How in the world do they speak English?!

A galaxy far, far away and most people speak...20th Century English dialect, full with slang and American accents?! Why not French? Or Lebanese? Speaking English seems highly, impossibly unlikely.

reply

It's just for our benefit as the viewing audience and it was a mix of American and British production work, and you must have seen the English-speaking version.

You can probably change to different languages on the DVD / Blu-Ray if you wish.

At least they changed the English text that was on the tractor beam controls!

reply

(It would be impossible for any type of biological being from a galaxy far away to speak ANY Earth-like language.)

reply

Well they looked and acted exactly like humans so I assume their insides were the same too.

reply

You know you are an idiot....right?

reply

they speak "basic", which like english is a universal language. it would actually make sense in a diverse universe to have a single secondary language to allow communication among 20 million species.

reply

There are other alien languages spoken in Star Wars. Greedo, Jabba the hut, Chewbacca, R2D2 etc.

Do you really want to watch an entire movie where everyone is speaking made up language? Because I don’t. I’m willing to suspend my disbelief in order to get something that I understand

reply

I found it annoying that Chewbacca and the droids languages was not subtitled

reply

then you would love the holiday special, with a solid twenty minutes of Wookie talk.

reply

I would love to learn some of the Star Wars languages. I studied for several years now the droid language of R2D2. Its very difficult though

reply

It wasn't difficult for Rey to understand astromech. And she's a scrapper on a desert planet barely able to get by day to day.

reply

Lets give Rey more credit. She is the most powerful life being in the Star Wars universe

reply

Beep boop bork!

reply

Its the same with ancient romans or egyptians speaking english in movies.

I have more problems with extra terrestrial aliens coming down to Earth and speaking fluent english.

reply

Or in Lord if the Rings

reply

Because Americans made the movie.

reply

maybe needed more fucking DEI? is that the point? DEI should DIE

reply

Because English is the only language in the Universe, duh!

reply

They borrowed the universal translator from Starfleet.
