RIP MovieChat

Heavy moderation will kill this site. Well done crybullies. You have concern-trolled Jim into making some of you as moderators and now you are effectively reporting every post and user you personally hate. Soon most of the users will move on to better sites with neutral moderation. \

Goodbye.

reply

Why don't you create an exact copy of this site where you can fuck people over all you want, and see which one thrives?

reply

Why do people of limited imagination automatically leap to the conclusion that the OP's sentiment necessarily indicates he/she is an abusive troll? It might be a person like myself genuinely concerned about issues of free speech and the horror some of us feel upon its infringement---all in the name of protecting the online community from the all-purpose bogeyman trolls. There has been increased censorship of comments deemed even mildly objectionable and indiscriminate banning that some of us are concerned about. It is all the more tragic Moviechat could potentially continue this downward spiral because some of us truly wish this site well and want it to succeed.

reply

When I see people who consistently post about films instead of forum logistics complain how they were unjustly targeted, I will also become concerned. So far most people who I've seen complaining provide very little in the way of constructive forum contributions. There are a few who do both... but most people either write about shows or random topics designed to derail the main function of the website. When I see people who write about films being harassed, I will jump to their defense but so far I simply haven't seen that.

reply

Because no one else cares???

Don't do the crime, if you cannot do the time.

reply

Yes, you already gave your opinions on this matter on the "Rules" thread. You will also find a comment I made in which your handle was specifically called out as being quasi-fascist in orientation.

Bernie Sanders support does not equate with being "socialist." I would encourage immersion in the Trotskyism of the World Socialist Website.

see ya, ben

reply

Only people around here complaining about moderation are people who talk-shit/trolls or people who enjoy trollish behaviour.

Does free speech give someone the right to make a racist comment? no right, there's a line don't cross it.

reply

Not so

reply

Actually yes it does.

If you only allow free speech to those who agree with you, it's not really free speech, now is it?

As I predicted in the 'New Rules" thread, the moderators now feel themselves empowered to go forth and begin issuing their series of "warnings". Tonight I received this message from Moderator 2:

"This is a warning. It seems that a post has caught our attention and may be in violation of the Community Rules posted at https://moviechat.org/rules.
No mature or sexual content"

Aside from not telling me which post concerned him, it comes as zero surprise in light of the recently-published "community rules" which are a blueprint for heavier moderation and the murder of free speech---ostensibly to protect the online community from "trolls". I know I am not the only one who has had problems already with Jim's moderators, for whom I have far more contempt than for any so-called troll. Slowly but surely, they will kill this site for which I had the highest hopes back in February.

Really? You want a site that makes people feel unwelcome to write what's on their minds? We'll see how successful that is.

Bye, bennie. If the mods bother you so much, leave. Easy solution.

reply

He posted the same thing on TMDb, as if he was doing people a favor, and they told him to get lost. Apparently he's a pest there too.

And the rules indicate no socks are allowed, and here we have socks being made to complain about the rules. As Jar Jar was the key to all of this, Wilson/Ben are also part of this ridiculous charade.

reply

Idiots like yourself amuse me---paranoiacs who are constantly looking for what you call "trolls" and liberally bandy that term about with people that disagree with you. You think I'm some "troll" you've met before, though you're absolutely in the wrong. So I get called "Ben" or "Bennie". I don't know who that is, but you people seem to think you know what you're talking about. I am a person who agreeed with the OP over the dark direction this site has been going based on my own recent experiences. I am also profoundly disappointed with this because I viewed MC as having the best potential as an IMDb alternative.

reply

Again, if you're that unhappy with it, leave. Simple solution. See ya.

reply

I'll leave in my own time, thank you.

reply

Than stop griping, thank you. It gets tiresome and is accomplishing exactly zero.

reply

I would suggest stop reading posts in General Discussion with names like "RIP Moviechat" where people are obviously going to air their misgivings about the site's direction.

reply

I think it's evidence of the generally tolerant nature of this site that such a thread hasn't been deleted yet.

reply

Exactly. If so-called legit posters like Meta would stop bitching and post more legit posts, the site would only improve. But his posting just encourages more BS threads.

