we live in a society where Morbius is 17% RT

damn thats bad. even worse than the Venoms which were notoriously bad

reply

After his Joker and this, maybe Leto isn't cut out for these movies.

reply

What's shocking was it kept getting delayed. Why hold back the release if it was known it was going to suck?

reply

Think it was delayed from January because Spider-Man No Way Home was still ruling the box office throughout that entire month.

Wonder if Morbius will flop because of the bad reviews or whether like Sony’s Venom films it’ll be critic proof and make money.

reply

It cost about $75M which is still fairly expensive but weirdly modest for a superhero movie these days. Maybe it will have a big weekend debut then drop spectacularly.

reply

That is weirdly modest, definitely the lowest budget for a comic book film since Deadpool’s $58 million.

If it’s as bad as the critics and fans are saying I kind of hope it flops or at least underperforms as it just sends Sony a message that people will just lap up any old crap they dump in cinemas as long as they slap the Marvel logo on the poster.

reply

I'm not surprised.

The audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes are almost meaningless, but the critical scores are usually a good indicator of a film's quality. There are notable exceptions, but generally this rule holds true.

reply

the critics score is pretty much meaningless, I go by the audience score, although that can still be manipulated.

here is a good example of RT critics score vs Box office.

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME
90%
TOMATOMETER
454 Reviews
Certified Fresh
1.132 billion

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION
17%
TOMATOMETER
213 Reviews
Certified Rotten
1.104 billion

reply

Are you of the opinion that the quality of a film is in some way related to what it earns at the box office?

reply

yes, if not then how do we judge movies?

reply

I have no idea. I guess the better a film is, the more money it makes. I didn't know that until now.

reply

I noticed a hint of sarcasm in that response.

Look at Morbius for example, its rotten on RT and will prob end up making $150m on a $75m budget.

no matter how you slice that pie, its a bad movie.

If Avatar was a bad movie, then it wouldnt have made 2.8 billion

reply

I haven't seen Avatar, so I can't comment on its quality, but I notice no correlation whatsoever between the quality of films and their box office. In fact, I think it's often the case that films that do extremely well at the box office aren't very good.

reply

If thats true then Gone with the Wind, Star Wars and Titanic are terrible movies.

reply

that logic doesn't hold up. Mcdonalds appeals to the masses, but few people would say it's the best burger.

Surely you know that enjoyment and quality are not the same thing?

I THINK THEY ARE...AS QUALITY IS COMPLETELY SUBJECTIVE...THUS THAT PERSON SEEING TWILIGHT FIVE TIMES...NOT BECAUSE THEY THINK IT'S A BAD MOVIE THEY ENJOY...BUT RATHER THEY THINK IT IS A GREAT MOVIE THAT THEY ENJOY...ART IS CREATIVITY AND EXPRESSION...NEITHER OF WHICH CAN BE OBJECTIVELY JUDGED.

reply

For starters, my post was obvious sarcasm. I was replying to someone who said that the only way to judge a movie's quality is by its take at the box office, and making the point that I do not think one can judge the quality of a film by how popular it is, or how much it earns.

That aside, I disagree with much of what you wrote. Quality is subjective. You think Twilight is a movie of poor quality. The guy who watched it five times thinks it's of high quality. Neither of you is right or wrong, as it is a matter of opinion.

Often there is a prevailing opinion about a film's quality, and as a general rule we can say "if most critics agree it's great, then it's probably great," but it still boils down to personal opinion. My favorite film is "Seven Samurai." The consensus opinion seems to be that it's a great movie, but I know people who saw it and found it dull. To those people, it isn't a good film. Who am I to say that my opinion, or even the opinion of many, is somehow better than theirs?

reply

I strongly disagree that quality is subjective. There are certainly quantifiable elements of a movie that can be assessed as bad or good. However, enjoyment of a movie is certainly subjective.

reply

If that's true, who decides what quality is? Is it a majority rule thing? In that case, box office might be the best way to assess quality. If you screen Seven Samurai and Twilight for a 1,000 people chosen at random, I have a hunch the vast majority will prefer Twilight.

If we aren't going with majority rule, how do we decide which individual, or small group, gets to tell us what quality is?

Quality is as subjective as enjoyment.

reply

I believe you are mistaken.
I mean, we have people selected that give movies awards based on the quality of a movie, so there has to be a baseline standard for quality, because those are rarely box office juggernauts. Again, you can enjoy something that is poorly made, and it can have a ton of popularity regardless. Low budget horrors are often poorly lit, have poor sound production and lousy special affects, cheesy dialog and a poorly constructed story, but they can make a lot of money and have a lot of appeal. That doesn't mean it was a well made movie, it means people can enjoy the product despite that.

thats my point...some people use ratings as a basis on whether a movie is good or not. example: the critics loved ghostbusters 16, the audience hated it. it was rated rotten by the audience and barely made any money. based on that criteria, is GB16 a good movie or not?

reply

Really? I think it's usually the other way around.

The audiences know how to have a good time and just enjoy themselves, while the critics are jaded, nitpicky and pretentious.

reply

Its the other way around, the critic scores are meaningless.

reply

Is this movie out now?

reply

17% is really praising this film. It's truly abysmal.

reply

now 16

reply

Good. Im so sick of comic book movies. Its literally the only thing being released on the big screen anymore.

reply

You need to have someone explain to you what the word "literally" means.

Currently on the big screen:

MORBIUS
SONIC
THE AMBULANCE
UNCHARTED
FATHER STU
DOG
SING 2
X
THE BATMAN
THE LOST CITY
DEATH ON THE NILE
THE BUBBLE

But keep that false narrative up. Why live in reality, when you can ragepost for no reason?
