MCU has zero excuse not to make r rated movies

Joker proved a comic book movie can be good and make money

reply

Loads of comic book movies have been good and made money.

R-Rated, Deadpool and Logan made money and are great.

Joker is fantastic, though.

reply

Sure but if those couldn't convince people Joker should

reply

Joker is excellent. I did like Logan better, though. I think the story was better - this quasi-family struggling to find love in a broken world. I think it was spun out a little better.

What Joker has, though, is some interesting commentary on the sinister, forgotten elements of society and one impeccable performance.

reply

Logan is masterpiece level, nearly perfect. Joker is good but it has some flaws, and is only really great in its third act.

reply

I'd mostly agree with that. Logan, I think, is the best comic book movie of all time. It's just a cut above.

reply

It was never an excuse it was a decision.

reply

There is no reason for it now

Joker proved a comic book movie can be good and make money

^^^

as others Pointed out, Both Logan and Deadpool already proves that...

In fact, If anything I'd say Joker proves more the important of a character driven movie than "Rated R"

I dont think Marvel would look at Joker and think "Oh Man we need to make an R Rated Movie"...If Marvel took anything away from Joker it would be the importance of Story telling, and possibly The Idea of Making A Film that is a complete stand alone film...

Right now, All MCU films are part of a cinematic Universe and Marvel Studios Will not change that going future, They are having Historic and unprecedented success...But Joker Proves, If Marvel Studios had an Idea for a CBM that didnt take place in their MCU, and The Movie,Script and Idea was good enough, BOTH Joker and Logan prove you can make a film that has nothing to do with an timeline or Cinematic universe and Your core fanbase will still show up..

reply

All MCU films are part of a cinematic Universe

MCU = Marvel Cinematic Universe

So of course all MCU films are part of a cinematic universe.

reply

They should look at the r ratimg. This is Joker first outing that may be one off. Logan was a conclusion.

reply

Logan and Deadpool are not the same R that Joker is. Joker is dark and disturbing in way those other two don't approach.

And yes, it doesn't push Marvel to make the same as Joker.

But it does indicate that everyone should be less afraid of deviating from the 4-quadrant approach. Deadpool and Logan took one step but Joker took another step beyond that. Both risks paid off with a much lower initial outlay. Everyone will now be more and more inclined to take a chance -- and that's a good thing.

reply

Their excuse is, "why change what's working", and it's very valid. Everything Marvel does is huge, why mess with that formula until they need to?

reply

In other words they play it safe? Cowards

reply

It's show "business".

reply

Marvel had three Blade movies, two Deadpool movies, three Punisher movies, and one Wolverine movie that were R-rated. If we're technical, they also had an R-rated Man Thing but that was straight to video and most people forgot it existed. That's before they had the Netflix shows, which were R-rated (and at least initially part of the MCU). They are not afraid of making R-rated material. They just haven't found the right fit for the MCU.

reply

Thats their fault they have had 10 years to figure it out. Plus if A movie Blade is on the horizon that's their chance and there are zero excuses now

reply

What do you mean “their fault”? It’s as if MCU is failing. If they decide to wait to make an R-rated movie, then obviously they know what they’re doing.

reply

They are failing quality wise. There is gonna be a time were they have to answer if they are gonna make r rated movies or not. No more prolonging

reply

Failing quality wise? They are bigger now than they ever have been. And what characters did they even have that were suitable for an R-eating? Captain America? Spider-Man? They have had Daredevil and Punisher for a while but they worked really well as Netflix shows so again, they are making good decisions.

reply

All the movies are bad except Winter soldier. Punisher and Daredevil are no more and when they come to the movies i doubt they ll be r rated

reply

You think all the movies are bad. Most people disagree with you.

That said, what would making them R-rated accomplish? Do we need to see Iron Man rip people’s heads off? Does Nick Fury need to say mother fucker? Maybe some boobs here or there?

reply

Most people have low standards.

I m not saying every movie has to be r rated but if the character has mature books then thats what the movie should reflect that's what an r rating would acomplish.
Nick Fury has mature stories by Garth Ennis like Peacemaker

reply

Cap doesn't have a mature book. Spidey had one but it was a story that took place in the future where he's an old man. 99% of Marvel characters don't have mature books.

reply

99? Incorrect i already said not everybody does but that's false to say.
Deadpool
Blade
Nick Fury
Punisher
Blade
Elektra
Black Widow
Moon Knight
Daredevil
The Max Universe
Luke Cage
Carnage
Bullseye
Kingpin

Regardless of the smaller numbers there are lots of mature books

Also i said Nick Fury in my reply not capt or spiderman

reply

You listed 13 characters out of several thousand. Some of those characters were in the Max Universe which you also listed for some reason.

reply

Like you said yourself there are thousands i can't list them all. I know about Max i thought i d list it anyway

reply

Really? There are thousands of different mature audience books? There's a mature audience Thor book? A mature audience Squirrel Girl book? What about Power Pack? There aren't any of those because Marvel has been mostly pumping out comics that are aimed at children or teens since World War II. Sure, every now and then they'll have a series about whomever and it will be under Max but for the most part, they deal in PG-13 material. Stop pretending otherwise.

