This movie is annoyingly boring and left me with a headache..
Where are they, how did they get there, why can't they escape, who built that place and why didn't they murdere the annoying humanoid child...
This movie reminds me of Jennifer Lawrence's "Mother"

those are crime mystery movies (except the prestige), we're talking about scifi / supernatural mystery here.
ever seen the x-files or movies like cube? or what about one of the biggest movie classics of all time - kubrick's 2001?
I love the x-files, I enjoyed the cube, and I think Interstellar and Predestination falls under this category, both good movies..
for some strange reasons I've never seen Kubrick's 2001..

The problem is watching a movie without a who, why and how... Like Bird box 🤦
cube and many episodes of the x-files don't answer the "who, why and how" either, why don't you have a problem with these then?

If you were a bug in a tank, there is likely no chance that whoever put you there would explain things to you.
Whatever they were, it's obvious they were just using humans in a parasitic way to raise their young. then discard them.
Dude - the two main characters did not act the way normal human beings would act, so this was no sci-fi.
In reality, they would have offed the alien creature fairly soon, especially given how annoying it was.
This was one of those 'artsy' films - with hidden message and shit.
Exactly. Nobody would stay in that house with that obviously nonhuman creature, let alone feed it and tend to it for many many months. It's very crude and failed attempts to approximate human behavior makes it even worse.

shareCan't take it literally. It's artsy fartsy. I knew while watching it, that it was a social commentary on family, brainwashing and conditioning of our children with tv, etc. But I too, wanted something tangible, like please reveal they're on a spaceship or something. LOL!

shareIt started out pretty solid with its surreal and hellish landscape taking hold of the couples' reality, BUT it lost me when both the husband an wife acquiesced to their predicament. It also annoyed me that they never thought of following the boy to the supposed school he was enrolled in. Like, how did they figure he could just walk to and from school that they never visited? It's one thing to breach reality and to fold the narrative into a surreal one but this movie started off as a setup and just resorted to a wannabe Twilight Zone/Black Mirror conclusion.

shareHaven't seen Mother yet but I might watch it after hearing the comparison. This reminded me of We Need To Talk About Kevin. Although, I'd have to say Vivarium is better than WNTTAK.
If you go into this movie thinking it's a dark comedy first, sci-fi second, mystery third, you will probably like it, but yeah, as others have said, there is no real explanation for the situation the main characters find themselves in. But there are little hints throughout the movie that explain it but to some extent, this also just leaves you with more questions than answers. lol
This is undoubtedly one of the weaker aspects of the film but the positive things about it were the exchanges between Tom, Gemma and the kid and the emotional impact it has on the two main characters. I found the former to be hilarious in a very dark comedic way. If you've ever had to deal with an unruly kid, you could certainly relate to this. The emotional roller coaster ride this has on our two innocent bystanders was very impactful. I could certainly see it playing out this way with the male lead working on a hole everyday and trying to dig his way out and the female lead trying to make sense of it all and losing her mind in the process.
Those that are looking for traditional "sci-fi, horror" probably won't enjoy this. It's a different spin on the genre. But I liked it, I'd have to give it a 7.0 out of 10.
It's nothing like Mother. Mother is crazier and much better, but many people hate Mother, so tread lightly. I love Mother. Any movie that can piss people off is a winner in my book.

Probably did not need to be a feature length movie, but oh well. I thought the concept was ok. Sort of a re-tread of "Village of the Damned", but it took the concept of "alien cuckoo brood parasites" in a different enough direction to justify its existence. I just think it probably would have worked much better as like a 1 hour short film or episode of an anthology sci-fi series
I don't have a problem with pointless movies. As long as a high-concept sci-fi horror film keeps a low-enough profile (meaning it has a low-budget production and limited distribution) then I don't see it as pointless, I just see it as a piece of genre candy and not much more. Most of these types of movies don't have high re-watch value, but seeing them the first time is a fine viewing experience (if you're into this type of thing)

people nowdays are making full length films out of what SHOULD be a quick short twilight zone episode. it would have been a lot better, shorter and making the point. twilight zone KNEW how to sell a great short plot, and not over extend.
