"It wouldn't help any if I told them I wasn't Homosexual"

LOL. I love how they insert 1990's Political Correctness into the 1940's. People back then didn't refer to homosexuality as any kind of logical choice. I always crack up at this. Great movie, a bit overrated, but it's tough to escape the ole PC dragon.

'Homosexual' to actually describe gays probably didn't belong in a 40s setting unless you were reading a Bible, true. I guess it was just to differentiate Andy from the rest of the inmates who were using the usual slurs.

However, inserting the word 'choice' in there - potential minefield .

Sounds like you missed the point of that line entirely.

You buy egg roll!

And then Red claims that the Sisters aren't actually homosexuals either. But that can't be entirely true, because in order to rape somebody, it requires having a hard-on. And how could the Sisters have gotten an erection in the presence of another man if they were anything besides gay, or at least bisexual? After all, it's not as if Andy looked, talked, acted or dressed like a woman. If that was the case, I could at least understand a straight man getting sexually aroused over him. But there was nothing even remotely effeminate about Andy!

reply

Red's right. They're sadists; making someone suffer through rape gives them all the sexual gratification they need.

reply

But how did they get a boner in the first place, without even jerking themselves off first? They're definitely sadists, but they'd have to also be homosexuals if they were sexually aroused enough in order to rape Andy.

"Damn it, Beavis - she was probably gonna pay us 'til you started talking about poop!"

reply

They probably got aroused by the thought of raping Andy beforehand and all the suffering they'll cause him. Makes me wonder if Hadley broke Bogs' dick when he was beating him in his cell.

reply

Then they'd have to be gay. Straight men couldn't get hard by thinking about sexually abusing another man.

"Damn it, Beavis - she was probably gonna pay us 'til you started talking about poop!"

reply

They're in prison. They have so much pent up sexual energy being in there for years. For all we know, Bogs and the Sisters raped many woman before they were convicted; so with no woman there to victimize, they turned their attention on weaker looking male inmates.

reply

Gay has nothing to do with it.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

You're an idiot. How do you masturbate? Are you sexually attracted to your hand? It's prison which means desperate measures. Clearly they can imagine they're having sex with a woman and get an erection.

reply

It's not about sex or preference. In prison it's dominance thing. Just like when a male dog jumps another one.

reply

Thats kind of a myth about it being about dominance. There´s a guy who has a YT channel called Prison Talk. He basically debunks the whole power thing. In his words, "if you´re fucking/raping another dude in prison, you´re gay".

reply

I think there are some people who are not exactly straight , gay, or anything else. They are just sadists. I think the host of Prison Talk doesn’t understand that.

reply

I don´t doubt there are that type, but its more the exception than the rule. I´ll take the word of a guy that´s actually been in prison over a hollywood movie though. The whole gang raping in prison is also largely a myth. Its actually seen as an embarrassment if a prison gang member is involved in homosexual activity.

reply

Oh, I get that. I know how things are perceived in prison. My point is that the host of that particular channel might not know the psychology of it all. I'm sure he hasn't really given it a ton of thought. And yes, there are still plenty of gay and straight rapists. I think the characters in this movie were meant to not be sexual people at all, but rather, they were psychopaths who raped instead of killed.

In fairness, I wouldn't accept the word of one ex-con as conclusive proof either way, but in this case I'm in total agreement with him. I can't understand how any straight male could first achieve and then sustain an erection at the sight of a man's ass.

reply

As sexual predators they are stimulated by domination, not by sexual attractiveness.

reply

Watch "American History X" and tell me that the guys who rape Edward Norton's character are doing it because they find him sexually attractive, hence they are gay. That was an act of vengeance not sexual satisfaction.

reply

Wow this line and movie went over your head. Get a life loser, and gain some knowledge.

reply

The movie didn't go over anyone's head. Stephen King is not a subtle enough writer to have that effect people

Just because your simple ass found the movie deep doesn't mean that it is

reply

You clearly didn’t understand the line. Also, King is arguably the best author of all time. He is definitely the most iconic and he has more money than you. Go back to superhero movies you uncultured swine.

reply

"arguably the best author of all time. He is definitely the most iconic..."

Hahahahaha, ok I see, you're a retard. Carry on, little buddy

reply

Please tell me an American author in the past 100 years more iconic than King. He has sold over 350 million copies of his books. He’s the 5th richest author in the World. These are facts you fucking idiot.

reply

LMAO you're so fucking retarded that I almost pity you. The irony of a guy using sales to define importance and then telling someone to "go watch supehero movies, uncultured swine"

I'm sure that irony will go right over your simple head, though, since that literary tool is absent from Stephen King books

reply

I said iconic so obviously sales would be used to back that up. Do you know what iconic means? King is an icon you can’t deny that. You don’t have any facts, you just rattle off nonsense. Please go smoke some more drugs you dumbass

reply

"Arguably the best author of all time."

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! HAHAHHAHHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHA

reply

Yeah horror author. Again where are your facts.

reply

Actually, I could see a guy like Defrain using the clinical term for it. He's the kind of guy who uses those words.

reply

I would like to hope there were thoughtful, religious brought up people in the 40s who did not judge others, and acted with charity, compassion and love.

reply

Why is that comment politically correct?
I think that people in the 1940's would've assumed that only homosexuals would rape someone of the same sex. They didn't understand the nature of what rape is.
Kind of like some people in this thread.

Rape isn't a "oh, I'm so horny I can't control myself" sort of act.
It's an act of aggression, assault ..the need to humiliate and dominate. It's not an act of lust or sexual preference.
A person that forcibly and brutally rapes someone probably doesn't care what sex their victim is.

For those that don't understand how a man could get hard without being homosexual just ask yourself if hearing someone cry or plead or show signs of pain and discomfort would turn you on because the non consensual part is the biggest turn on for that kind of brutal rape..

As a hetero male, I think all of that is just as or even more disgusting as seeing another man's hairy ass.

Anyone who gets a boner from watching someone in pain, discomfort, or cry and plead for mercy is one sick son of a bitch. If that person is a man and his victim is also man, he's also a homosexual.

reply

Not necessarily if he's open to raping either sex..
Rape is not really about sex..

reply

It’s a movie, not a doc. Its mission isn’t to archive the etymology of 1940s speech, but to tell a compelling story. The line does not compromise the credulity or the verisimilitude of the premise in the least. If that line rubbed you the wrong way, then I’m going to sincerely suggest you might be too deep in the trenches, friend. It’s an angry place down there in both sides.

reply

I don't think anyone is angry over the line, but I also was a bit surprised by it.

Prison movies all pretty much have the same themes by necessity, rape being a common one. But when Red said that the sisters weren't homosexuals, he was making a PC statement about the rapists. IOW, they didn't want to eliminate Andy's rape by the gay guys from the story, but also made sure to absolve the gay community as so they could keep the rape in the film without creating a non politically correct ruckus.

Say what you want, but there's no way a straight male can first achieve and then maintain an erection over the sight of another man's hairy ass...

No way.
