Do a lot of women do that? Alice certainly does, and it must be for practical reasons

To allow a longer bare butt shot while she does it? I always wonder was Kidman directed to it that way or does that how she dresses?

Kubrick was notorious for demanding high numbers of takes in pursuit of utter perfectionism, so it seems like she'd have been told to do it.

Yeah, and for the first time in the history of film, it'd be for perfectionism and obsessive filmmaking, not because the director was just going, "Oh, uh... we need on more take. So... can you take your top off, again?"

Indeed not. In this movie she marvelously displays what I consider to be the nearly perfect female body. Tom was one incredibly lucky guy.

All the women I've ever seen dress have put on panties first, then bra. I have no idea why, but that's how they all did it.

I sometimes put a shirt on before underwear. But mentioned above, Kubrick is known for doing a ton of takes, so she probably did it all different ways and orders. And there's a dreamy sense of unreality to a lot of the movie, so going with a take that seems a bit off perfectly fits. It's a fascinating movie to watch focusing on a micro level like this.