reply

I don't think discussions on the issue of free speech and heavy moderation are the least bit "BS threads."

reply

When all your doing is griping about this forum, yeah, it's BS. The fact is, the rules are in place. I think they're pretty reasonable. You either abide by them or leave. End of story. You wanna keep bitching, take it to another more appropriate thread like sandbox.

reply

[deleted]

Just because you might not have experienced it yet doesn't necessarily mean it isn't going on. I had been alarmed at the number of recent postings (post-IMDb) that were marked as Deleted and began to see some of my own disappear. The moderators banned me recently for satirical postings they didn't understand and i had to get Jim to intervene directly. Others are beginning to notice these tendencies as well. It is interesting to note that the rise in active moderation/censorship/banning coincided with the appearance of the adverts.

reply

[deleted]

Here you go, Dazed:

https://moviechat.org/tt0368975/Sleepover/58fd6e27fc32da0011eed3d1/Whos-hotter-Jane-Lynch-or-Alexa-Vega

As you can see, a number of them were left intact. He tried to spin it to Jim that the posts were satirical, exactly as he tried to spin the OP of this thread (one of his socks) was being satirical and it's "performance art" [laugh]

Jim's rules are quite reasonable, and are in fact very normal fare for forums.

Even IMDb had rules, actually a lot more of them than MC does. The difference is IMDb's "moderating" was automated, so trolls flourished. Not surprisingly, this is what they were lobbying so hard for here. And when I say they, I mean basically one person.

P.S. Does the posting style in the thread I linked to look familiar? ;)

reply

[deleted]

I'm guessing the idea was to try to create a thread which gave cause for complaint and then complain about being complained about! A self fulfilling piece of trolling if ever there was.
*nods*

Apparently he did it on more than that one thread on that board. I didn't see it or know about it until someone here pointed it out, after the fact.

Interesting about the meaning of Metratron, but not surprising. Yes, God, Jesus, and a slew of other socks were/are Ben's.
Anyway they're doing a lot of whining about moderation and claiming others are too.. however I'm not seeing it are you?

No, I'm not seeing it, because it doesn't exist, LOL! Wait, Klownz said recently he was banned because he'd called Americans fat and … some other pejorative. Not that I'm down with disparaging any group of people, and certainly not any individual poster, but an outright ban for it may have been too harsh for a first-time offense. Of course I didn't see it, and for all I know it wasn't a first-time offense, so I can't say. Anyway, that's the only complaint I've seen by anyone who isn't B-b-b-benny and His Socks. (With apologies to Elton John.)

Again, as I understand it, he was spamming that message board with more than we now see. Similar to how he was abusing the Trending section with his sock Troll, except without the profanity. Relatively harmless, I suppose, and personally I wouldn't have reported the thread had I seen it, but I understand why someone would.

I have no idea if that account really was banned or not. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. It's definitely a bizarre trolling game, but normal people can't comprehend what the pay-off is. All I get is it's about getting attention, and then crying about how he got burned after being told that's what fire does.

Edit: I give up trying to fix the quotes. [giveup]

reply

as I understand it, he was spamming that message board with more than we now see.

A lot more. The thread you linked to had 12 posts. He made close to 100 nonsensical and, in some cases, R-rated, posts on that board, keeping "Sleepover" pinned to the trending section for an extended period of time. If you click on his username, you can still see the posts. They are visible there even though they were deleted from that movie's board.

reply

Close to 100! Holy cr@p, really? I missed all that. No wonder he was reported and banned.

Oh, but that was satirical performance art, right ;)

reply

Cat,

Am I reading the link you posted correctly? Is he having a question and answer session with himself only? The OP is metatron and the replies are from metatron? Geez! All of us talk to ourselves at one time or another. We even go so far as to answer ourselves. But, to actually type a lengthy post with replies is beyond the pale! The narcissistic behavior of this poster definitively comes through. Why do you suppose it hasn't been deleted by Jim or the Mods?

reply

The way he/you/Wilson/Ben are doing it is BS:

Heavy moderation will kill this site. Well done crybullies. You have concern-trolled Jim into making some of you as moderators and now you are effectively reporting every post and user you personally hate. Soon most of the users will move on to better sites with neutral moderation.

