It is Losing To Mission:Impossible in the Spy Action Genre

yeah I think its time for the Bond Franchise to call it Quits both Rogue Nation & Fallout Have been Better than Skyfall & Spectre

reply

Fallout? Yes. Rogue Nation? Not so much....

reply

In the documentary Everything Or Nothing, the Broccoli heiress/scion says her dad always told her when the films go off the rails go back to the novels. IMO, they should have remade the novels in order after CR.

reply

The MI films are dreadful.

reply

Well 'Skyfall' grossed more than a billion at the box office. 'Rogue Nation' and 'Fallout' didn't gross a billion. So the Bond franchise is winning.

reply

Box office returns are not always indicative of actual quality. Some of the most successful films in history are not actually that good.

All the Bonds since Casino Royale have certainly been a mixed bag. But the same could be said for the M:I films as well. Fallout is the best film from either franchise at least since CR though, definitely.

reply

For my taste, only the 3rd Mission Impossible film is great. I think it's better than any of the recent Bond films, though Casino Royale is very close. Beyond that, the Bond films are all superior to the other 5 Mission Impossible films. More than that, they are very different types of films, and I have never thought of them as being in competition with one another. The M.I. films are more of the straight-up action style films, with the espionage aspect serving only as an excuse to blow more things up and put our protagonists in peril. The Bond films, though they include action elements, are still firmly rooted in the spy genre.

Interesting. I recently attempted to get through the entire MI franchise and got hung up on the third film. Never even finished it. I had seen it before, but only once. My memory of it was positive so I will a little disappointed to find that it didn't live up to my expectations upon rewatching it. It's not that it was bad. It just wasn't as good as I remembered it being.

I will agree that the franchises have some key differences, though I'm not sure I'd agree that the Bond films are "firmly rooted in the spy genre," at least not anymore than the MI films. Bond doesn't do a whole lot of actual intelligence gathering.

reply

For me the one I doubt I can ever watch again is the 2nd film. Owen Davian is the scariest villain of the series, and the film is paced so perfectly. For my taste anyway, they perfected the formula with that film, and have gone steadily downhill ever since.

reply

BO mean Jack if McQuarrie directed Spectre it would've been better well-received like Rogue Nation was

reply

The last four MI movies are far better than anything since CR. Nothing indicates that that will change with this new one.

Bond has been such a shit-show for so long that numerous superior spy films have been sprouting up to fill the quality gap. The Man From Uncle, Kingsmen, and even the comedy Spy were all vastly superior to Skyfall which came out the same year. It seems they can't make a decent film. I thought giving a known director full control would solve the problem but that didn't work. I still think that that could be the answer though. McTiernan or Tarantino could maybe give us a non-stupid 007 movie.

reply

Skyfall isn't a GREAT film, but c'mon, you don't even think it's a "decent" one? I'd say it's "pretty good." Like a 7.5.

reply

I really hate Skyfall but it isn't as bad as, say, TDKR. I give Skyfall a 4 or 5 out of 10. I will admit that I rank 007 movies with heavy doses of bias and red-shifted for expectations. I expected quite a lot from Skyfall. I liked one or two moments and the rest wasn't even campy-bad but just bad.

There are many Bond movies that are worse, that's for sure.

reply

Wouldn't go that far. Skyfall is still better than Rogue Nation and Fallout, as much as I enjoyed Fallout.

reply

Say what you will about Spectre, I did have some issues with it, even people who like the film will admit there are issues (although I don't think its as bad as some people say.) but Skyfall is considered by many to be one of the best Bond films ever and I did enjoy it.

reply

Last few Bonds has been too dark and gritty. I think the Bond franchise should lighten up a bit. Bring back relaxed but confident and capable Brosnan's Bond.

reply

thats what MI has been doing since Ghost Protocol

reply

I agree, the Bond movies take themselves too seriously now. At least the MI films don´t pretend to be something they are not. Also, the action sequences and stunts in the MI films completely blow the Bond ones out of the water. And this is coming from someone who was a die-hard Bond fan growing up.
