Most beautiful piece of music in a movie

I was listening to favorites this evening at dinner and I have several, but I think the most beautiful piece ever composed for a movie has to be Gabriel's Oboe from The Mission. If heaven has a sound, it has to be that.

Other favorites are the themes from Legends of the Fall and Out of Africa.

What do you think is the most beautiful or stirring movie theme?

Theme From Shaft - Isaac Hayes

I’m a fan of this one. Honestly, I love the themes of most in this genre, and I probably listen to the Coffy soundtrack most often.

I am too; it's always been a favorite.

That is very badass!

Actually, I love the entire score https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRmA-B1G2p8

It's not beautiful at all but the instrumental suspense music from Halloween is pretty perfect

Likewise, the opening theme to Cannibal Holocaust is simply beautiful and serene and puts the viewer at a false sense of ease for the horrors to come...beautiful use of music by Ruggero Deodato!

reply

Right on. The film couldn’t have the same impact without its score. It’s perfect.

reply

No doubt, The Halloween music is iconic
I sometimes use it as my ringtone

Cannibal Holocaust has a fantastic soundtrack. Beautiful and melodic one moment then grim and macabre the next.

reply

An amazing balancing act for sure

I'm not a huge fan of jazz, but I will add Elevator to the Gallows (1958) to this list. The score makes the film and was mostly improvised.

reply

This one has been on my to watch list for a while.

reply

Yes! I watched this awhile back on TCM's Noir Alley and remember the host making glowing comments about it and the impromptu manner in how that score came about.
