Why does Stephen King hate religion?

In King's books (and the movies made from them) there is always the religious fanatic who runs around quoting scripture like a mad person. They all seem to be alternate versions of Margaret White, but they are now just cliches and annoying. The crazy religious Mrs. Carmody was the most uninteresting part of the film because we've seen her so many times before. But King must seriously hate religion and religious people.

reply

He doesn't portray them all that way. in Desperation, a religious kid help save the day. I think he just doesn't like the really fanatical, sanctimonious types.

reply

Nobody does.

reply

Most pseudo-intellectuals hate religion and King knows he needs to appeal to them to sell books (because as annoying as pseudo-intellectuals are, they do read).

reply

like smart people who arent gullible?

reply

True intellectuals don't read Stephen King.

reply

Some. There are some who haven't quite figured things out. They're especially into Stephen King books right now since he parrots all the correct slogans on twitter.

reply

Because the concept of religion is silly and deserves to be mocked?

reply

This right here. And the fact that many religious people are actually quite hateful.

reply

Hateful and hypocritical

reply

there no hate like "christian love"

reply

No, there's no hate like the "tolerant left"

reply

which ones tryna take away everyones rights? you live in upside down world where stopping two gay people getting married or stopping a 10 year old who was rapedis love to oppress these people

reply

Yeah ok..keep telling yourself that you groomer piece of shit.

You're ignored you sick fuck.

reply

hahahahahahah soo no Argument as usual. damn the republicans on here's list of mental health issues is astounding. you and demonhunter are both obsessed with pedos. im guessing a deep look into your browser history would show a disgusting overly obsessed person.

reply

I am not religious, and you are dead wrong. That may be true of Islam, which is a doctrine for war more that it is a religion, but it isn't true for most other religions, including Christianity. Jesus was a love thy neighbor and turn the other cheek hippie, and he taught his followers to do the same. Mohammed (to the extent we know he even existed) was a warlord that taught his followers to be conquerors.

reply

"isn't true for most other religions, including Christianity"

I'm not talking about what the religion teaches. I'm talking about the people.

reply

Then your problem is with people and not the religion.

reply

"And the fact that many religious people are actually quite hateful"

is literally what I said. So, I mean I guess you are correct... but that's what I've been saying since the beginning o this.

reply

People are people. Many none religious people hate for trivial reasons.

reply

Okay. They don't hide behind their religion, though. Or even worse, they certainly don't use their religion to justify their hate. They're just hateful.

reply

Be specific. Give examples. Also, I don't think Muslims do it out of hate. I think they are just following the tenets of their "religion". If you really think about it, ISIS wasn't a terrorist group, they were just faithful Muslims being true to the teachings of the Quran and the Hadiths.

reply

you are cherry picking the parts you like like all religious people do. ignoring all the horrible stuff

reply

Nope. Can't even call the Inquisition a byproduct of religion. The Inquisition happened because of the greed of the Spanish Empire. They just tried to draw a smiley face on it by saying they were spreading Christianity. Jesus never endorsed conquest, or even violence. What people do IN THE NAME of Christianity may be different than what the religion teaches. In the case of Islam, that "religion" does endorse violence on a massive scale.

reply

lol how convenient all the bad events weren't actually due to religion.

reread your bible.. its all there. the pro slavery, the pro genocide. big surprise a Christian doesn't know their own text!

reply

Christianity is based on the New Testament. I challenge you to find anything from it that promotes slavery or genocide. I will wait.

reply

its actually based off both, but nice try. they could have got rid of the Old Testament largely and a lot of the issues that causes. in particular the contradictions and the insane vengeful primitive characteristic of their "god". they didnt. also anything Jesus didnt change remains the same. that includes all the rules about slavery! try again kid!

but even still

Ephesians 6:5
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

Colossians 3:22
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.

Peter 2:18
You who are slaves must submit to your masters with all respect. Do what they tell you—not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are cruel.

reply

partly why I won't read king. he seems overrated. constantly reusing the same crap over and over again, including as you said the cliche religious nutter

reply

Mrs. Carmody in the Mist and Carrie's mother in Carrie... I can't think of another one. Haven't read ALL his work, though.

reply

Does he? The Stand felt very ‘biblical’, with the devil and his Las Vegas degenerates clearly the bad guys, and the devoutly religious Mother Abigail as the big good with her Christian-style followers. It even features ‘the hand of god’ at the end which saves the day with an Old Testament style intervention.

I’m not sure that Mrs Carmody was a critique of religion so much as a takedown of those who misuse it to gain power and justify their evil actions, a bit like Warden Norton in Shawshank.

reply

I'd say he's more obsessed with it as opposed to it. But I see where the OP is coming from because most of the time King describes religious people in his books, they are crazy fanatics.

reply

You'd figure after being wrapped around that van's axle he'd get religion.

reply

Because Daddy made him do chores instead of reading comic books all day.

reply

There's a lot of nonsense in this thread.

King has no love for organized religion, but he's a theist. He doesn't demonize religion to the extent that some ppl in this thread do, and he doesn't only depict religious negatively like other ppl in this thread suggest.

Religion is just one of his preferred tropes, and there's a wide range of expression there.

reply

hes a lefty

reply

ok?

"King chose to have faith after weighing the alternatives.

'I made a decision to believe in God because it's better to believe than not to believe,' he said, noting that his belief became possible while in the throes of addiction."

I'll bet about 95% of all adults who find god after a lifetime of atheism are either addicts who can finally see the end of the downhill slide into their grave, or homicidal maniacs who finally wind up in prison.
