A new era of red-hot solo films is dawning.

Aquaman...Wonder Woman 2...new Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy...Shazam...Joss Whedon's Batgirl.

Wow a hot slate and one that will have a lot of people making fun of WB/DC strangely quiet when the box-office results pour in.

Lol...you can sense that the DC haters fear Aquaman as they know it's going to be a big hit next Christmas.

reply

We've heard all before, "JL will slay" and here we are, JL isn't even in top5 this weekend. Who's to say the same won't happen with Aquaman and other features, some DC fanboy-girl?

reply

Because James Wan is directing Aquaman and Momoa's character was very well received in JL just like Gadot was in BvS.

reply

To some he was good, but not to most the way WW was in BvS. Maybe that's because JL wasn't the same level bad as BvS was i.e. there were other redeeming qualities that made watching JL somewhat enjoyable experience. Also don't forget WW was directed by a woman and had a woman as the protagonist so that gave it a huge push with the critics - US is all about political correctness and I'm sure decent amount of critics gave it a better review than they normally would simply because they were afraid of how the media an feminists will react (maybe that explains why WW earned more domesticall than worldwide, but I digress). I'm not saying WW was a bad movie, but it surely wasn't as good as it seems judging by its ratings. Another thing working in WW's favor was the fact her predecessors weren't that well received so the bar really wasn't set that high. Don't get me wrong because of the same PC Black Panther will probably get a decent push too.

Also WW wasn't the only one praised in BvS, Ben Affleck was also well received by most and look how that turned out in JL?

reply

“Same PC Black Panther”

What makes Black Panther so PC? A movie that looks like it’s following the source material very closely? Oh let me guess, anything that is against your views is automatically PC. And Woman Woman was too unapologetically girl power for you? Well good! Keep spreading whatever messages the real beta males can’t stand, Hollywood.

reply

I'm not saying either WW or BP is bad. But they're kinda opening new ground in superhero genre, WW with a woman playing the main role and a woman as the director, sure there were Elektra and Catwoman but those were duds. BP is the first big superhero movie with an African American actor. I don't have anything against other people no matter of their gender, skin color, sexual preferences etc., but you have to be honest and say that certain critics will look pass some faults. Yes it's easier to say someone is a misogynist or a racist simply for pointing out the obvious. Look at Supergirl season 1, my god that was cringeworthy on so many levels yet it had (almost?) 100% fresh rating on RT.

reply

I don't think it was just because the PC-ness. The Ghostbusters remake was very very PC but not that well recieved. In fact, I used to shun WW because the feminist angle the marketing chose to market this movie: women-only screening and stuff.

Yet I actually enjoyed WW more than any DCU movies to date. I was a little disapointed by the villain though. He's just an old man. Not very menacing at all. But overall, it's a solid flick. Better than MoS, BvS and way above Suicide Squad.

And when I saw JL, I was kinda surprised that they made WW not very strong (unlike, say, Star Wars' Rey... the pinnacle of PC-ness today.) She can't even match Steppenwolf which was a walk in the park for Supes.

Maybe it was a quite good movie indeed. And people might be geniunely interested in seeing Wonder Woman, a character we no doubt have heard and knew of since we were little yet not actually familiar with the story at all, female or otherwise.

I believe Aquaman will also gain quite the curiosity from casual audience because of this. He was popular in the past and most people knew him, but not his story. Whether he is a he or a she doesn't matter.

I can't say the same for Black Panther though. He is obviously a more obscure character, so the anticipation may come from Civil War or just because some PC-ness. Maybe both.

reply

Who knows maybe JL and WW were too close to give her more power or screen time. The PC-ness alone can't save a bad movie, but can sure help make it better. The Ghostbusters was originally all male, I know this was a remake but I'm not sure if anyone asked/wanted an all-female remake. Low audience interest + bad movie + tampering with the original that much equals a flop. Even with the PC card.

reply

Yeah, and going extremely PC like what Ghostbusters did can also backfire tremendously when the movie is actually bad. If if just a bad movie people would let it go. But a bad PC movie? Good luck.

Hmm.. maybe that's why JL didn't take that route. Maybe Snyder's version has WW beat both Steppenwolf AND evil Superman. But then WB realized that the movie was crap and Whedon saved it by making Supes the overpowered character. That way they can't be accussed of over PC-ness.

reply

The difference in power between Superman and Wonder Woman unless something has changed in the comics is quite a bit. Their are few earth based heroes or villains that can go toe to toe with Superman as far as raw power goes.

reply

Movie version doesn't have to strictly follow the comics. The comics themselves are often inconsistent anyway.

reply

Oh I know, just pointing out why the movie probably went this way.

reply

I find having too much difference in heroes' strength a problem. Obviously we're going to watch a CB based movie and not something realistic, but it's difficult to take seriously a scene where say Black Widow and Thor are fighting the same opponent. Which is why it was a good thing having Thor and Hulk out of the CW, not to mention watching Ragnarok was much more enjoyable when all the crew was on an equal plane of strength. JL has one character that's so powerful compared to most of the rest team and that's a problem unless handled correctly. Which wasn't the case in JL where you had that deus ex machina trick in the end.

reply

You are right when it comes to these reviews especially ones that Rotten Tomatoes actually uses. I remember reading some of the Ghostbuster reviews and was like..you gave it this good grade but your actual review sounds like an average to below average film.

reply

I don't know if I would really call Wonder Woman an example of PC. She's just one of those iconic DC superheros throughout the media. She's also hardly the first few DC superheros to earn a solo film, that been demanded for decades, right after Superman and Batman.

