Mods on power trips ruining this site

LMAO, no one is on here and I got into an argument with a poster and Mod 1 is talking about "if you get a third warning, you will be banned!"

Unreal. Facebook is a lot bigger but they're pretty much harassing users like this too. I wouldn't touch their stock with a ten foot pole. Many of my friends weren't even using it much anyways.

Baby Driver came out last week and there was barely anyone on there. I think these guys are chasing people away. Unreal.

reply

How come you keep getting warnings? I got temp banned for calling someone fat & got a warning for posting a youtube vid about climate change...

reply

I'm probably about to be banned. Don't even care. The idiots running the site don't even have many people posting here and are running to ban people left and right for "flaming." Hilarious. I just got my final warning. Yeah, this site is a victim of overmoderation, for sure. Sad, they really need to hire more stable, older people to mod on these boards.

If this is the last time, it's been fun. I wasn't even seeing many new threads on the Baby Driver board. It's pretty close to being pointless to being on here anyways.

reply

You "don't even care," yet you took the time to make an entire thread whining and moaning about being the victim.

Seriously, how are you unable to recognize that you are 100% at fault here?

Your lack of self awareness is fucking staggering.

reply

Hello thebricks,

These are the Community Standards on MovieChat, which you agreed to either when you signed up as a member, or continued to use the site after the Community Standards were created:

https://moviechat.org/standards

There is no rule against arguments, however there are rules about flaming (i.e. insulting/name-calling) or harassing others.

We do have a three-strike rule for those who continue to break our Community Standards, despite having been warned.

We ask that members abide by these standards, and that is all.

Thanks.

Mod3

reply

Do you work for CNN?

reply

Betcha bottom dollar he watches them

reply

I am very happy with MovieChat. The boards at IBMD vanished, and Jim the creator here went and transferred most threads from there. Thats alot of work, and its totally appreciated. As far as the moderators here... they do a great job, and its sad they have to actually have to tell people not to flame each other, or harass each other. I dont think babysitting people is alot of fun for anyone.
The 3 strike rule is pretty generous. If you have to be told 3 times to treat someone else with respect. well now thats a bit of an issue isnt it?
I watched 2 movies this week that I wanted to know more about. Not blockbusters or anything fabulous, but the threads were here. Isnt that the point? We should be grateful, and appreciative. Period.

reply

And here comes the brown-noser...

Oh sorry, am I "flaming" someone now?

reply

Call me any names you want. I will stay high, when you go low.

reply

The irony is, the Democrats went low after the election...but keep quoting Michelle Obama, ROFLMAO.

reply

You are so sad. I still wish you a blessed day.

reply

Well said, flowerja. I love that the old threads were kept, especially for the older movies.

And, as usual for forums, go ahead and disagree with the other person all you want, but don't attack them personally.

reply

Thanks Atomic, I just looked up a obscure movie I watched, and there were the threads for me to read. Noone can rain on my parade, lol.

reply

Thanks for the great job you guys are doing. I love this site and really appreciate Jim for creating it. I'm grateful to have a place again to discuss movies and everything else. 😁 It's nice to have a place like this since IMDB is basically pointless now. Thanks again and keep up the great work! 👍🏽

So ... if someone gets 3 strikes ( and I don't know how many strikes
I might or might not have ) in 20 years do they still get banned?

Seems like the strikes ought to time out after some certain time or
even Mother Theresa would be banned eventually.

It is hard to do the job of moderator, and I've rarely seen anywhere
that I think does it well or fairly.

There are a lot of very clever but sick people who work very hard to
goad someone into being insulted without actually insulting them, and
they never seem to get banned or "stuck". And then there are people
who don't seem to even understand what a conversation or discussion
is and how to have one.

People who get very defensive just because you criticize their favorite
movies or actors, even if you do it with sensitivity are people who should
not be on a site like this, or the people who make everything about
politics is an insulting way I hate.

At least you are trying though. Thanks.

It seems the thinking behind a lot of message boards is that arguments will scare away posters, but the exact opposite is true. IMDb was an unmoderated free for all, but the complainers weren't scared away. They complained, they threatened others with the ignore button, they reported posts, but they never fled.

reply

That is true but only with message boards that have very inexperienced staff who can't keep indifferent. Like you said the opposite is in fact true.

So many times I have seen mods "enforcing" and bullshit but they drive out natural traffic & community spirit even between legit posters and shit posters (who often play with each other anyway in conversations)

I will give an example of a long lasting community with a great admin: http://www.upcominghorrormovies.com/uhm/

No pussy admins & no pussy staff... just a community that has been ticking over for years.

reply

Overmoderation is what scares posters away more than any troll ever could.

reply

I agree.

This site has another problem as well that has hit other IMDB replacements & that problem is no one gives a fuck & there is no replacement site. Traffic is dying all round (in my opinion)

All the replacements will just become small groups... if staff can even be fucked to carry on.

reply

I agree. Many other sites, not naming them, seem to have a policy of only using moderation as a last resort against posters who have lost their mind and are spamming the board, making threats, engaging in disgusting, nasty and personal insults against the owners or just are so unpleasant to the point that everyone realizes they have to go. If you're running a site like a business, this has to be the way things are done.

If you're running after posters like we're in kindergarten again, that's a problem. If you can't even have a conversation because the mods are Stalin and you have to agree with everyone else and can't "yell" at someone, I'm sorry, we don't have to deal with this. It's not North Korea, it's a message board, there are scores of other ones on the internet that I can go to.

