Crusie is last man standing of the $20 mil a picture actors, this works against him. Creating envy, being less willing to work with other stars etc..
Unless he is willing to take a supporting role eventually, he will never become a Oscar winner.
He's not in those kind of movies.
Rainman, which was about a retard, was an Oscar type movie and that's about it.
He's in "awesome" movies now and they don't have the subject matter for an Oscar.
Oscar films are so cliched I realized that I don't care to see them anymore. Tropic Thunder ruined it for me. Before that, I did notice that films about a mental illness etc would always win, but they were fake depictions.
I think Cruise gave up chasing Oscars long ago - most of his films in recent years have been Mission: Impossible entries or various action/sci-fi movies.
While I do see some similarity, Newman was always more highly regarded, I think - while certainly a 'pretty boy', he was also never less than a respected actor and it was always 'a matter of time' for him. In order to win an Oscar Cruise would probably have to hit lucky with an outstanding character role, or at the very least a warmly reviewed mainstream hit like Jerry Maguire.
I'm sure he'll receive an honorary Oscar in ten years or so if he still hasn't been awarded a competitive trophy.

shareIf he takes risky roles rather than be the star in action movies, then maybe but he rarely does this and certainly has not in the last ten years or more. I'd love to see him challenge himself a bit more rather than star in Mission Impossible movies.

He'd be nuts if he did care about an Oscar. Actors who bring in big bucks have a relatively short shelf life, and Cruise is well past his "sell by" date. If I were Cruise, I would keep making the movies that make me money as long as I were able to do so. The fact that I have no respect whatsoever with the whole Oscar process has something to do with it I guess, but I would keep making movies that pay well as long as I could.
The decisions Cruise has made pertaining to his professional film career should be studied by future wannabe actors, including his low social media footprint. Did his decisions result in Oscar statues? No, but being discriminate in your role choices, catering to your fans and being comfortable with your acting ability has lead to a career with the end result being arguably the biggest movie star of all time. Bigger than Clark Gable. Bigger than John Wayne or Eastwood.
