Are action movies becoming too ridiculous?

I just watched Vin Diesel jump off a tower (about 50 feet?) and ski down a mountain (with no snow on it). He also takes the time to do a couple tricks on the way down. Before that, there was a guy jumping around shooting about 25 other people. None of whom, of course, managed to hit him.

Before that, I was watching a movie with Iridis Elba in which he shot about 100 guys without getting so much as as scratch.

The Transporter, John Wick, James Bond, these are just a few more culprits of the seemingly superhuman ability to take on armies and emerged unscathed. It's all so unrealistic. How can you suspend your disbelief for such lunacy. Might as well have the characters fly.

reply

Depends. What action movies do you like?

reply

Die Hard, Speed, The Last Boy Scout, Point Break (the original), Matrix: Reloaded (but that one had justified action for Neo), Kung Fu Hustle (a slash comedy).

I admit, I do like watching Jackie Chan, but his stunts are done kind of tongue in cheek.

reply

First four are legit in my top ten favourite movies. Or at least top twenty. But John wick is awesome. But I get it. He is a force to be reckoned with. Same with XXX. The vin diesel movie I assume you're mentioned. Vin on skis Keanu on a horse. All mad fun. Good times for all. With your logic face/off would be a bad flick.

reply

I do like Face/Off, but it's got more than mindless action. There's an interesting story and some pretty good acting by both Cage and Travolta. Speaking of Cage, I also like Con Air and The Rock.

reply

Realism is boring. Action movies are always unrealistic. That's the fun part. I can't even recall one action movie that has no superhuman abilities whatsoever.

SCHINDLER'S LIST

Wearing a red dress in a black and white world looks like a superhuman ability to me.

She was meant to be a new superhero "Coloured Girl" but it was cancelled.

reply

A superhero called Colored Girl that was gonna be played by a white girl? No wonder it's #cancelled.

reply

She's Jewish and fights Nazi's and female but it still wasn't Woke enough.

reply

They should quickly make up their mind to whether Jews are white or colored.

reply

they are mindless fun, apparently, do absolutely nothing for me.

reply

They've always been kinda ridiculous where the protagonist is OP. Rambo, Commando, Segal... They were indestructible too. Sometimes you gotta turn off your brain and just laugh.

reply

Agreed
Escapist nonsense can be a lot of fun when you're looking to just relax

reply

So all action movies are meant not to be taken seriously?

reply

No. Just with a grain of salt.

reply

Only as serious as you want to. I prefer my protagonists to come out with scars and wounds sometimes, but some people like the protagonist to be nigh invincible. Just have fun.

reply

Take them any way you wish

reply

i feel like everything believable has been done somany times, they feel like they have to go over the top with action
also they wanna go "one better" than previous action films

reply

Yeah, I agree. Oh, now they're surfing with motorcycles. That's not unrealistic at all, is it?

Barely 5ft women thinking they can beat up men two or three times their size. I'd call that unbelievable and pretty ridiculous.

reply

Yeah, that's another thing.

reply

I think women being action heroes is one of the fantasies that movies provide. I don't really have a problem with it, in theory, especially if it allows me to watch movies where women are something other than the "damsel in distress" or the admiring love interest. But I do agree that over time it has somehow gone so far in that direction that it is often ridiculous. I think it also has often been accompanied by a not-so-subtle message that men are stupid or incompetent compared to women, so we need to have the woman come in and show the stupid/weak/immature man the right way to do things. At some point it just comes off as inauthentic and preachy.

I'm not gonna name names, but I'm looking at you, The 100.

reply

Maybe Cynthia Rothrock, who is an actual martial artist and has a bit of weight on her.
(I watched so many of her straight to DVD movies in the 90's, LOL.)

But Maggie Q as Nikita was never even close to believable as someone that could kick a pre-schoolers butt, let alone a grown man. Movies want you to think that a petite woman could go hand to hand with someone like The Rock.

I have nothing against woman or small men fighting a bigger person, but to win they have to fight dirty, and that's what they don't want to show.

I mean do any of us believe that Ben Forster could actually have beat up Jeff Chase?
C'mon, Jeff through Ben at the wall instead of just breaking his neck, and...................Scene.

blame it on CGI.

Rumours are the next Fast and the Furious movie goes to space at some point.

reply

I hope so. That's is really just natural progression though.

reply

Remember when it was about street racing?

reply

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

reply

I actually don't. Go figure.