What I tend to find is that a lot of mods react to complaints in the most extreme manner and take the side of the person or people who made them. There's a lot of cowards who are just plain stupid and resort to snitching because they were embarrassed and can't win. Some of these posters are just movie studio shills running to the mods, using them as back-up.

There was a site called worstpreviews that went down. They had like four or five retards who dominated the site and were just weird. After some WEIRD back and forth posts over a certain amount of time, I gave up on the site and stopped going. I can't remember what they were doing, but they were just messed up guys. They drove people away. What's funny is, I've never really seen a movie site go down, and they were one of the decent ones, but their commenters just killed them.

reply

I'm still working out my thinking about the role of mods. I asked someone on this site what movies they had enjoyed recently, and they called my question BS, told me to get some friends, and it wasn't worth answering. (That overall thread had been a little contentious I think.) And I thought, well, OK, that's a little unusual, so I'll talk on other threads. But I did notice that I felt much more reluctant to post a question after that -- it's hard to know if someone is going to yell at your or genuinely want to talk about movies. I don't know that you could call that remark a spirited argument really, but it did have a squelching effect, and that's probably the opposite of what you want for a discussion community.

reply

I was beginning to worry because I hadn't seen the bimonthly "mods are too aggressive" post. 🙄

reply

I giggled.

reply

Three warnings and you are out?

Sheesh, I'm on warning 2 and I've done or said nothing wrong.

Perhaps if they state exactly what is and is not acceptable and reset their metres it'll be fair but, for me, to be one warning away from a ban seems hugely out of line.

That all said and done, I think the moderation here seems fine. Perhaps it was all just teething problems.

I don't know about your personal situation, but I get really tired of people using forums to unload their juvenile attacks.
Even on this thread I see the CNN comment, and it's simply stupid. Not insightful, not thought-provoking, just stupid.
I'd rather have Moderation than Idiocracy. Just go somewhere where no-holds-barred is allowed if that's what floats your boat. I'd rather hang out with thoughtful and respectful people.

reply

Dude, are you hurt because his quip didn't agree with your politics? People like you SCARE ME. There's a reason Trump is in office, because of people like you. America just elected a black man as president twice, so rednecks aren't the problem. You scared many moderate Democrats into voting Republican and quite frankly, you deserved it because of your arrogance. The real Idiocracy is from the 20 and 30-something millennials who get their political news from Colbert and Maddow. Grow up, seriously. Get a job.

reply

I don't think any millenials use yahoo email.

reply

They might now, out of irony.

reply

My quip wasn't actually about politics & i don't really give a fuck about American politics... the CNN comment was to do with assholes in power taking the piss with it like how CNN threatened to dox a person for making a funny Trump/CNN gif that they didn't like.

reply

Don't apologize. Seriously.

reply

And how, exactly, is enforcing known rules (which is, after all, the job of moderators on any site) in any way akin to threatening to doxx anyone?

Your analogy makes no sense.

reply

I think he made his point very well, you're just not smart enough to understand.

reply

Did you not see any news? CNN outright threatened a person over a gif. If you don't know this, good for you. I am just comparing heavy handed moderation on this site to the fucking idiot lefty twats who mod this site... I will stress the point I DO NOT GIVE A FUCK about USA politics... BUT the mods disagree ;)

Great stuff!? You and Mod? can suck each other off to your hearts content :)

reply

Yes, I'm aware of the CNN situation. AGAIN,

And how, exactly, is enforcing known rules (which is, after all, the job of moderators on any site) in any way akin to threatening to doxx anyone?

Oh yeah, it isn't.

If you get ticketed for speeding, do you also blame the police for ticketing you? Or, do you suck it up and take responsibility as you were the one who was speeding?

reply

I was comparing this dead in the water trash site to CNN because the people who seem to be running it have the same chip on their shoulder with the same amount of credibility & earned reputation.... FUCK ALLL

reply

So, you think MC is a "dead in the water trash site," and that the people running it have some kind of chip on their shoulder, even though we all know the rules and the mods are simply enforcing them.

Yet you frequently post here. Why?

Mods are supposed to enforce board rules, that's why there are mods. While journalists/news agencies are not supposed to threaten to doxx anyone. Therefore there is nothing analogous about the two. Surely even you must recognise this.

Thanks for indirectly answering my question. Answer: yes, you would blame police for ticketing you if you were speeding. All righty, then.

reply

Wait...what!?😎

reply

BINGO !

reply

"There's a reason Trump is in office, because of people like you."

See, if I was a moderator I would delete that post because it is incendiary and meaningless. You have no idea why Trump got elected, but trying to unpack that silly sentence is a waste.

Why did you get so fired up about the previous post?

reply

Thanks for your insightful, thought-provoking post...

reply

I actually just found out that this site now has a moderator 3, unless Jim is counted as moderator 1. If this is the case, moderator 1 would actually be moderator 2 and moderator 2 would be moderator 3.

reply

* Makes numerous posts in which he calls other posters "moron" "retard" "shill" "coward" "idiot" "baby" etc.

* Moderators are lenient enough to give him fair warning rather than banning him outright.

* Makes a thread crying about moderators being on a "power trip" and "harassing" him.

* Moderator respectfully replies and reiterates that harassing and flaming other posters is against their community standards.

* Continues to insult other posters in that very thread.

reply

Yeah, putting this self-righteous boy scout on ignore, see ya.

reply

Thank you for proving his point.
