Rubbish actor

I have tried to watch four Will Smith films in my life, and I have failed to complete the viewing of them.

Now, I just read the reviews and the critics always get it right. 'Will Smith is terrible in this.' Or, Will Smith is 'mediocre'.

reply

I completely disagree. His acting talent and on screen charisma is what has made him one of the most bankable actors for most of his career. It speaks for itself.

reply

I agree with charisma, not so much talent. He is enjoyable to watch, but that's when he sticks to his wheelhouse.

reply

His performances in Ali & Persuit of Happiness alone were enough to convince me he was a legitimately talented actor & much more than just "Will Smith".

reply

He was godawful in Ali. Amateurish impersonation at best.

reply

His performance was widely praised & I thought he did and excellent job of channeling the spirit of Ali (Ali approved of Will's Smith depiction of him on screen btw) with convincing restraint by not reducing the performance to a hammy impersonation. You are entitled to your opinion however.

And tell me he doesn't suck. He honestly sounds like he's reading off a script. But that's just Will Smith all over. He's a one dimensional actor. All surface.

reply

Nah. The recognition he as accumulated over the years as a talented and charismatic actor is well deserved.

reply

those people praising him are the same people trying to get you to pay to see really bad, unoriginal movies full of social conditioning. So, yeah. Find a reliable source and not some hollywood circle jerk. If Will Smith cried and complained to finally receive an oscar, he'd still be shit because the oscars are as worthless as his movies.

reply

The original Ali speech looked the same. Smith is just replicating how Ali talked.

reply

I know he's replicating him, that's the point of the whole performance. But it comes across as a poor imitation. He's got none of the confidence of Ali.

reply

Smith’s charisma is nearly unmatchable. The issue is that he more or less just plays Will Smith in every movie he’s ever been in. Even Pursuit Of Happyness, the best role he’s ever played, is just him being Will Smith. The most he’s ever tried to be different is in Concussion, which he was pretty good in.

reply

Will Smith's high point was probably the 90's and early 2000's but the fact that many or most of his films don't do so well now doesn't mean he isn't or was never any good.
Very few people manage to stay on top. It's just the way it goes.
I also do think trying to maneuver his son into a star position in After Earth made people lose all respect for him.

But I do think WS did some really good films such as The Pursuit of Happyness, I am Legend, I, Robot, Six Degrees of Separation, Enemy of the State and I think some of his other films like Men in Black and Independence Day were very entertaining.
Have you seen any of those?

That's simply not true. While his box office prowess may have somewhat "cooled" in recent years he's been one of the most consistently bankable actors at the box office for most of his career.

reply

But he has definitely cooled from his previous popularity;... wouldn't you say?
He works steady but I haven't seen any great shakes from him in at least a decade.

reply

Even in the last decade he has more successful films than unsuccessful ones. You also have to take into account that he really only does 1 or 2 movies a year and even took a couple years off this past decade or so. Also his last film Aladdin was hugely successful in case you forgot about that, so saying most of his films don't do well now is simply not accurate.

reply

It is completely accurate since almost everything he's done in the last six or seven years has flopped. Gemini Man, Concussion, Collateral Beauty, After Earth, Spies In Disguise, etc. Suicide Squad and Aladdin were successful, but so what? They were successful in spite of him, not because of him. Suicide Sqaud is a huge comic storyline (and Harley Quinn was the most memorable thing about that film, hence why she got her own solo movie and Deadshot didn't) and Aladdin is a huge Disney property.

reply

Sure. It's easy to simply dismiss the his successful films as being successful "in spite" of him if you want to but the fact remains that they were successful films regardless and he was the biggest star in those films. He simply has too long of a successful track record to be dismissed so easily. Bad Boys For Life is currently performing well at the box office as we speak.

reply

If the films were successful for reasons beyond him, then yes, they can be dismissed

And when 85-90% of your movies over nearly the past decade have flopped, then it's time to start thinking maybe you're just not the star you once were

reply

I guess it's a good thing then that more level headed perspectives on the issue within and outside the industry don't feel as compelled to ignore his on going successes or invent erroneous percentages. I hope you at least enjoyed Bad Boys For Life as much as audiences in general are, given the early box office numbers.

reply

Well, maybe they will after about 10 more movies flop with him as the headliner (other than when he's resuscitating old franchises like Bad Boys or Men In Black.)

Smith has such a reputation in Hollywood that the industry isn't gonna just write him off easily. But that doesn't mean his recent string of flops isn't a telling sign either

reply

It's your business that for whatever reason you're so adamantly rooting for him to fail to the point of imagining that he is even when is he isn't but I hope you're not losing any sleep over his ongoing successes.

reply

His "successes" are a lot fewer and far between than his failures, bruh

I'm not rooting for or against him, just telling you how it is

BETWEEN HIS OVERBEARING BITCHY WIFE,HIS SHITTY HIPSTER KIDS,THE OSCAR BEGGING CONCUSSION COMMENTS AND THE WAY HE AND HIS WIFE KEEP SHOVING IT ALL IN THE PUBLIC EYE.HE LOST SOME OF HIS SHINE.MAKE NO MISTAKE THOUGH..DUDE IS A GOOD ACTOR WITH NATURAL SCREEN PRESENCE.

reply

To me he plays every role the same way, that smart alec Fresh Prince shtick. It suits a younger actor but now that he is getting older it looks meh. Actually I never really liked it when he was younger either.

reply

[deleted]

well you need at least some black actors to reach the threshold lol

reply

I think he was at his peak when they made "Independence Day" and the first "Men In Black" movie. He was also very good in "Enemy of the State." But he's kinda petered out since then.

reply

I disagree. He was very good in 'I am Legend'.

reply

I disagree. Will Smith is quite a good actor, he has charisma and can switch easily from action to drama.

Right now, black actors are being pushed because of the Diversity Quota. But he became a star before the PC Hollywood kicked in. He doesn't deserve to be dismissed as he was some modern quota black actor.

reply

I still enjoy The first Independence Day & MIB

reply

Just about any actor is going to experience too much exposure. I am surprised WS has made it this long, but he has a certain appeal. There are a handful of performances I like of his, but I do agree he hasn't pushed himself very hard to do projects that are outside his comfort zone. Which means he is a canny businessman and not a person dedicated to is craft of acting.
