What's your favorite gun?

Name and describe your favorite firearm.
You don't have to own it or even fired a weapon at all.
Anything with a chemical reaction propelling a projectile is fair game.

Mine is my Mossberg M590a1.
12ga pump shotgun. Only shotgun to pass US Armed Forces mil specs.

Heckler and Koch MP5

Right. Clears a room in seconds! All you need to do is show it to them lol!

It has always been the 1911. I first became aware of it when I was 7 years old (1982), when I saw Tom Selleck using one in Magnum, P.I., which was, and is, my all-time favorite TV show. I thought it looked awesome; futuristic even (most TV cops and detectives carried revolvers at the time). It took me a while to find out what it was exactly, because everyone I asked just said it was a "forty-five," or "Colt forty-five," or "Army forty-five." After some research at the library, I found out it was a "1911," and I was shocked that it was a seventy-plus-year-old design.

When I was 16 I had a weekend job making $64 a week and I put a brand new Colt Government Model, .45 ACP on layaway at the local gun shop. The price was $479 plus 5% sales tax ($502.95 total), and I stopped into the shop every week and put every last dime I had toward it, so after two months it was paid off, and I was on cloud nine.

I still have it today and it has never malfunctioned in any way; not once, not ever:

That’s the way to go man! I bought mine around 93’ and I still have it. Mine is exactly like yours but I souped it up a bit so it has bells and whistles.

reply

That is a great story. Almost 30 years. Has to be one of your prized possessions. I'm truly impressed.

The only thing I have replaced due to wear on mine is the mainspring and I think those wear out around the 6-7k round range. If your not shooting that much you should be good to go. The finish on yours looks really nice. Has it been redone?

reply

It's the original finish. I've never carried it much in a holster so the finish doesn't really have any "holster wear." There is wear to the finish around the grip frame and on the thumb safety from my hands, but it doesn't really show up in that picture. It would show up in a closeup picture. The wear on the front strap's finish is limited to the top of it (and the underside of the trigger guard), because for most of its life it wore the stock rubber wraparound grips that came with it (the rubber wraparound part kept my hands from ever touching most of the front strap). I never liked those, so eventually I replaced them with Herrett's HB-1 fully-checkered walnut grips, which I love. The quality is excellent, and they fit as perfectly as if they had been custom made for my particular gun:

I've replaced the recoil spring several times, after every 1,000 rounds (not that it needs to be replaced that often, but I've always done it just to be on the safe side). I always use a standard Colt-manufactured one.

I haven't fired it much lately, but when I used to handload I fired it a lot. I went through quite a few boxes of 225-grain cast lead roundnose bullets (500 bullets per box). I've tried all kinds of bullet types in it, from 185-grain JHPs, to 200-grain CCI/Speer "Flying Ashtray" JHPs, to 255-grain cast lead SWCs, and no matter what I feed it, it runs like a clock; not a single jam or any other type of malfunction. Not all 1911s are like that (some of them are downright fussy), but this one is, which is why I decided a long time ago that I wasn't ever going to sell it.

reply

I didn't realize the one in the photo was your 1911. I assumed it was just a stock pic of one very similar.
That's a beautiful pistol. It's apparent that you've taken exceptional care of it. Well done, sir.

reply

It’s quite beautiful. Mine looked identical when I bought it in the early 90’s. Now the finish looks like a hammer out of a tool box but it never jams, and like you, will never sell it. 👍

Hey can you get me a plasma rifle, Arnie?

All.

Boom!

You never hand ammo to a sketchy looking giant checking out your guns!
Honestly... minor movie characters are so dumb.

Nice ;)
Very dependable. I found out that the Glock 10mm would feed .40 with just a drop in barrel so I could shoot .40s instead of 90¢ 10s. That gets expensive.

reply

Don’t laugh, but this is mine. It will take down a deer...not that I plan on doing so.

That's actually pretty cool. Your's has the laser sight too? It's funny you mentioned that cuz when the coywolves started getting brave around here we got Mom the base model NAA .22 magnum derringer revolver. Pretty sure it's the original for yours but it's got the folding grip.
Other than that, tho, they got Nothing in common lol!
Honestly, your little gun looks cool as the other side of the pillow!

reply

My favorite gun was my trusty M-16 I carried while I was in the US Army. It was a bit beat up but that rifle never jammed on me and it was quite accurate.

reply

Yep. That's the main reason AR15s are so popular. They work!

reply

Star Trek phasors.

That'd be nice....

Depends what I am doing. For deer hunting my 30-06. For rabbit, grouse and ring-neck hunting my 12 gauge Remington 870 shotgun. For squirrel hunting my 22 rifle. And for killing things in my yard like squirrel, chipmunks, etc. my RWS 177 pellet gun. For snakes my 22 pistol with snake shot.

reply

Kill alotta things in the yard, do ya? 😆
Don't have a pellet gun. I can definitely see the need.
Wish I'd had one in Tallahassee when the bluejays and mocking birds would stage tribal warfare in my backyard.

reply

Seems like you know your stuff. Can you suggest a good place to buy ammo online that doest leave your wallet empty.

reply

I buy my ammo in person. Honestly, I haven't even looked online. The best reputable place, like retail, that I found to buy bulk was Academy Sports. But it's very possible that other comparable vendors are equally competitive.
I have to take about a 3 hour round trip to save on ammo and at that point I'm not really saving anything. I dunno if there are any restrictions on online ammo sales.

reply

That’s basically what 2 other gun enthusiasts have told me. Have to go with majority vote, best to buy ammo in person. I wonder if making your own bullets would be cheaper?

reply

Definitely cheaper. Dangerous if you're not familiar with it. It's easy enough to teach yourself, especially with the resources available, but I recommend some quality instruction from someone you trust.
It'll reduce the cost no less than 50%. At least for common conventional rounds.

reply

Ammoseek and Sportsmans Guide are both reputable and reasonably priced

reply

Thanks bro! That’s exactly what i needed.

Anytime
Happy shooting😉

"Don't have a pellet gun. I can definitely see the need."

I highly recommend you get one. I think the Diana RWS are the best. I have the Diana RWS Model 34, .177 cal. (you can get them in the 22 cal. also) I have had mine for I'm guessing 20 years and it shoots as good and is as powerful as the day I got it. Makes almost no noise so you won't be bothering your neighbors or scaring the other animals away. You can kill anything from chipmunks to possums with it.

There's a fella in town that I see on his driveway often, target shooting with what I thought was a .22 rifle. Even with a suppressor it's illegal inside city limits!
Pellet gun lol!
I assume he's a good shot.
As mild as my 10/22 is, regarding report and recoil, a quality pellet gun has to be incredibly accurate. What's range and arc like?

reply

Its very accurate and a good range. The only thing is each time I use a different type of pellet I need to sight it in. But its fun to sight in so that's no problem for me. I have an excellent scope on it and that helps.

I usually only use RWS pellets. There are many types and all serve a purpose.

reply

I have an RWS as well. Heavy for a pellet gun, but good quality

reply

Just had a look at the 3400 and 3500 models. That has to be the slickest air rifle I've ever seen. The quality is so much more than I expected. I'd be proud to have one.

reply

I guess my childhood Red Ryder BB gun doesn’t count.

reply

I dunno. I'm starting to rethink my original post. There are some seriously cool co2 bb guns today plus badass crossbows.
I had one of those. I was so little. My older brother punched me so I shot him. Seemed reasonable at the time.
We never got anything even resembling a gun after that until we actually started hunting! Lol
