What do you think of the sudden trend of the US Post Office not delivering mail?

Flat envelope mailed from 125 miles away before the first pickup on Monday December 28, 2020. Still not received on Wednesday January 5, 2021. Eight (8) business days (10 calendar days) and STILL not delivered. It took 7 calendar days to get it in November.

Several years ago these mailings were received within 2 days, and no more than 4 days in the last year. The letter carrier said that she mailed something that is a six hour drive in early December. It still has not been received.

Are union US postal workers overpaid? Are they spending too much time playing online Blackjack, Solitaire and posting on Internet forums? Discuss.

I've had similar things happen. A letter I mailed to someone about 600 miles away in mid-December still hasn't arrived yet. I'm getting a lot less mail than I should. There's nothing I know that I've missed, but a friend here told me his bank statement, due about a week ago and mailed from within this town, never arrived.

The story I've heard is that COVID has temporarily crippled them. Possible. Well, that also highlights the possibility that other institutions, industries, and such might be temporarily crippled before COVID is over with. I think it's very unlikely that we'd see any long term total shutdown of the trucking industry, banking system, et cetera. If something like that did happen I'd simply be screwed. But I do think it's possible that any of those things might "go down" for a few days. I'm stockpiling extra food, water, and other essentials, and I've got a couple of thousand dollars in cash stashed away at home. Just in case.

No trouble here in Sin City.

The Post Office is one of the most reliable services out there. They worked right through the pandemic and got hit hard by it. I trust them better than UPS or Fed Ex.

Before you ask: NO I DO NOT WORK FOR THEM.

reply

This is what believe. I have several different carriers these days - rather than the same one every day - and a couple of them told me that it's Covid and the unprecedented volume of mail that has overwhelmed them. Carriers are having to handle a single route plus part of another one. I've gotten mail as late as 8pm some days. I too, trust the Post Office over UPS or FedEx.

There are some conspiranoids who think USPS is burning the mail because they can't keep up with it, but they seem to be very few. I have no doubt the mail will be delivered -- but when? Now to be fair, USPS makes no promises of delivery time for ordinary mail. But before this slowdown you could safely assume that a letter would arrive within a certain time period. Now? If I had something important to mail, I wouldn't trust USPS with it as ordinary mail unless I could mail it a month in advance. I don't know how their next day express service is doing these days, but I'd look into that before I used it. Fortunately I can pay everything I need to online.

Nationally USPS is very reliable, with the caveat that there's no guaranteed delivery time. The service varies from place to place, though. Ever had someone else's mail put in your box, or vice versa? At least here, that sort of misdelivery happens far more with USPS than with UPS or FedEx.

Yes, I agree - delivery time is unpredictable right now. I'm hopeful it will get back to "normal" once we get Covid under control. In the past, I knew that cards/letters mailed to my kids and grandkids would get there in two days. I've learned that I have to give it at least a week now. I too, pay all my bills online, so I don't have to worry about late payments.

Hello Newman...

I need a really pretty face. But, hey, that's me.

reply

Seriously no exaggeration I throw out 80% of the mail I get. When you talk about a waste of resources this is a big one.

reply

The junk mail is too much, utterly absurd
My mailbox is by the driveway near my trash cans so very little of that stuff gets inside

reply

Junkmail is illegal in the UK.

reply

Well rub our faces in it, why dontcha!

reply

It's pretty wasteful so good going UK👍

reply

I reckon I might get one item a week now that might be considered junk - before it was dozens everyday.

Write "Refused" in bold on the mail you don't want and drop it in a mailbox. It will be sent back to them at no charge to you. Give em' a taste of their own medicine.

I have a no junk mail in my box from the lovely mail lady reccommened when I moved in 6 weeks ago. She put it there and yet I still get mostly junk mail.

reply

I sometimes feel bad for the mail carriers. They are so damn nice and just imagine how less stressful their jobs would be if they didn't have to deliver so much useless mail. There should be a law against sending out unsolicated mail.

reply

I assume you mean that you have a "No Junk Mail" sign or something similar on your box. Sorry to tell you this but they don't work. The mail carrier is legally obligated to deliver the mail. They're under orders to disregard those signs. He could lose his job (or worse) if he were caught intentionally not putting it in.

reply

No worries! It'll be fixed after January 20th when Louis DeJoy is removed and a new Postmaster General is appointed. The mail was slowed down in order to stop voting back in November.

reply

Yes! I was completely baffled why people were not talking about this!

reply

The reason is obviously political, but this forum is the general section which is why I attempted to answer in a general and nonpolitical way.
