Classic Films Everyone Praises, But You Can't Stand

I mean, you hear about, and possibly watch these movies that have been around for years, possibly even decades before you're born, and everyone thinks they're soooo great and advertise the living daylights out of them, or make references to them....but you watch them and think "Why in God's name would anybody like this? This film is awful! This film is boring!"

Gone with the Wind - I hated it after Scarlett gets married the first time, and I want to murder Scarlett for being such a bitch to everyone

Citizen Kane - for once I wouldn't be angry at Peter Griffin taping over it with the words, "It's his sled. That's it. There, I just saved you two boobless hours."

Cleopatra - don't like it after Caesar leaves Cleo's house to go to the senate (where he's later assassinated).

Mary Poppins - oh GOD that movie is so BOOORRRRINNG!!!! The only parts worth remembering are the cartoon adventure in the park and the kite scene at the end. Everything else sucks.

Casablanca - I don't like that it's in black and white, and the guy has to give up the girl at the end. I don't care if it's part of the story, I hate it.

West Side Story - stupid, contrived, ugly downtown city setting, and I don't feel anything for the characters involved.

Many old James Bond films - many of them are boring, dumb, or the babe he's with isn't as attractive as people make her out to be

Bonnie and Clyde - remind me again why I should care this film exists? These people are criminals and deserve everything they got. That, and I wanted to murder Blanche.

Every single Les Miserable film ever made - how could anyone like this story? The people in this are horrible to each other and it ends sadly.

Forrest Gump - I loved the title character, but I hate the girl they paired him with. She really was a low-class skank and didn't deserve him. Didn't like how much of society treated Forrest either, or how ungrateful people could be when he was being kind and helpful.

I have more, but those are the first ones I can think of right now.

Forrest Gump (1994): Oscarbait the Movie. It's just so sentimental and gooey, and the gimmick of "he meets all these historical people" gets old fast.

Two for the Road (1967): I'm told this is a beautiful, harrowing depiction of marriage. I've watched it twice and hated it more the second time. I just don't care about these characters (two rich, selfish, boring people) and the husband is such a horrible, obnoxious lout that I actually root against the marriage and hope it will finally dissolve. It also has a weird cutesy tone despite its desire to be a realistic depiction of marriage-- it just does not work at all for me.

Limelight (1952): Gets touted as Chaplin's best talkie but I thought it was a pretentious and self-indulgent bore with only a few lyrical moments here and there. There's a reason Chaplin was at his best in silent movies-- once he embraced talkies, he never. shut. up. The speech in The Great Dictator almost seems like a fluke, because that was beautiful and moving unlike anything on display here.

Belladonna of Sadness (1972): Praised as a lost feminist masterwork. I found it to be more of an exploitation film with only the shallowest pretensions to having any kind of message. The more I think about the actual plot, and not the splendid visuals and music, the more I dislike the whole thing.

Bringing Up Baby (1938): A lot of people find it hilarious. I find the characters grating. I've watched it about three times. I'm probably due to try again, because on paper, it sounds like something I would absolutely love-- but maybe I should just stop torturing myself.

It's A Wonderful Life (1946)
A Christmas Story (1983)

Also, I'm not sure if this qualifies as a classic but I hated Slumdog Millionaire (2008).

reply

I liked Christmas Story as a kid tried watching it as an adult and turned it off.

Slumdog was ok but I don't think I would see it again.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Bored me to death.
Forrest Gump - Imbecile flukes his way through life. Gets Cucked and used by childhood sweetheart who only wants him once she learns she is dying. She takes off soon afterwards.

I don't mind Close Encounters, but I'm a sci-fi geek.
