Strange casting

What movies have you seen that were good despite the poor casting of one of the main characters? I going with Ghost Rider. It was a pretty good movie, but Nicolas Cage even then was too old to play the main character.

I'm still trying to find out why Matthew Modine was in "Full Metal Jacket".

reply

He did have the ‘ironic smartass act’ down perfectly and he could play scared when it was warranted as when the Corps enters the city of Hue

reply

He looks way too skinny for my and has a nerdy voice. Somebody like Kurt Russell would have been better.

I'm sure I'll think of others, but I recently posted a clip from The Spirit of St Louis (1957) which is a movie I like a lot, but even when it first came out, people said Jimmy Stewart was too old for the role of Charles Lindbergh, who was 25 when he made his famous NY-Paris flight. Stewart was 47 when he shot the film. I still think he did a fine job.

reply

you see this in a lot of old movies where they go for the big name actor who is too old for the role. gary cooper in farewell to arms and high noon come to mind,.

reply

Did you hear that this action movie about a cop battling terrorists in a skyscraper first offered to Frank Sinatra is now going to star the guy from Moonlighting? What next, is the director of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure going to cast Mr. Mom as Batman?

reply

Yeah those are really good ones.

reply

Funny. Keaton did a very nice job with Batman, but I still have a hard time figuring out how he managed it.

reply

I thought that it was Burton working with him on Beetlejuice that got him the gig?

reply

Makes complete sense in a connect the dots sort of way. Like I say, he did a wonderful job with it, but compared to all the other Batmen, he just doesn't have the obvious gravitas or profile. He's such an Everyman looking guy.

reply

I read somewhere years ago that he was chosen because he looked good in the Batman cowl. This reinforces that: https://boldentrance.com/the-controversy-behind-michael-keatons-casting-as-batman-and-why-tim-burton-chose-him/

Nice article. Thanks for sharing.

reply

Yeah, sure, no problem. Insightful, right? I found it by googling some keywords from the previous article I mentioned.

Steve Jobs (2015)
Michael Fassbender doesn't resemble Steve Jobs at all. Like, literally at all. Super weird casting.

I also think the same.for the new Elvis biopic. I have mixed feelings about the casting choice.

Strangest was Care Blanchett as Bob Dylan, but they had a reason for it in I'm Not There.

reply

She was also the closest one to real-life Bob, which is fantastic! I thought the little black kid might've been farther away...

I LOVE that movie, by the way; its creative way of telling a true story without ever actually telling the truth makes it one of my favourite biopics. It's a wonderful film.

Adrien Brody in Predators, I think the role would have better suited an action star like Dwayne Johnson or Vin Diesel.

Beautiful Girls (1996). 10 year HS reunion, most people look 35 regardless of the actors age. Uma Thurman as the "babe" cousin when it should've been someone like Charlize. Rosie O'Donell is in it. Despite all these negative factors, it's fantastic.

reply

Timothy Hutton was too old for his role, as were all his bro friends too especially the one with kids. He looked middle aged. The only one perfectly cast was Natalie Portman.

reply

Yeah. Some of the actors were actually the correct age, and STILL looked too old. Bizarre. Noah Emmerich, who played Mo, was 30 and looked 40+.

I liked half of the Avengers movies in spite of Scarlet Johansen being terribly miscast as Black Widow.

I sorta liked Deadpool 2 even though they went with a polar opposite casting for Domino.

The first Jack Reacher movie was good and even though Cruise was good in it, he was a very very wrong choice for the role.

Kate Capshaw nearly ruined Temple of Doom but I managed to enjoy it anyhow.

Ruby Rose was a really bad choice in John Wick 2 and I like that movie.

Keanu Reeves in Dangerous Liaisons.

Matt Damon in Bourne Identity.
