All time box office shocker !--The Suicide Squad lost over 80% of its audience from the first film

So reports are coming in that the Suicide Squad is headed towards a 25 to $30 million opening weekend.

Of course this is awful, especially considering Marvel Studios just opened a comic book movie only 1 month ago to 80 million plus.

It's almost unimaginable that the Suicide Squad could open worse than the flop birds of prey which opened at 33 million

but in one of the best illustrations I've ever seen to show just how much a movie and studio has failed, if Suicide Squad comes in 30 million or under, that would mean it lost over 80% of the audience that showed up to see the first film.

Now I want to be clear I do not blame this at all on this film... i watched this film on friday and in my opinion it's pretty good

to me the story here is...... we now know the first Suicide Squad was an absolute franchise killer.

This film lost 80% of the audience that saw the first film, that means literally almost every single person that saw the first film did not show back up to see the second film.

So now you have back to back sequels to Suicide Squad where audiences wanted no part of those films proving the first Suicide Squad was a franchise killer that killed all hope and interest moving forward ,1 was a spinoff and 1 is a soft reboot sequel in birds of prey and now the Suicide Squad that have now both completely failed and been dead on arrival, both have and will completely flop at the box office, and both ultimately aren't going to make 1/3 of what the original Suicide Squad made

in my opinion this is also clear proof that margot robbie's HQ is now dead as a main character. this is 2 films in a row where she hasn't been able to remotely open a film or draw any box office , for some reason audiences just don't care about her.

i think it's clear now that the main reason for the first Suicide Squad's success was 100% because of the Joker( even though jared leto gave an all time awful performance)

when you factor in the incredible box office of the first suicide squad and then the insane success of The Joker in 2019 and think back to the dark knight topping 1 billion in 2008 .... it's clear the Joker is just a massive draw

To WBs credit... They delivered great trailers that masterfully hid the Jokers awfulness in the Suicide Squad's promotion, audiences couldn't tell that Leto had shit the bed and was so awful he had to be drastically edited out of the movie.... unfortunately we would all learn that by watching the movie itself

so now after two straight flops where WB decided to go with margot robbie's HQ over a proven 1 billion dollar plus box office draw in the Joker just seems like the ultimate WB move

sorry for the rant but the depths of WB's failures continues to astonish me

Maybe most decided to watch at home. That gives Disney more money as the profit stays the same all the time. In theaters each week they have the movie they send less to the studio to show it.

reply

this has to be part of it as well.

my understanding is that all of wb's slate of films for this year is now obligated to stream on hbo max.

i don't know if anyone can quantify how much this is can be pinned on the first film vs being available to stream. perhaps if there was an uptick in hbo subs, that will say something.

the film has received excellent reviews. i honestly expected it to do great, & i'm genuinely surprised by this. i figured it was going to blow past birds of prey numbers with the solid reputation it was building.

i'm gonna go see it tomorrow, regardless.

reply

I enjoyed it. It really earns its hard R rating.

There was a quick second of boobs in that club scene when they was taking that brain guy outside. Doc Hollywood was longer and it was pg-13.

reply

I was thinking more in terms of the violence.

reply

It was more violent than the first movie.

reply

i thought it was pretty good.

honestly, if i have a main disappointment with it, it's that i thought it could have been a bit more violent. or a different kind of violent, i guess.

a lot of the violence felt a bit like standard comic book action, but with the brutality dialed up 45% or so.

there were a few moments, you can probably guess the ones i'm thinking of, where the film did push the envelope a bit, & gave me that troma/super james gunn viciousness that i wanted. i wish it had done a bit more of that.

but it was a fun time overall. could have been a little leaner, but overall a solidly enjoyable movie.

This a DC film and DC is owned by Warner brothers, also Black Widow is on streaming too. It's box office result is far worse than black widow.

According to box office mojo it opened on Friday made only $12 million, that is just pathetic.

reply

Black widow wasn't free to stream on the service. That is very different.

reply

I don't think it would have made that much a difference if this movie were on pay per view. I don't think that many people would have paid to watch it.

reply

What a stupid analysis! We do NOT know the audience numbers.

It streamed free on HBO Max. Disney charges $30 to view, so of course lots more will go to the theater.

reply

How did Birds of Prey flop exactly?

reply

WORLDWIDE
$201,858,461

Budget
$84,500,000

Not a good ratio.

reply

Yep.

That's also not including marketing.

Films basically have to double their budget to break even, and triple the budget to profit.

i called it a while back - https://moviechat.org/tt6334354/The-Suicide-Squad/60d2e788a69014720f155b42/will-it-bomb

this literally must be the biggest drop for a sequel in the history of movies! (not counting any direct to vhs/dvd sequels like Aladdin 2, American Psycho 2, Backdraft 2 etc)

some interesting tweet ive read that shed light on these catastrophic numbers:

Ayer’s Suicide Squad felt like a movie made for mass audiences, whatever its flaws and problems in the editing room were. But The Suicide Squad seems like more of an ultra violent splatter comedy made for critics and Film Twitter.

Those folks *are* going to the movies though. JUNGLE CRUISE frankly overperformed. FREE GUY’s pre-sales are really solid. People just didn’t want a SUICIDE SQUAD sequel, and definitely not one without Will Smith.

People are arguing that you can't judge box office due to Covid. I present to you that - domestically - movies are performing about as well as they would have without Covid, give or take a day-and-date streaming release. Let's go back to the beginning of the summer...

Which brings us to THE SUICIDE SQUAD, where the writing was on the wall when it was announced. People didn't like the first. No Will Smith.

It's another movie starring Harley Quinn with markedly better reviews, easily fresh on Rotten Tomatoes... but we've heard that story before. BIRDS OF PREY opened to $33M! THE SUICIDE SQUAD's opening is nearly identical, with the difference clearly being the HBO Max release.

What?! No, I did not want Will Smith back for a Suicide Squad sequel as a race-swapped Deadshot. In fact, I couldn't care less about Will Smith in that movie because he was horribly miscast and the character poorly portrayed in that film. He was literally someone completely different. From the little I've seen of the trailers, Idris Elba seems to act more like the proper Deadshot than Will Smith did.

But more than anything, I think this was more a case of once bitten, twice shy. Add on to the fact that there are no major stars in The Suicide Squad.

Yes, Lefties and SJWs love Idris Elba but the guy was NEVER a box office draw. He's just the black guy Lefties like. But I don't think he's ever headlined a major box office smash hit. And John Cena, despite being a ubiquitous meme at this point, also isn't a box office draw, and neither is Margot Robbie.

So basically, you have a lot of recognizable faces in a film where NONE of them have individually been box office draws. The writing on the wall would seem pretty obvious from a casting standpoint alone.

reply

COVID still keeps some people away from cinemas. Also, HBO Max is bot worth getting for one movie. That’s the reason why I haven’t seen it yet.

But yeah, the first movie left such a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, I think it hurt the BO or any follow up.

reply

the movie is online, you can download an HD pirate copy within a minute, or subscribe to HBO max to stream it legally. talking about box office numbers is completely irrelevant at that point.

reply

Agreed. I don't know why people fail to factor that in. Given the option, I choose the comfort and convenience of my living room over a movie theater every time.

some twitter rando summed this up very nicely last night:

"Turns out the real Suicide Squad are all the movies WB are releasing this year on HBO Max."

reply

Packing a movie with a bunch of sh*tty bad guys that nobody knows and having them fight a starfish, I can't imagine why it flopped. Plus add in the talentless Davidson, and you got a dud.