reply

I m not pretending anything you are the one thinks mature books don't seem to exist and grasp for straws why an r rated propriety can't be r rated or a movie period

reply

I've done none of the things you just said.

reply

The hell u haven't

The MCU are followers, not leaders. They were leaders before Disney bought them out. They pioneered, or at least perfected, the shared-universe concept

But after being bought they've often allowed the other studios to take bolder risks. WB announced Wonder Woman and Cyborg movies before Disney had the balls to announce Captain Marvel and Black Panther. Fox did R-rated movies. WB is again leading with "arthouse" superhero movies. Sony made an incredible animated superhero movie with Into the Spider verse which was way more visually interesting and funnier than any MCU movie so far

I like the MCU ok, but I've come to hate their hardcore fanbase which generally discredits any good ideas from other studios and does not admit that the MCU could do many more interesting things

You actually have Disney to think for that. Feige used to work under Ike Pearlmutter who was infamously opposed to main characters who were female or black. Feige wanted to make these movies a long time ago but he kept being told no. Once Disney bought Marvel, they removed Ike from making any decisions for the movies.

As for taking risks, the last Avengers movies killed off or retired several of its main heroes, bumped the timeline up five years, and changed the status quo for good. That's a big gamble.

reply

You should add the destruction and dismantling of SHIELD which reset not the just movies but TV.

reply

True. And the follow up to that movie broke up the Avengers.

reply

It's not a big gamble. Actors are not comic book characters. They age. They get tired of playing certain roles. They start to demand more and more money

Retiring oldass Downey Jr. and burnt-out-on-acting Chris Evans was a logical choice. So is changing the status quo, considering that we've been getting about a decade of macguffin-chasing movies so far. It was time for something new

reply

So what would be a gamble in your opinion?

reply

Just because it's been proven doesn't mean it will be always the case

reply

It can work

reply

OK...THE R IS IRRELEVANT TO YOUR STATEMENT THOUGH.AND THE MCU HAVING NO REASON TO NOT MAKE R RATED MOVIES DOESNT MEAN THEY HAVE TO MAKE R RATED MOVIES TO BE GOOD.

reply

They want to pg13 everything so its very much relevant

reply

SO I CAN TAKE MY 11 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND WE EQUALLY ENJOY THE FUN...NOT EVERYONE WANTS EVERY SUPER FLICK TO BE BLOODY,GLOOMY AND ADULT RATED.

reply

Stop using the kids as a straw not every movie has to be for them. Todd Phillips himself had to fight that argument to get his r rating. You want her to see a punisher movie too?

reply

SERIOUSLY DUDE..I ENJOYED THESE CHARACTERS AND ADVENTURES WHEN I WAS MY DAUGHTERS AGE...YOU MIGHT HAVE GROWN INTO A JADED ADULT WHO NEEDS EVERYTHING ADULT THEMED TO BE DEEMED QUALITY.THATS NOT EVERYONE. NOT EVERY MOVIE HAS TO BE R..THE MARVEL FILMS ARE GREAT BECAUSE THEYRE ALL ACCESS.

reply

95 percent of them suck because they are dumbed down. They are always gonna be last

reply

WE HAVE ENJOYED THEM ALL.THEY ARENT DUMBED DOWN.THEY JUST ARENT GRAPHIC NOVELED UP.AS FAR AS ALWAYS BEING LAST.WHAT DOES THAT MEAN.THEYRE MOVIES.THEYRE SUBJECTIVE AND THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO PUT THEM FIRST.THEY MAKE BIG MONEY AND THEY SATISFY THEIR AUDIENCE;WHCH YOU OBVIOUSLY ARE NOT A PART OF.

reply

They are dumbed down the characters act like failed comedians. Compare Joker to mcu movies thats an example of a movie thats not dumbed down

reply

WOW...HAVE YOU EVER ACTUALLY READ ANY OF THE RELEVANT COMICS TO THIS DISCUSSION.THEYRE SUPER POWERED ADULTS IN RAINBOW TIGHTS THROWING QUIPS AND FIGHTING MONSTERS AND VILLAINS.THE MARVEL FILMS ARE A PROPER TRANSLATION OF THE SOURSE MATERIAL...THE JOKER IS MORE OF A GRAPHIC NOVEL TURNED INTO A FILM..VERY DIFFERENT BEASTS.AGAIN I STRESS THAT THE MCU IS GEARED TO MULTI AGE AUDIENCES AND FAMILIES.WHILE THE JOKER WAS GOOD ITS STRICTLY AN ADULT COMIC FLICK..IS THE POINT YOURE HAMMERING AWAY AT ,THAT ALL COMIC BOOKS MOVIES SHOULD BE R RATED ADULT AFFAIRS?I DONT GET WHY YOU INSIST ON STACKING EVERYTHING IN ONE PILE DESPITE THE DISTINCT DIFFERENCES.

reply

Those books are still serious stop spreading false info