At least with WW, unlike the leads from Ghostbusters (2016), she always been a canon character for DC at the very beginning. There was no "Wonder Man" before her nor did she serve as a replacement/substitute/AU for a similar character. WW has her own origin story and such. GB was a gender flip remake of the 1984 movie that felt just unapologetically PC in some ways. The sad part there about the GB reboot is how the problem was not even with the four main cast being women, or at least would seem to be the least of that movie's problem if you're not a sexist.

I'm sure decent amount of critics gave it a better review than they normally would simply because they were afraid of how the media an feminists will react (maybe that explains why WW earned more domesticall than worldwide, but I digress).

That quote by the way sounds like a more apt description to the controversy surrounding Ghostbusters (2016) and how the director had even been acting.

Black Panther is also not the first big black superhero movie, but BP will become the first to debut for a long while. There were a few movies that took place long before, including Catwoman, like Blade, Spawn, and Steel. But most of them were duds. BP could become the first real successful one due to Marvel's decent track record on bring obscure properties to life. The character's appearance in Civil War also helped and got more people curious about his story. That one in itself could be a setup to introduce a BP movie soon anyhow, much like Spider-Man's appearance to Homecoming.

Plus in all fairness, BP is also an origin character for Marvel and has appeared in several Marvel crossovers comics since the "Golden Age" era from what I've understood.

reply

I'm actually looking forward for Aquaman movie because it looks like something new (I'm not familiar with the character, and apparently it's a new take of the character too.) I was interested in Wonder Woman also because of my unfamiliarity with her story.

The new Batman trilogy though, I'm not sure I want to see another Batman movies. Especially if they do yet another origin story or just random Batman vs this week's villain. That's tv series teritory, unfit for real movies. Worst of all if they just give us yet another version of Joker, again. Like, come on!

If only they have the guts to come up with something new and unique like maybe zombie Batman (Darkest Night) or Batman Beyond or even Red Hood / Arkham Knight. Anything. I just want to see something new and exciting being brought to the table, not some lame rehash of the samey and safe stories milked again and again.

reply

It's MATT REEVES...no way it will be "lame".

reply

Well, he is a decent director I guess, but with weak script we got War for the Planet of the Apes instead.

reply

I'm sure a lot of people have said this already, but I think they would have been better off doing one solo film for each character first and then doing Justice League.

reply

I believe what they are going to be doing from here on out.

reply

I am expecting Aquaman to do the poorest of the DC films. The character isnt as well liked or well known. And while there have been some ok reviews of Momoa. He has not been as well received as Gal’s WW. Now it doesn’t have to do as well if they kept the budget reasonable, but under JL/MOS seems more reasonable. Shazam lost the primary reason to watch it when Rock was moved to a separate movie for Black Adam. The Batman faces an issue of having to recast again so I wouldn’t call the project red hot at this point, since it’s been a mess so far. I have not heard much about Batgirl, so I will reserve judgment on that till we seem more.

reply

Well...regarding Batgirl we know Joss Whedon is writing and directing. That's red-hot.

reply

Whedon wrote and directed Age of Ultron. Not so hot.

reply

lol hey queen remember in the lead up to JL coming out when you constantly were saying "JL is RED HOT right now coming after Wonder Woman"

lol you said It all the time....whenever you starting trying to talk about how great JL was going to do...You ALWAYS claimed "JL is going to be RED HOT coming off Wonder Woman"....

whenever anyone would question JLs box office potential or say JL might not perform well ...lol your response was like Clockwork "nope this movie is RED HOT right coming off Wonder Woman"

Good times.....Well good times for US posters who love to brutally making fun of you....for you, Just Normal I guess, just another Epic Fail...lol and You've failed so much, at this point it truly has to be getting to feel just normal...

I was going to say "Well Good Times for US posters who love to brutally making fun of you and BAD TIMES for you.....but I thought about it, and I dont think "Bad Times" is the right words...

again at this point FAILING for you has to be Normal...Its all you do...every single thing you say, every claim or prediction you make Disastrously FAILS...It truly has to just feel Normal at this point...So I just dont think saying "Good times for US, Bad Times for you" is that right statement...

