Psychedelics

I've always wanted to try LSD but I'm kinda worried how it will affect me. I have a friend who is really into that stuff and she has promised to be my guide when I try it. Any experiences here? What should I expect?

michael pollan had a very good interview on ezra klein's show recently, prompted by the successful ballot initiative in oregon legalizing the therapeutic use of mushrooms.

very interesting interview.

good article here.

i absolutely believe the proper use of psychedelics can be an incredibly positive, life changing event.

i feel like my own life would be much less interesting and rich if i hadn't had some of those experiences myself.

In the last 10 years, I've taken over 100 hits of LSD... I never got a flashback. Never met anyone who got one - I think this is a myth, just like 99% of the things you read about it. I can see why people are ambivalent.. John Lennon and George Harrison made a good point, when they were dosed by their DENTIST! One of the guys said how some don't have great experiences because they go into it expecting things that never happen, and they thought it was good they were "spiked", because they were able to judge it instantly, without overthinking things.

This is the ONLY thing I took that removed the "depression" out of me.. I also felt relaxed - no anxiety (except the first hour, because you're experiencing something new) and appreciative of things, and while I was chatting, my memory seemed to improve (I already had a great memory), and having something to look forward to made life go by easier in between trips.

I would clean my house, just so you're not spending time looking for things, but it didn't impair my motor abilities, and I've driven on it a few times (not my choice) and I drove fine, but it's not something I wanted to do.

I would highly recommend trying it, but I think you should take it alone. I was on LSD this summer, talked on the phone to a friend for an hour, and didn't tell him. The next day we talked, and he didn't notice I was under any influence.

In my 20s, I took shrooms almost weekly when I was in the US... Late 20s - a few months ago = LSD

If you listen to music, under the influence, you're more into it. When I heard a song I liked, my mood went up much more than usual. I also did a lot of chatting (in here a bit, but mostly a live chat room) and my brain worked so much better and faster.

I'd be more than happy answering all your questions, because I could go on and on about this.. It's a great tool that stays with you forever.. Now I'm remembering things that would bother me (barking dog), but under the influence, I didn't care one bit---

good post, though i'm not sure i'd endorse doing it alone the first time (if that's what you meant). everyone's different, but particularly since the op mentioned anxiety, i think it would be good to have someone he (she?) trusts & who has experience to help guide her through it.

i did it alone a few times, & i'm glad i did, but i don't think i would have wanted my first time to be by myself.

I have anxiety (big-time) and glad I usually took it alone... When I'm under the influence, I don't want others ruining my trip. Sometimes its the small things, like music. I once took shrooms with a childhood friend, but had to listen to this shitty radiohead music.

Taking it by yourself for the first time allows you to navigate, and understand it, and THEN one can better decide if they want to do with others, and who.

My first trip, a co-worker and I sat at a table-top video game (Goindal) playing it and laughing for about 6 hours while sharing astounding realizations.
Did it maybe another 20 to 30 times through my 20's. Never regretted it. Saw some less than admirable friends turn over a new leaf and become much better people after LSD. Such was their level of deep introspection. I have never experienced a flashback. It has been over 30 years since I touched the stuff. No one's mind gets "fried" by LSD. Absurd. It is a gentle drug. You cannot overdose.

reply

Right.. I've had MUCH worse times on alcohol.

My mind worked better. I couldn't imagine playing video games... Then again, I never felt like watching movies, or stand-up comedy. Exploring nature, music, or chatting humorously, free associations, parody (even my skill at that was sped up, even better - good thing I saved the transcripts)

I spent the summer of 1990 tripping on acid. It's just something you need to do when you're the right age (20s?), probably, but I didn't tell you that...

Send me a hit.

I was just going to ask you the same thing!

If you do it alone make sure you're near a hospital. Just in case.

reply

If you do it, stay away from mirrors. They're not your friend. Other than that it can be awesome.

reply

right! fucken mirrors are weird when ya tripping

When I tried it all I did was laugh my ass off for hours.

One of my friends was in his little brother's bedroom, there was a border with clowns on and he hallucinated they were juggling and coming out of the wall after him 😬.
