Elvis, John Belushi, MJ, Who else? Edit: I rushed my OP I should have given better examples of who blew it. Such as Herve Villachaize, Bobby Driscoll, Corey Feldman, River Phoenix, Gary Coleman, Nick Stahl, Edward Furlong.
Still he was a huge star, the #TV show in America and exported around the world. He was in some successful movies too, Elvis was super huge but never made a decent movie. Yes, it was an ensemble cast but he was very popular, adored by millions.
The show was popular, but he wasn't the reason the show was popular, he was just on the show. The show was the phenomenon, and it says a lot that none of the cast besides Aniston had much luck in the film world despite it being such a huge success. It's not like he had an international crossover career like true international stars get. And respectfully, pretty much every movie he made was critically panned. You may have enjoyed them, but the general population didn't.
I don't think that's necessarily true. The show itself was a global phenomenon, but Mathew Perry himself wasn't. Belushi had a much shorter career because he died so young, and had several cult level properties in that short time. Also, he was famous in a time when global entertainment was just becoming a thing, being 20 years earlier. People talk about Belushi to this day, even though he died 40 years ago. I assure you, nobody will be talking about the comedic genius of Matthew Perry in 40 years.
That's my point, Matthew Perry could have had it all, like not become a hopeless drug addict, make a lot more successful movies/tv shows, marrying Julia Roberts and become an even bigger star.. but he blew it.
Your point doesn't add up. You said "what stars could have, but blew it..." All of those people you mentioned didn't blow it, they were huge. There are hundreds of actors like Matt, who had a single epic lightning in a bottle property, but never made it beyond that. Elvis, MJ and John had several respected properties over their careers, not just one.
are you really saying that elvis and MJ didn't have long careers, just because they died? FYI, everyone dies, and all celebs fade eventually, unless they die young enough to avoid that eventuality.
I think you're looking through the wrong end of the telescope. It seems equally plausible that Perry leaned heavily on drugs because he realized he wasn't a major talent at all. He "had it all" so far as success was concerned, but he wasn't a self-made man who got his foot in the door because of his brilliant comedy or acting ability. Perry got where he did because of his looks. Belushi was exactly the opposite . He was a genuine talent that wasn't a byproduct of good writers who put him in a position to succeed. He could make people laugh with a mere raise of his eyebrow. Belushi's iconic film roles and SNL sketches were made so largely because of his timing and gift for physical comedy. Perry was just good at playing a hunky lunkhead. The success of Friends is what probably doomed him. He would've been better off with a traditional yuppie job peddling real estate or something. I find it remarkable how much attention his death is getting. A cinema great like William Friedkin dies and there's barely a murmur. A hack like Perry dies and it's universal front page news for days on end.
That's no proof, but I know who John Belushi is/was.
While I only found out yesterday who Matthew Perry was when he died.
Of course, because I'm not a "Friends" fan.
Never watched that show and don't know anybody who did.

Consider yourself fortunate. I was in college when Friends was at its peak. Why people gobbled it up was mystifying then and still mystifies me. I figured it was because witless yuppie types with boring lives liked to see themselves portrayed as clever and amusing.

Belushi NO one outside US knows, except maybe for "the other guy" from Blues Brothers. There was even a time (end 90s) where is brother was for sure the more popular/known Belushi outside US.
Perry had it imo all in his hands. Beside Aniston he was the one, who got a chance for a Hollywood career. He had the "The whole nine yards" which was pretty succesful and Serving Sara was solid. I don't know what exactly happened, but wouldn't be surprised he killed his own career because it was too hard to work with him. Still he could show off some succesful movies, which I still miss for the rest of the gang (except Aniston and Cox). And yes, Schwimmer has Madagascar, but from the whole cast, he is likely the most forgettable.
What was Matthew Perry's net worth? Perry's net worth was estimated at a cool $120 million at the time of his death. Although he acted in small roles throughout his career, we can assume the bulk of his wealth came from Friends and the hefty residuals he and the cast continue to earn.