Yes watching you fail is GOOD Times for US...But hilariously , its just got to be normal times for you now....

any ways I guess keep going with the RED HOT claims if you want...It didnt work out for you with JL...But Hey Bat-Woman aint coming out for a long time , Hell no DCEU movie is coming out fora year, So have at it...claim They are RED HOT all you want, at least you got a year or so before You turn out Disastrously wrong

reply

So Bill, are you talking about this?

reply

yep thats one of the many times Queen constantly claimed JL Was RED HOT....

lol I even tried explaining once that While WW certainly was a great movie and definitely added goodwill...The facts are JL was coming out too soon after Wonder Woman...Theres a reason why every major studios tries to put at least 2 years between sequels...

Audiences literally Just saw WW 6 months ago, They are not clamoring to see her in another movie this soon, Had JL came out a year or 2 after WW, Then Yes JL probably would have seen A noticeable increase from WW...

Also something Queen clearly never even thought about was, Wonder Woman Literally Just came out on Blu ray a month before JL was released, WW hasnt been released on any streaming sites or HBO or Showtime...There is a completely New and Large audience that is going to watch Wonder Woman on these platforms in the next year, These audiences are going to also enjoy Wonder Woman and Want to see her again....But JL simply came out too soon , JL LOST this entire NEW Audience that Will be WW at Home instead of in theaters...this new audience that enjoys WW on home media, Will want to see her next movie, But because JL came out so soon, JL Lost that entire Audience

lol Queen did not even think about these things or probably truly doesn't even understand it....She/He didnt realize, JL coming out so soon after WW(Literally less than 6 months) was in a lot of ways a negative, Audiences needed time to Anticipate Another Wonder Woman movie....

but instead Queen just couldnt help her/himself...just had to throw out there and keep repeating "ummmm JL is going to be RED HOT now after Wonder Woman"

this is why I'm starting to think Queen might be a child or pre-teen...He/She is either really dumb or is simply a kid and doesnt know any better...

"Wow a hot slate and one that will have a lot of people making fun of WB/DC strangely quiet when the box-office results pour in."

Having heard that same loud talk before the debut of every WB/DC failure, I'm sure they're all just quaking in their boots. At this point, it's unclear whether any of those movies (except WW2) will even happen.

reply

I hope Aquaman is still happening...

reply

There's no way it's NOT happening.

What are you all smoking?

reply

Aquaman was filmed already.

reply

Yeah, AQUAMAN is already in the can, unless they decide to remake it before release (which is not entirely unlikely).

reply

You know what else is hot when it first comes out?

Feces.

I wouldn't cheer since all WB has given us is a few years of that now.

reply

Where's the thumbs up button for this man?!?!

I literally LOL'd. Thank you.

reply

Ditto

reply

Thus the origin of the term, Hot Mess!!

reply

I'm interested in what they do with Shazam/Captain Marvel but I really have no interest in Aquaman. They would have to film it underwater (vs CGI water) like James Cameron did with the Abyss for me to have any interest at all.

reply

Wow a hot slate and one that will have a lot of people making fun of WB/DC strangely quiet when the box-office results pour in.

^^^ this claim reminds of your Opening night EPIC Fail queen...when JL was coming in disastrously LOW, Sites mid day were reporting JL might come in around 105 to 110 Million on OW......and then You gave us a truly Great FAIL Queen....

If I remember right you said something like "Lets wait tell box office results come in tonight, I think when the real results come in its gonna leave certain posters around here NOT PLEASED"

lol of course, you were dead wrong, JL came in even lower than was expected, LEAVING YOU NOT PLEASED...

But I guess I'll give you an A for effort....lol trying the same old gimmick again ...

lol "after JLs box office comes in tonight, all you Haters will be NOT PLEASED"

lol "After all these solo movies box office comes in, all you Haters Will be STRANGELY QUIET"

lol You have balls, It failed in Epic fashion the first time you tried, and Yet here you go trying it again....lol the 1 positive here for you is, At least you got some time before this newest Claim Fails...Its A another year before Aquaman comes out and Disastrously under performs and US posters are Brutally making fun of you and The DCEU instead of being Strangely quiet....

lol but your first EPIC fail backfired immediately, you claim "us poster will NOT BE PLEASED when JLs box office results come in"....lol 2 hours laters JLs box office comes in leaving ONLY YOU NOT PLEASED...it seems you took this Epic Fail to heart and at least somewhat corrected your mistake by Now making the same claim but post-dating A year a way so you wont have to immediately deal with exactly what you said NOT Coming true...

"Not Pleased"

"Strangely Quiet"

seriously nice try...

reply

Aquaman?!? Call me when the laughter dies down.

Wonder Woman 2? It'll make a very, very small ripple in the vast lake of superhero films.

Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy? Another one? The first trilogy is good until the final third of the second film; the ferry segments sucked donkey balls. And the final one blew Chunks. And Chunks is my dog.

Shazam? Gomer Pyle is turning over in his grave.

Joss Whedon's Batgirl? Maybe. It's possible. But that's doubtful, due to the previous DCCU entries tainting the waters soooo badly.
