Classic Films Everyone Praises, But You Can't Stand

I mean, you hear about, and possibly watch these movies that have been around for years, possibly even decades before you're born, and everyone thinks they're soooo great and advertise the living daylights out of them, or make references to them....but you watch them and think "Why in God's name would anybody like this? This film is awful! This film is boring!"

Gone with the Wind - I hated it after Scarlett gets married the first time, and I want to murder Scarlett for being such a bitch to everyone

Citizen Kane - for once I wouldn't be angry at Peter Griffin taping over it with the words, "It's his sled. That's it. There, I just saved you two boobless hours."

Cleopatra - don't like it after Caesar leaves Cleo's house to go to the senate (where he's later assassinated).

Mary Poppins - oh GOD that movie is so BOOORRRRINNG!!!! The only parts worth remembering are the cartoon adventure in the park and the kite scene at the end. Everything else sucks.

Casablanca - I don't like that it's in black and white, and the guy has to give up the girl at the end. I don't care if it's part of the story, I hate it.

West Side Story - stupid, contrived, ugly downtown city setting, and I don't feel anything for the characters involved.

Many old James Bond films - many of them are boring, dumb, or the babe he's with isn't as attractive as people make her out to be

Bonnie and Clyde - remind me again why I should care this film exists? These people are criminals and deserve everything they got. That, and I wanted to murder Blanche.

Every single Les Miserable film ever made - how could anyone like this story? The people in this are horrible to each other and it ends sadly.

Forrest Gump - I loved the title character, but I hate the girl they paired him with. She really was a low-class skank and didn't deserve him. Didn't like how much of society treated Forrest either, or how ungrateful people could be when he was being kind and helpful.

I have more, but those are the first ones I can think of right now.

12 Angry Men (1957)
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Citizen Kane (1941)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
When Harry Met Sally (1989)

reply

Damn tcrum, you listing all that serious gourmet shit. 😀

reply

I know...But I'm not a serious drama fan, or in the case of Monty and Sally, a stupid comedy fan. 12 Angry men is 2 hours of a bunch of guys yelling at each other. The Usual Suspects I've watched 3 times because I couldn't understand why everyone loved it.

reply

12 Angry Men? The Usual Suspects? Monty Python?

Them's fightin' words. >:(

reply

Two words for the last one: "fake orgasm"

Lost in Translation. More like lost in boredom.

I also find the Godfather boring and much prefer Goodfellas.

reply

I see a couple others agree with me. 2001: A Space Odyssey

So, so boring.

reply

Sophia Coppola is terrible. One of the worst directors who somehow still gets work.

reply

Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

reply

I can completely identify with not liking 2001: A Space Odyssey. I’ve watched it several times and it never clicks for me.

reply

Lawrence was worth seeing once, music was epic, but the ending was sad.

I liked "2010" better.

reply

Gone With the Wind for the same reasons. I'd pay good money to choke her ass out.

It's a Wonderful Life, depresses the hell out of me.

My wife and mother-in-law love the old black & white dramas. 90% will make you cry. Who the hell wants to do that to themselves all the time??? If I just want to cry, I'll watch the news for five minutes and save 2hrs.

reply

Gone with the Wind is great because she's a bitch

Its a Wonderful Life is one of the most annoyingly stupid movies ever made.

reply

She's gorgeous but I can't watch it because I want to strangle her. Clark Gable is awesome but it ain't enough.

Kinda like True Grit, if it weren't for John Wayne, no one would be able to stomach Kim Darby for that long. At least the Duke tips the balance.

reply

Clark Gable is good, but he's no Lawrence Olivier, the #1 old timer actor.

reply

Forrest Gump (1994) Okay, it was a charming story and I wouldn't go so far as to say I hated it, but I thought it was overrated and wouldn't watch it a second time.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) I thought this was one of the most boring films ever... and I'm a cartoon fan. I would consider it torture to sit through this again.

reply

West Side Story is awful. I tried watching it but turned it off fairly early in. When the two gangs face off and one says “wanna fight” then they start dancing.

I fell asleep during Gone with the Wind.

Never seen Les Mis but I imagine it as miserable - pun intended.

Bonnie and Clyde isn’t bad but I’m meant to see them as victims it fails.

Tried watching Cleopatra it has that stage show vibe to it. Turned it off very early in.

The Deer Hunter, I know this is polarising buts a bad film from start to end and too long as well.

Apocalypse Now- a meandering mess.

I also think films based on Tennessee Williams plays to be awful. The plays are probably crap too.

Pulp Fiction
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Schindler's List
Jaws
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket
The Green Mile
The Prestige
There Will Be Blood

reply

I agree with you on Gone With The Wind. I hate the movie and have never seen it the whole way through. On the other hand, I do like the book. Scarlett is a despicable person, but in the book she has a bit more depth that makes her a little easier to stomach.

2001 Space Odyssey
The Godfather
Braveheart
Gladiator
American Beauty
The Shining (loved the book though)
