How is a 50 year old creature that infantile in behavior?

I understand baby Yoda is cute. I understand that with a lifespan of 900+ years, a 50 year old of this species can still be infantile in physical development. But that creature still has 50 years of life experience.

Did it just sit in a stroller all day and nap for 50 years? WTF has it been doing all this time? Why hasn't it developed language and communication skills in 50 fricking years?

I have not. Is that a user on here? What is the significance?

Is 2988 his weight?

I've developed a theory that the first 50 years of a yoda species life is something completely different, like a huge tadpole or a caterpillar type thing. And that it's only just recently evolved into his humanoid form.

That would be a reasonable explanation. Hopefully there is such a background and it's not just played this way for winning cheap affections from the audience.

The development and maturation process for that species is unknown. All we known is that Yoda was over 900 years old when he died and spent 800 years as a Jedi. And considering that Yoda spent the last 25 years of his life living in solitude on a swamp planet, and how quickly his health deteriorated between TESB and ROTJ, its possible he could have lived well past a 1000.

As far as Baby Yoda is concerned, we know nothing about his life to this point. He very well might have spent decades locked in the building, being hidden from the world. Its possible he had barely ever went outside, let alone traveled thru space. And he had hardly any contact with other beings, and none that should him any affection. Notice throughout the show, the number of sounds he makes has increased and how much more he is learning about his abilities.

You're on the internet, aren't you? Look around.

Thank you for this most helpful reply. It adds a great deal of value to the discussion.

Any time ;)!

You do realize that a.) he's an alien, and b.) his species apparently ages very slowly. Think about how long it takes for humans to age from baby to adult, and then compare to his species. Yoda himself did say that he was 900 years old at the time he died, so it's possible that it took nearly a century or more for him to mature into an adult. There's so much we don't know about Yoda's species, things we're still learning to this day.

Say humans live to 80. Mature at 20. 4:1 ratio. Take that same ratio as baby yoda is 50, matures at 200. Live to about 800. Makes sense I guess.

reply

Humans speak in sentences at 3 years. Yodies should speak by 30 then.

a.) Yes, I realize he's an alien in a fictional universe.
b.) Yes, I realize his species ages very slowly.

You do realize that a.) I acknowledged as much in my post, and b.) your reply did nothing to address or answer the question I actually asked.

I asked the same question. It doesn't make sense but most of the fans aren't bothered by it.

I haven't seen this series yet, but on this question:

A human being at one has barely started to speak and walk. A dog, on the other hand, is mature. Is it valid for the dog to wonder why the human is taking care of itself? After all, its had a full year of experience. That should be plenty. It is for the dog.

If his species brain doesn't develop for over 50 years, then regardless of his experience he won't be able to talk. It all depends on what is normal for his species.

reply

I really don't know why dogs haven't just eaten all the babies and been done with the human race.

reply

You base your thread on what you know of human life on the planet earth. There's no telling how different would be out there in the vastness of space.

The way humans mature intellectually is not a function of the passage of time or accumulation of memories. It's mostly brain development that's responsible for when you achieve various cognitive milestones. So if that process is also slowed down by a proportional amount, the age of 100 being roughly equivalent to the human age of 10 or 11, then a 50 year old of Yoda's species would be roughly the same as a kindergarten age human child.

Of course five year olds generally talk whereas baby Yoda only seems to babble a little. Perhaps this is because no one has taught him to speak. Or maybe the languages of a universally Force capable race are telepathic, and they only learn to speak verbally to facilitate interacting with aliens. If the skill is harder for them to learn then it requires an amount of practice Mando's charge has never had. Or of course, maybe he can understand spoken language and respond but chooses not to. We'll find out as the series goes on.
