No Friends movie now

Remember in the 00s or 10s there were rumours of a movie like Simpsons or SATC did

I guess they could've still pulled it off in the next couple of years (esp with Friends as big as ever on streaming) and if it worked well it most likely wouldve been a huge box office hit (maybe even a Barbie size hit)

But thats not going to happen now.. (just the reunion thing from a few years ago )

reply

I think the reunion thing was a better idea. I'm glad they did it before they waited for the 30th anniversary.

reply

I vaguely remember it was rumoured to be either a movie or new series, then it was revealed it was a reunion interview thing and all the fans were like uhhhh

Strange they did it for 2021 which isn't really relevant to any Friends anniversary is it (start or end)

reply

Twenty years since 9/11.

reply

No need for Friends movie. It will fail like all other movies after shows cancellations.

It would not be funny and everyone would be disappointment.

Show had its run and ended when there were no new ideas for characters.

Everyone saw how painfully unfunny Joey spin-off was.

reply

This exactly.

People just need to learn and understand that all good things come to an end and that all things have "their time".
It was a different time, a different Zeitgeist, a different world when Friends was a thing and when it was successful.

X-Files is a great example for this. So many years later they suddenly wanted to make new seasons... what...
I was a big X-Files fan back then but absolutely hated the continuation of it. Didn't work, was superfluous and didn't feel like what we wanted it to feel like - because that feeling was and is connected to the time when it was originally shot and created. And that time, you cannot bring back.

To be honest, the reunion was nothing more than showing up on the set of FRIENDS while reminiscing about old times as the Actors, not the characters themselves and I think people thought it was going to be a reunion episode and not the way it was played out

reply

The Simpsons is an animation and translated perfectly to the big screen, just like South Park.

It's far easier to make a movie from animation than a multicam sitcom.

reply

The writing wasn't as solid though.

reply

Just remake "The Big Chill" as a Friends movie. They all gather together for Chandler's funeral and tear big chunks off each other.

reply

I don't know, didnt they kill off Charlie Sheen's character in 2 and a half men? The show wasn't great before or after but it went on a few seasons after he was gone. The cast is still young so it would not surprise me that as work dries up for the two holdouts "who wont be a-list anymore" they will all go back to the table. You'd think with the kind of money coming in from syndication and merchandise they'd be set for life but these people create expensive lifestyles for themselves.

reply

Its possible it could be done, as now there's a even bigger interest in the show. and a movie in next couple of years would be sold as a tribute to Perry .. and thered obviously be like a replacement Chandler type (similar age to Perry) to join the group. As well as a new generation of Friends played by younger more diverse actors (for the cast to mentor in that 'legacy sequel' way, perhaps even with the idea to spin off a new series 'Friends The Next Generation'). The cast would get millions and give a boost to their careers (non existent in some cases). and a movie would also create added interest/sales to the show (not that it really needs it as its like the number 1 streaming show isn't it)

reply

Haha you are right, they would do it to "honor" his memory. They probably didnt call him one time while he was alive but now they feel the need to show him how much they care.

reply

I would love a movie. They could have a CGI Chandler.

reply

If they ever did a movie a CGI-deepfake-AI Chandler (a 90s flashback or even something later post TV series in late 00s/2010s) would be a certainty

reply

Y'know, that's plausible. I hear that there's a new Beatles song coming out soon, based on studio work done some years back by the then-three, with Lennon's voice added by AI.

reply

The Beatles' song is out. I found it pretty underwhelming, tbh.

They should've done the Reunion bit like they did with SEINFELD'S Reunion on Curb Your Enthusiasm and made it a mock episode instead of how they did it with all reuniting on the set and reminiscing about old times wasn't worth subscribing to HBO MAX at the time for this..
