Jim, many movie pages still don't have any messages in their boards?

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought you were importing over all of the messages from all of the archived IMDB boards this weekend? I keep checking the Police Academy movies as a point of reference and only Police Academy 1's message board and comments. The sequels have no comments in their respective board. Were you not importing all of the comments of all of the individual movie boards?

reply

He's probably not done yet... There are still plenty of hours left in the day.

reply

I don't mean to sound like a complainer, but I haven't noticed any archived posts added since the announcement.

Patience, King. Patience.

reply

He did say it was more complicated than he thought it would be. Be grateful that he's trying.

reply

It's going to be an all-at-once thing, so one second you won't see any new archived posts and the next second there will be millions of new archived posts.

I've been working on it all weekend but unfortunately it's taking a bit longer than I expected, particularly the merging part. I'm going to keep hacking away at it, but realistically I think it might take a few more days. Hope you guys can wait!

It's going to be a major update for us, included with a few new things that I haven't mentioned yet. Also, incase anyone's wondering, I haven't forgotten about the moderator applications - I will get to that once this update is finished.

Back to work now...

reply

Thanks again! 🤗
Just don't overwork yourself trying to get it all done. 😬

You are doing great job Jim. What about adding profile pictures or avatars in the accounts?

Thanks for the update Jim. Shows you really care about us and the site!!

reply

Thank you Jim! Really exciting news! Your hard work and continued effort is very much appreciated!

reply

Thank you Jim for all you've done and all you're doing.

reply

Thanks a lot , Jim! I have two questions in particular:

I noticed that you already included brand new movies, added to the base after the shutdown. Is this automatic generated that moviechat gets the imdb updates or do you have to do it manually?

After the archive update - are the new threads and posts still visible in correct date order? (I mean the threads created only on moviechat after shutdown) Or overwritten ?

reply

WRT second query, the answer is yes.

As example, my first post on this site was three weeks ago in a TV programme thread. That post is still visible in correct date order.

reply

Thanks, Jim! I appreciate all your hard work.

reply

Thank you Jim for all your hard work!

Thanks Cathal but I feel I want to remain on this site, until all the posts/threads are transferred here.

Tomb raider had the same issue

About this archived thread stuff: no offence Jim but can someone explain the point in that?

I’ve noticed we got some old threads on here from IMDB like “IMDB CLOSING GOODBYE FOREVER” and some other archived threads that to me seem a bit irrelevant, pointless and already done and dead.

Sure if some group of friends lets say wants to continue a specific thread from IMDB fair enough but so far I've found a lot of old stuff that unless I'm mistaken seems to be archived from IMDB that I doubt anyone is going to respond to.

Are the OPs of half this stuff even on MovieChat?

reply

I can only speak for myself, but I read old threads and don't respond to them when I'm looking for an explanation of a plot point or opinions in general about more obscure movies. Some of the old threads for bad movies are hilarious too.

reply

Agreed....some pages here have alot of the archived IMDB posts and hopefully Jim will bring over the rest

reply

The point is to save interesting, relevant or funny discussions that may go back many years. Many of us checked out the IMDb message boards after seeing a movie or tv show (new and old) to see what other people had to say about it. It's interesting and entertaining to see other people's opinions and perhaps get some answers to your questions. You don't have to start a new thread hoping someday someone might reply. Most of the time on IMDb I was actually a lurker instead of an active poster.

Yes, it's a shame to have many irrelevant threads like you mentioned, but there's no way for jim to go through all the boards and delete those threads.

Because when its easy to scrape someone else's site for all the data (without doing the work yourself) then add it to your own site then why not - hey Jim doesn't care about screwing other people to placate the congregation - all hail Jim, btw how is the Netflix lawsuit going?

When exactly is the second coming or has it already arrived?

reply

Fuck off, cathal.

reply

We as the sites' participated can "delete" them ourselves, so to speak. For every comment or comment thread that you find irrelevant, such as the kind you mentioned, all you have to do is click on the [-] symbol next to the posters name and it will close/hide that thread. There doesn't seem to be a way to do it with the OP's original post, but you can do it to comments and threads within the post. It helps to keep things more uncluttered and tidy. Hopefully though, Jim will eventually put that symbol next to an OP's original post so that you can hide the entire post all in one shot. Hope this helps!!

reply

Personally I feel only obvious troll posts should be deleted and then not necessarily entire threads, though posts referring only to deleted posts should probably be removed along with them. All threads should have a Report button for members to flag material they feel should not be preserved which can then be brought to the attention of a moderator to decide what *really* needs to be gone. All else should be kept--even "Good-bye, I'll miss you guys!" has nostalgic and historic if not current value. As for the boards being cluttered, the problem will take care of itself as new posts are added, bumping the old ones down.

reply

Overall, agree with you, and it strikes me as merely common sense.

reply

Daft, A lot of the old threads and posts can still be very useful for reference. Therefore, I find them important to keep...especially the older films and TV boards.
