Will Tom Cruise EVER win a Oscar?

Paul Newman later in life did. I see similarities with their careers because they are both 'pretty boys' and their acting chops get short changed.

Crusie is last man standing of the $20 mil a picture actors, this works against him. Creating envy, being less willing to work with other stars etc..

Unless he is willing to take a supporting role eventually, he will never become a Oscar winner.

He had a chance to win an Oscar with Born on the 4th of July, but lost to Daniel Day-Lewis, which is understandable...

Never watched My Left Foot

reply

Born on the 4th is a better movie, but Daniel Day Lewis was excellent in My Left Foot... Pretty extreme performance...

reply

If oscars stop to be political

reply

He still has ample time to win one. I guess he's restricting himself with all the action roles but he's bound to star in more Oscar worthy roles in amongst them, as he has already with Magnolia and Jerry Maguire. And there'll come a point at which the Oscars will go "Hey this guy hasn't won an Oscar yet...time to honour him", as long as he keeps his profile up and keeps starring in movies.

reply

He's a cash register to Hollyweird. If he started doing zero money artsy fartsy films, Hollyweird would run him out of town.

reply

His best ever chance of winning one was Born on the Fourth of July, he then had a go at Oscar roles for a while with A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut and Vanilla Sky and then seemed to give up and go fully down the big blockbuster route instead of taking on interesting roles along with being an action star.

I do think he should have been nominated for Collateral though.

reply

I think he sees a shelf life about to expire on his action star resume and is focusing on that. I bet when he's in his sixties he will branch back out to more dramatic flicks that can cater to the Oscar crowd. He has plenty of time - the guy will probably work until he's 80.

reply

Agree completely, he is a fine actor, gets a lot of hate for some reason.

Would like to see him in more Oscar type roles.

reply

He almost got there a few times. He was nominated for Born on the 4th of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia.

Will he ever make it? Unlikely, because he simply doesn't seem interested in making those kinds of movies anymore. One day though, possibly, he'll realize that he's gotten too old to be a credible action hero and he'll shift gears. Then he'll return to making dramas and perhaps will finally nab his Oscar.

reply

I don't think he wants an oscar anymore.
Hollyweird loves cashing his fat checks.
They love TC Bank and Trust but no awards for Tom.

When was the last time an action movie won for best actor? Ever? I don't know, just asking.

reply

I wouldn't classify him as solely a action actor.

Rain Man, Eyes Wide Shut, Born on the 4th of July, The Firm, shows his range.

I think in about a decade or maybe less, more dramatic roles will open up for him.

reply

Great point.
