyneth Paltrow used to date Brad Pitt. Now we're talking about people smelling armpits. It all makes sense.

reply

We're through the looking glass here people.

reply

100% this^

reply

As Anubis said, this^

Cruise is certainly odd but pretty charismatic, and I DO think there are other stars people would fill a theater for though...Bale and Leo come to mind

reply

I WILL NOT stand for any slander of samoanjoe!

reply

Didn't you call me a cyborg-dinosaur hybrid Nazi sympathizer who likes to beat up dwarves just the other day?

reply

No..... well... maybe..... um..... yes.

reply

Tom Cruise, never really liked him, I didn't like him with Mimi Rogers, or Nicole Kidman either. On the other hand, I don't hate him and I have enjoyed quite a few of his movies.

Gwyneth Paltrow. She has said a lot of things that have raised eyebrows when it comes to Goop. As a woman, I think that a lot of what she is selling is harmful, especially to women who can't afford her products and try knock offs. She had a bit of a reputation for being nasty (which isn't out of the norm for divas) and she's admitted that her dad told her she was being an asshole. I don't hate her acting but I do hate her attitude with goop.

Jack Black. Can't stand him. Never could. I just find him really annoying. Even in the few roles that were a little more serious, he was still a little goofy. I also find several other comedians annoying, not just him.

People who I will defend

Those who are shit on because of their weight too much or too little, Jack Black included.

reply

It seems that Goop was the worst thing Paltrow decided to do. At least they give money to charity.

reply

she's peddled a lot of very silly snake-oil stuff, popularizing sham products, giving a platform to hiv deniers, etc...

good on anyone who gives to charity, but bad thinking is bad thinking, so i'm ok with criticizing her with alacrity for that stuff.

i think this article does a good job of summarizing the sort of harmful thinking goop popularizes.

https://theness.com/neurologicablog/index.php/goop-nonsense-yes-it-matters/

i'm with you in not going along when people attack actors for being actors, etc. but paltrow has done something different, and i'm all for piling on her.

reply

Why would they hire an HIV denier to be a keynote speaker? It's not even an opinion.

reply

she's becoming the next Kevin Trudeau

reply

Mort Sahl, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Bill Hicks, Roger Waters, Marlon Brando, John Cassavetes

reply

I think the only peoplw who criticize Roger Waters are people that don't agree with his politics.

reply

It's odd, because those same people will say "Why can't he just stick to what he did in the 70s" - which was also very political.

It's all well and fine when he criticizes others, but when the criticism hits them, they suddenly become trendy justice whoriors.

reply

For me, it is Michael Jackson.
It is not funny when things are so bad, that people can start to slander him again a decade after he passed away.

reply

He's similar to Tom Cruise. They're both weird but people treat them like they're evil.

reply

I will defend him also. Wade Robson is the sleaziest opportunist around. He wasn't abused sexually by Michael Jackson. His story has so many holes. I believe he thought he was molested, or convinced himself, and then needed to create memories to make it real to himself. He's a friggin weirdo.