That's not how you create a good conversation. Attacking the users, Jim's judgment, and the longevity of the site itself all in a short paragraph - when the new rules have barely been implemented - makes that poster look worse.

And your post on TMDb, where you happily report trolling and trying to get MC shut down, doesn't engender respect. I can tell by their responses that they are tired of your schtick as well.

Jim's original thread allows for discussion. Some other posters had concerns and questions about the rules, and asked their questions in a normal
way. Your continued methods (as well as those other posters) are always antagonistic, cataclysmic and irrationally trolly. Just ask a simple question. If you want to cuss, then ask or reread the rules. Why bring up "fail/demise/world is ending!" drama to every post?

reply

I don't think you got the OP's original intent. I viewed it as a form of satirical performance art drawing attention to a problem that some of us feel is a genuine concern: the rise in moderated censorship on this board.

reply

Think you made a mistake; didn't you mean to say YOUR original intent, bennie?

reply

I know it was meant for a different purpose (ostensibly to prove some guy named Ben is myself), but I would like to thank you for posting those quotes I made as I stand by them 100%. It was interesting reading some of those other responses from people concerned about the same thing.

reply

A different purpose? It, amongst many others, have proven time over time who you are, and that you have no compunction whatsoever about lying about your socks, or anything else. You've been hoisted way too many times now, usually by your own petard.

It was interesting reading some of those other responses from people concerned about the same thing.

Is that right. Let's review that thread for truth, shall we? You know what truth is; it's the opposite of a lie.

The OP, Jesus, a well known and one of Ben's (your) self-admitted sock quotes "you" and "Guitar King," bragging "I caused the future demise of Moviechat" and "My plan is effective."

Disco2, the second poster, makes no complaint about any rules or "heavy" (or "horrific"!) moderating here, only that he believes Jim supposedly copied the rules from Google because there are now ads on the site. Never mind that these are very standard forum rules.

"Jesus" then makes an inane post comparing Jim to Edison, and how poorly Edison treated Tessla.

Disco2 posted again, accusing Jim of being in this as a money-making scheme.

You/Jesus then post, saying how IMDbA needs to promote itself, blah blah, MovieChat has "heavy moderation," hashed/io, blah blah. You're far too narcissistic to realise how transparent you are.

Next post, Disco2 again, merely complains about how he doesn't like hashed/io's interface.

You/Jesus then respond how you like IMDbA's interface.

New to IMDbA poster then says he likes the layout there, but (paraphrasing) is a ghost town.

You/Jesus post again with a bunch of entirely unrelated babble about your having written a "new bible."

Nimda (the site's admin) responds with a Scientology joke, to which you respond.

End of thread.

Ooh, yes, that's certainly an interesting read about people "concerned about the same thing," innit?

reply

As stated before, if you address me as "Ben", your comment will not be read because it is obvious to me, though perhaps not to you, your comment is meant for somebody else with whom you have a grievance. But I've grown a little of your attempts to prove something here and am putting you on ignore, just as I would any troll I came across on IMDb.

reply

You can't handle the truth. That's why you're putting me on ignore, if in fact you did, which I doubt.

Oh but wait, I thought there weren't any trolls, only "so-called" trolls, called such by people who merely disagree with those they call trolls.

FREE SPEECH! MY FREE SPEECH IS BEING TRAMPLED UPON BY METATRON!

reply

What happened? Are not allowed to swear anymore?

reply

That's where things get tricky. I have seen many posts that use four-letter words and sometimes use them myself, but what exactly constitutes "mature and sexual content"? It seems to be based on the arbitrary application of "community rules" that exist within the minds of individual human moderators. I never liked it, but I think I would prefer the automatic *beep* of IMDb that would pop up whenever obscenities were used.

reply

That's a shame. I had hoped this site would have elevated itself above the petty immature *beep* that IMDB used and remained a little more relaxed about swearing. That idea that thse words need to be censored in this day in age is ridiculous.

reply

"That idea that thse words need to be censored in this day in age is ridiculous."

