Great action scenes, but boring otherwise.

A flagwaver really. Reinforcing American uneducated views that only the US ever fought on the allied side in the European theatre of WW2 (1939-45)

Incredible action, but inane, boring filler script.

The movie takes place in US sectors (Omaha beach at the beginning, later the Merderet river area) where no British or other troops were present... in real life.

The depiction of only US troops is therefore completely valid, aside from the fact that the movie is not a historical movie like A Bridge Too Far for example.

It never claimed to have any educational purpose, so sit back down.

Yes indeed.
Garbage movie, 2/10, clearly a propaganda piece to remind everyone that Britain sucks..... because the boat is driven by a yank....

Edit:

I'm German, and while not a "weeaboo", I sure admire the German military of the time - no politics here. If I'd had to make a list of the atrocities this movie has done in their depiction of German forces, including elite Waffen-SS troops like the 2. SS-Panzerdivision ...
I'd had to cancel my weekend plans.

YOU LOST...WE GET TO DEPICT YOU ANYWAY WE LIKE.🙂

I didn't like the rewriting of history concerning the British sailors who captured an Enigma machine from a U-Boat into Yanks, neither. That movie particularly enrages me.

U-571... what an abomination of a movie.
That I fully understand, I mean the audacity behind this... insufferable.

But complaining about SPR because there are no Brits... eehh... that pushes it, really.

Nazi? Because Im appalled that in U-571 Americans take credit for what the British achieved? Yeah okay... sure... go take your medicine now.

I didn't say "do not depict me how you like"
I just told you what I'm not.

SO?....YOURE NOT A NAZI THEN?

reply

No, sorry to disappoint, I guess?

why are you here

So what would your main gripes be about the tactics of the German forces depicted in SPR be? I’m guessing the final battle would have many.

reply

Yes, the culprit is the battle for Ramelle indeed.

It starts with the church tower, it would most likely not exist.
Both sides would destroy these to deny the enemy a vital vantage point, for scouting and shooting.

But that's not even that big of an issue.

The main issue are the tactics, or rather the lack of it. The constant running into machine gun fire - in groups - despite the fact that everyone in front is mowed down already.

Sending heavy Tiger tanks in first where they can easily be taken out - as we have seen.
Marder III tank destroyers, which are open and basically the worst choice in urban fighting.
The total lack of reconnaissance... they just moved in like "well, what could go wrong?"

There was no mortar or artillery support for the Germans and the biggest offender is the complete absence of any MG42s - the CENTER PIECE of the German infantry squad, everything else is just there to support he machine gun, basically.

The absurd use of formations, begging for ambushes and the chaotic running around without purpose as well.
They did not clear buildings, there were no engineers, almost no use of grenades, no use at all of smoke grenades to help conceal positions and so on.

Of course, all this happened, or did not happen, so the script can happen and that's mostly fine considering the battle is still a feast for the eyes and ears and I enjoy it every time I watch it, despite these rather massive flaws (especially in summary).

Where my patience ends is the final battle in Fury... that... that was just too much.

I figured on some of those points and enjoyed the others you brought up. There is no denying that the German Army in WWII was one of the best trained in the field.

I have avoided Fury based off of what little I’ve seen on YouTube trailers.

reply

Hey, you seem to enjoy WW2 films. What are your thoughts about Greyhound, the Tom Hanks detoryer vs. sub film? I liked it but I felt the Germans didn’t quite act in a rational manner.

As popcorn films, I enjoyed U571, Battleship, Pearl Harbor, Midway (both of them).
For more accurate films, I enjoyed Tora Tora Tora, Das Boot, battle of Britain.

reply

Nobody ever said "that only the US ever fought on the allied side in the European theater of WWII". To say that anybody thinks that is an ignorant, uneducated statement. However, the United States was only second to the Soviet Union among the Allies in WWII casualties.

Yeah, it's a flag-waver. Good that.

reply

I felt the same about the Malta Story with Alec Guinness. The British made that movie as if the entire Western effort in WWII hinged on the British defense during the siege of Malta. They should have re-written the movie to show how the U.S. and Russia contributed to the broader effort to defeat the Axis powers in areas other than Malta. Of course it would’ve been a completely different movie but, apparently that’s okay with OP

reply

Maybe you should stick with Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers and Dunkirk. They focus solely on the action scenes at the expense of the story

The irony though is I find all three of those to be far more boring than SPR, the non action scenes in SPR are essential to make the action sequences mean something

reply

Is saying SPR a Flagwaver supposed to be an insult? So what if it is and I watch it every year on Memorial Day weekend.

reply

Gotta disagree with that, I’ve always found it compelling all the way through.

reply

Go watch Captain Marvel. That might be more to your liking.
