Did Ronald Reagan do more harm than good?

Iran-Contra - Basically Reagan set a precedent of the POTUS ignoring actual LAWS in favor of policies that were not beneficial to the nation. Fortunately for him, the pardon of former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger prevented Reagan himself from being placed on trial for his actions.

Deregulation - Ever wonder why the airlines and the trucking industries are in shambles? Reagan’s push for “deregulation” of those industries led to bigger companies supplanting smaller ones and the customer not benefiting as a result.

The Northern Alliance/The Taliban - The Reagan Administration policy of arming the various mujahadeen groups in Afghanistan led directly to events that caused 9/11 and the still-continuing US-led war in the country. Basically Reagan’s lack of historical perspective and his failure of imagination are still killing people in a nation where he never went.

His embrace of the religious right wing is still plaguing the United States - There’s a reason that religious extremists are not consulted, nor courted, in the majority political matters: They are often unable to separate their doctrine and dogma from objective realities. By promoting the so-called “Moral Majority” Reagan set into the motion the disastrous policies that not only have damaged American politics, but which also have weakened his own Republican Party.

He increased the racial tensions here in the United States - Coming out the 1960s civil rights movement and the 1970s period of transition toward racial harmony the LAST thing that the American public needed was a president who was willing to foment racial friction for his own political ends. Unfortunately what we got was Ronald Reagan, who spent his entire presidency attempting to clearly delineate the racial divide and doing nothing to ameliorate it.

At least he was a good actor. His best film of course was Dude, Where's My Legs! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K217rguXSXI

reply

Should we have left Afghanistan to.the Russians?

reply

My opinion - look at the people who were around and actually witnessed the Presidency. Reagan was a very popular President in his time, which tells you that he did something right

reply

1. Reagan did NOT foment racial friction. Like all Republican Presidents, he supported equal rights for blacks and browns.

2. He won the Cold War, without a WWIII. So, that is a huge plus on his side.

reply

i dont think you'll find any president who doesent claim to "supported equal rights for blacks and browns."

Even Trump who Defends White-Nationalist Protesters: 'Some Very Fine People on Both Sides'
awww , whatta guy , he just loves everyone

reply

I'm curious if you believe what you wrote is true, or if you wrote it despite knowing that Trump never said anything in support of "White-Nationalist Protesters," or any racists of any kind?

reply

isnt saying 'Some Very Fine People on Both Sides' supporting White-Nationalist Protesters?

reply

If you take a few words out of context you can make it seem like any person you choose said anything you want them to have said. Here's the full exchange:

REPORTER: You said there was hatred and violence on both sides?

TRUMP: I do think there is blame – yes, I think there is blame on both sides. You look at, you look at both sides. I think there’s blame on both sides, and I have no doubt about it, and you don't have any doubt about it either. And, and, and, and if you reported it accurately, you would say.

REPORTER: The neo-Nazis started this thing. They showed up in Charlottesville.

TRUMP: Excuse me, they didn't put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group – excuse me, excuse me. I saw the same pictures as you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down, of to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.

REPORTER: George Washington and Robert E. Lee are not the same.

TRUMP: Oh no, George Washington was a slave owner. Was George Washington a slave owner? So will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to take down – excuse me. Are we going to take down, are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson? You like him? Okay, good. Are we going to take down his statue? He was a major slave owner. Are we going to take down his statue? You know what? It’s fine, you’re changing history, you’re changing culture, and you had people – and I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally – but you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists, okay? And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly. Now, in the other group also, you had some fine people, but you also had troublemakers and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets and with the baseball bats – you had a lot of bad people in the other group too.

reply

This is the money shot.

"and I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally "

Any lib that claims that Trump said what he did not say, is a liar or so consumed by confirmation bias, that they cannot read a simple sentence and understand it.

My point stands. Reagan supported equal rights for blacks and browns, like all Republican presidents.

And he won the Cold War.

reply

That's an absolute lie that you and everyone knows.

reply

Reagan was elected at a time when the American public wanted to start feeling good about being Americans.

reply

I've been to the Reagan Library twice, and each time I was reminded of how it used to feel to be an American. There was a sense of hope for the nation and a contentment I haven't felt since.

reply

Your bigotry snuck into the post.

Do better next time.

reply

Terrible president, very overrated because rich whites benefited under him.

reply

Oligarchs ... rich whites is really an understatement. The majority of whites have been losing ground for 40 years.

reply

Yep and there’s nothing wrong with that. Equality bro.

reply

he helped the rich get richer and the poor get poorer....similar to the current president