Not so. I hope a profanity filter will be enabled. For those of us who have had it up to here with "f-this" and "f" that would greatly appreciate one. I don't use the d__n word and I'm tired of seeing it and hearing it. There was a time when the f-bomb wasn't uttered...people had respect for others. It's not just a word...it's a disgusting profane word that has no place in civil discourse. The filter could be an option with ON being the default. For those who aren't offended, they could opt for OFF in their Profile. The filter could starting *bleeping* George Carlin's "seven dirty words" and add from ShutterStock if needed. tMDB has this feature.

reply

First things first, Jim is doing a fine job with this website and everything appears to be running smoothly.

Secondly, I haven't had a problem with anyone. Looks like you just started up your account to cause trouble anyway considering the fact that you only have one post.

reply

One post under that particular sock. It's the same troll using several...little bennie cesar. What's priceless is how it has conversations with its other socks.

reply

I suggest you stop your deranged witchhunt for "trolls" and "socks" and start listening to some of the reservations the OP, myself, and others have about the rise of the use of moderators based on experiences we've already had. These are signs this site could potentially destroy itself in the not-too-distant future. Already, IMDB2 has gotten a terrible reputation for heavy moderation and now this site is moving in that same direction. You might have been one of those who naïvely believed Col Needham's lies that "trolls" killed IMDb's boards. That explanation has always ringed hollow for those of us who felt free to write as we pleased on the boards and were never bothered by these "trolls" you're so frightened of. I know your type well: a "troll" to you is someone you fundamentally disagree with. People like you clamor for MORE moderation. This is the kiss of death for a free speech chat forum.

reply

*enormous eyeroll*

Amen.

reply

I do appreciate your one-word responses, MovieManCin2, as they help the thread "RIP Moviechat" to trend at the top of General Discussion and help draw attention to a potential stumbling block for the success of this forum: namely, an unwholesome rise of much more strict moderation in which comments are deleted at the whim of a moderator and there is more active banning. We have all seen your comments encouraging people to write more on individual boards, which at present is a depressing, lonely experience unless ypu're on with a few active members like the Psycho board. Of course more users are necessary. However, if word gets around that Moviechat has heavy moderation, active censorship of posts, and active banning, nobody will want to come here. This thread sheds a spotlight on the very real dangers of vastly increased moderation.

reply

Once again, you don't like the moderation, leave. What about that don't you understand? Not your site, not your rules. Not gonna change because of your griping. End of story, finished, done. And we all know you and the OP are the same poster, bennie.

reply

A word of advice, paranoiac: read a good book now and then. It would improve your writing style. You wouldn't have to rely so much on empty cliches like "end of story" (which you regrettably use more than once on this thread). Thank you, though, for keeping "RIP Moviechat" trending so other users can decide for themselves whether or not they think the ideas presented here are relevant and important.

reply

A word of advice to you, bennie. 1) Learn what "paranoid" actually means; you totally misused the word. Also might want to check the actual meaning of "satire." Suggest you bone up on basic English. Second, I guarantee you I read more books than you likely look at in any given month. Third, someone like you isn't worth an iota of creativity; cliches are good enough for trolls like you, who have done nothing but gripe about being moderated and have contributed pretty much zero of any relevance or importance. Also interesting how you sidestep that fact constantly.

reply

"I know your type well: a "troll" to you is someone you fundamentally disagree with."

Actually, all that statement does is prove how little you actually do know, bennie.

reply

I know you might not get this, but every time you accuse me of being this "bennie" you seem to have an obsession with, you are making a magnificent fool out of yourself.

reply

I know you think you're being clever, but every time you gripe about moderation on the board, you are cementing the fact that you passed fool long ago and are heading rapidly toward idiot...with nothing magnificent about it.

reply

I guess I hit a nerve. I'm sorry--did I hurt your feelings?

reply

Not at all. But you're obviously still trying to sidestep.

