Psychedelics

I've always wanted to try LSD but I'm kinda worried how it will affect me. I have a friend who is really into that stuff and she has promised to be my guide when I try it. Any experiences here? What should I expect?

Take 1/4 of whatever your friend is taking. If she is not a professional and just a drug taker what do you think she is going to help you with. How do you ever know what it is you are taking? If you are curious at least maybe try with magic mushrooms first.

reply

I would say avoid. I took it once in my early 20s and it was a hideous experience. I had violent hallucinations and completely freaked out. Never again.

I would not recommend it. I've seen way too many people like John Belushi destroyed by drugs.

He used cocaine (and heroin combined the day he died)

I've seen way too many people (and those around them, and some they didn't know) destroyed by alcohol.

Sadly that is true.

There is a fine line between hard drugs and things like cannabis and psychedelics. Belushi was a notorious drug addict and died from injecting a speedball (heroin and cocaine.) Chris Farley also died from this and I believe Phillip Seymore Hoffman and River Phoenix both had coke and heroin in their system as well. Moral of the story - - stay away from from hard drugs. They can't be used safely.

In my opinion, things like weed and psychedelics are less harmful to the body than alcohol, however any psychoactive substance needs to be used responsibly.

Only vicariously by reading Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.

I like smoking weed but tripping will speed up a mental illness if you have one, be careful, you could have a bad trip and jump off a building

just look at syd barrett, he tripped hardcore, look at his paintings, some are pretty bad

Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd did a lot of LSD and it fried his brain. Michelle Phillips from the Mamas and Papas did a lot of LSD and she was fine. So you've got to ask yourself ' Do you feel lucky ? '

reply

Pink Floyd is my favorite band, so I've read all the books, especially those closest to the source.... His former bandmates mentioned how people would use Syd as a guinea pig, giving him whatever they concocted. David Gilmour and others say he would have ended up the same way, but drugs (including Mandrax, and many pills and other drugs he would take) just made it happen quicker.

I would recommend knowing in advanced if someone you know has tried the batch, etc...

Also, if you were to take LSD more than once a week, it would have very little effect, just like shrooms (which I can't stand because of the taste).

reply

This is not true. You can't "fry your brain" on LSD. It's nothing but outdated drug propaganda. Not even his family believes in this, yet unfortunately, the myth lives on. Fact is, he had schizophrenia and he and his family kept this private until he died later in life from diabetes complications. With that said, anyone with a mental illness or history of it in their family should steer clear of psychedelics, as they can bring forth and exacerbate the symptoms.

Here's an interesting article.

Also, in case you're unaware, psychedelics is being studied right now for the use of a plethora of mental issues, including depression, anxiety and PTSD.

There is speculation that Barrett had schizophrenia, probably from irresponsible LSD promoters like you. Before he did LSD Barrett was fine, afterwards his brain was "fried". Those are the facts.

reply

Again, there is zero evidence that LSD causes schizophrenia. If you have any peer reviewed studies, by all means, share them. And how am I being irresponsible? Psychedelics are literally being studied by the FDA for treatment in certain mental illnesses, but I'm assuming you didn't even read those links because you've already made you mind up?

As for saying he didn't have schizophrenia before his LSD use, well, correlation doesn't mean causation. Looks at the Beatles for example. All four used the stuff extensively during the 60's and have nothing but good things to say about it. You feelings aren't facts. Please educate yourself.

This corroborates something I learned about LSD decades ago https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/03/120308224524.htm

reply

Yes, there was a segment on 60 Minutes about this maybe 6 months ago. I'm glad its becoming mainstream.

Your feelings aren't facts. Please educate yourself.

Look who's talking. You cherry pick a bunch of sources that surprise surprise agree with what you think because of your feelings and leave it at that. I'm not the one irresponsibly encouraging people to put their health at risk here so you are the one that needs to educate yourself.

reply

"Do you feel lucky ?" and "there is speculation" are not comments indicative of facts.

reply

I'm not cherry picking anything. I've provided actually evidence, something you have failed to do. You claim LSD "fries your brain" just because what happened to Syd Barett, yet have no explained how. And I'm not encouraging anything, just debunking outdated stereotypes and misconceptions. Hallucinogens are certainly powerful substances that need to be treated with respect, but research is showing us that it could be an invaluable tool in treating many common conditions. Please just try to have a more open mind about the subject. Times are changing.