reply

Not doing any sidestepping here. My position is crystal.clear from the first thread I wrote above. I gave you the sound advice earlier to stay off threads with names like "RIP Moviechat" because you can rest assured they will contain viewpoints that question the current direction of the site. Though you might not believe it, the issues about Moviechat and the dangers of increased moderation are being discussed elsewhere as a cursory examination of Filmboards.com will reveal. People love the layout of the site but are concerned about heavier moderation. I'm sorry you don't find the subject an agreeable one, but perhaps if you see some of your posts get deleted for unknown reasons, you might be more inclined to see our viewpoint. I left Huffington Post altogether when I observed they were actively deleting comments which ran contrary to their politics. People will not want to come to a site which is known for heavy censorship and word gets around on other boards fast. IMDB2 has already destroyed itself in this manner. Your persistent and unimaginative repetition "just leave" is noted and I will reiterate my own statement that I will leave in my own time. Troll-paranoiacs (not quibbling with you on the word) like yourself use all manner of tricks to make people feel unwelcome if a point of view is expressed with which you disagree. You have resorted to calling me a troll and have accused me of being a sock puppet account of another user--a flagrant lie. Is it so hard to believe there might be others who harbor these same ideas based on our own recent experiences? It isn't all some vast conspiracy dreamed up in the head of "bennie" you can't get out of your head. In the final analysis, I view people like yourself as the true trolls and the only type I ever come across, demanding greater moderation, resorting to malicious insults because your arguments don't hold water. In my estimation, people like you are the true enemies of free speech.

reply

Nobody's disagreeing with your view, bennie. People are simply saying you're being a pest with your constant griping, which is fact, not opinion. And I made no arguments; I only called out your vitriolic spewing. I really don't care if one of my posts gets deleted for something the mods deem inappropriate. Not that big a deal; it's an internet forum about film, not a life-altering situation. Obviously it's far more important to you, likely because you've been banned elsewhere. But of course you'll deny that. If I cared about IMDB2 that much, I'd be on it. But I don't. I prefer MC. You, obviously, have some personal interest in what it does. Why? Are you an investor in the site? Is your life that empty you need a movie internet site to feel fulfilled? And it's funny how "all" those others who supposedly feel the same way always sound remarkably like yourself. Also funny how all of you try (operative word is try, but never succeeding) to flip other's posts to make it sound as if you're the one being persecuted.

In the final analysis, once again, if you don't like what you think is happening here, leave. Again, what about that simple choice can't you comprehend? You've yet to answer. If you and "all" those others want to do nothing but bitch and gripe, create your own forum.

In my estimation, people like you who do nothing but complain are what's wrong with these sites.

reply

Wow. You wrote all that and it must have taken awhile. But when I was addressed as somebody else's name, I knew everything that followed would be bullshit. But now I must bid you farewell. You can now keep Catbooks Company on my ignore list.

reply

Long time? Hardly. 5 minutes. The difference is, unlike you, I actually have a life outside of an internet film board and don't sit there waiting for a response. Ignore? Good. Trust me, bennie; nobody's gonna miss you here. NOBODY.

reply

Please. Give it up, Ben. You've been busted more times than I can count.

You've admitted you're a troll, that you like and admire trolls, that you have many sock accounts (including many you've used here -- you've ADMITTED to them), not only here but on every other alternative IMDb site I know of, and have been caught in countless lies.

The only reason you want this site to "succeed" is because you hoped it'd continue to have no rules, and no moderation, so you could carry on with your abusive, sociopathic, and destructive ways, for "lulz." So you'd have a larger audience.

Go to 4chan, where this behavior is not only tolerated, but admired and lauded, just as you do. Or troll YouTube comments.

The rules are here to stay. Don't like 'em? Leave, as you've threatened to do numerous times.

The irony is originally Jim's only rule was to use common sense when posting (which all reasonable adults understood perfectly well, and had no problem with). But no, YOU had to continue to push and push, so now we have concrete written rules, and now you're crying about the very thing you created [laugh]

reply

Sorry, woman. You're talking crazy. I stopped reading when I saw I was being addressed as "Ben". If I want to start a thread, I'll do it on my own handle. K thanx

reply

Oh sure you stopped reading [laugh]

Woman? Am I supposed to be offended by that? I'm more of a man than you'll ever be, and you just proved it by saying you couldn't even handle reading the rest of my post ;)

You're busted, you remain busted. You're exactly like the Little Boy Who Called Wolf, except presumably you're an adult.

reply

Only an adult chronologically, apparently.
